A CAST/CREW MEMBER WISHES IT COULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER FILM
rfwatkins9 November 1999
As a Producer, Actor and Author of the short story "God Talk" was based on, I was disappointed with the final project. I believe that every film maker wants to make the perfect film. I don't think anyone goes into a project thinking they will just do the bare minimum and squeak out a final project. However, the perfect film to most film makers is not the film itself. It is the idea, or vision of how the film should be. This is where "God Talk" suffers.

It would be easier to make the "perfect film" with unlimited financing and unlimited time. "God Talk" had neither. It was shot at a very frantic pace and had budget limitations through out the shoot. Even with these strikes against the project, the original "concept of the perfect film" was never compromised. The shooting went on, page for page, scene for scene, line for line. Even though the cast and crew were rushed or limited to what they could or couldn't do because of lack of time or money.

I can understand a film maker not compromising his/her vision. But when that vision can not be ultimately fulfilled do to restraints such as the ones "God Talk" was faced with, the film maker must sacrifice that vision for the sake of film. I see no reason to make a bad film, and justify it by saying that there was no time or money to do it right. If there isn't enough time or money to do it right, then do it as good as possible with regards to the limitations faced with.

This is where "God Talk" fails. It tried too hard to be the "concept of a good film" where it just should have been a "good film." Unfortunately it was neither.
