Elusive love , marital discord, deceit by the dear ones , and a writer is born!
Queen_of_pentacles14 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Smita Patil , a dusky beauty with talents which could match only Shabana's , has pulled up this otherwise clichéd movie , with Rajesh Khanna's equally sensitive , underplayed , and adorable performance . Rakesh Roshan and Tina Munim fit the bill of adulterous partners , who deprive Nisha , a loving housewife , simple but with character , grace and a strong will power . Unable to bear the presence of her very own sister not only flirting with her husband , as well as father of her new-born baby , Nisha decides to leave the house ,in search of her own identity . The director should be appreciated for depicting the grooming of Nisha into Ashashri , with her hidden talents of anchoring , singing and writing flowering ,and establishing her as a successful writer ; She also becomes materially prosperous , while the wheel of destiny scoffs upon her erring husband , and brings him even lower than her status. Rajesh Khanna , acting as Alok , an admirer of Nisha , builds faith in her , loves her silently , and expresses it discreetly, only to be denied the acceptance by Nisha . This part of the script is not very easy to accept, as Nisha also likes him a lot , for his wit , his simple charms , and affectionate nature , as well as love for her daughter . Since Nisha thinks it might be too late to give it another try , she does not reciprocate , but is shown in two minds , when Alok walks away from her life , broken-hearted . Little baby Guddu is charming. Tina looks attractive enough to make a married man go astray ! Musical score is satisfactory , specially the lyrics are simple yet meaningful.

In Smita Patil's untimely death , Indian Film Industry lost a very unique actor , who gave us a number of path-breaking movies , which are practically the mile-stones , and raising pertinent social issues , like her Marathi movie Umbaratha , meaning threshold for instance . In her real life too, Smita fell in love with a married actor , who was no match to her fame and name , but she basked in the glory of her true love , and wore a Mangalsutra , for a Muslim husband ! Strange ! However , one must admit that Rajesh has stood up with her , and his expressive eyes speak volumes , and he has been also able to enact some scenes capably ,like slapping an audacious journalist etc. The message is loud and clear . Never say die , and do your thing , ladies , stand up on your own , and keep your dignity . It is remarkable that the story writer was not tempted to show the heroine opting for the oldest profession in the world , selling her body for a living , as the trend was eventually shifted to , in many such movies which came later , to show the helpless women becoming glamor dolls !

Aakhir Kyun?
silvan-desouza26 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
On 13 December 1986, we lost a great actress Smita Patil who died due to pregnancy complications. Smita Patil was an actress to reckon with Aakhir Kyun? also stars Rajesh Khanna, Rakesh Roshan and Tina Munim It's a story of women empowerment which was rare in 80s when maardaad was the call of the day. The film is a tearjerker but it's well handled by the director It does suffer from 80s syndrome, melodrama and slow pace at times but that can be avoided. Direction by J.Om Prakash is good Music is superb, Dushman na Kare became famous sung by Lata and Amit Kumar rest songs are all good

Smita Patil steals the show as always, she was one actress who really could play any character. Rajesh Khanna comes in second half and does a good job, thankfully not his usual kinda hamming role. Raakesh Roshan is superb in his evil character, Tina Munim is her usual stern self

Aaurat Komal Hai magar Kamzor Nahi
IPyaarCinema23 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One of the women oriented subject presented by the director. Overall performance of the lead and supporting actors and actresses are great. Smita Patil plays the role of Nisha beautifully, making you feel each and every bit of her pain whilst also portraying her conflicts for most of the part without spoon-feeding you with her words. A watchable movie with a family. It shows a women can do anything in life or achieve anything if she is given the chance to prove her abilities as the poem suggests Komal hai magar kamzor nahin.

Simple, yet Involving
OldisgolD4 February 2006
J Om Parkash, the director of this movie also has another favourite of mine "Apnapan" to his credit. Both the films do not involve any novel theme or even treatment. It is just his knack of getting the basic things right and treating the plot in a homely manner that makes these movies precious to me.

"Akhir Kyoon" boasts the presence of Sumita Patil, undoubtedly a performer par excellence in Indian cinema. She is in her mettle in this simple tale of a woman's woes. The plot and treatment do go somewhat stereotypical in the portion as to what happens to her after being driven out of home by her adulterous husband, and her resolve to face the world in the song "Shakti ka naam naari hae" yet otherwise the treatment is natural, simple, and truthful.

All in all a movie worth spending 3 hours with.

Novel film successfully exposes double standards
AishFan21 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Aakhir Kyon? is a beautiful film that details the stigma of a divorcée for an Indian woman, her struggles and humiliations, and the strength and courage required to fight and conquer. Made in the 1980s, it did a great job of staging the question, Until when must women continue to be used, abused, victimized, oppressed, and denied the right to their own unique personality? An inspirational film, the movie shows how Smita Patil's character, simply on the basis of her own merits and fortitude, is able to start life again from scratch, begin a career, achieve success and respect, and above all, create her own identity all through her diligence and hard work. Songs have wonderful lyrics. Smita Patil is amazing as is Tina Munim. Rajesh Khanna is also great.

Rajesh Khanna steals the thunder
alokc29 April 2007
This was a female oriented movie with Smita Patil as the central character and Rakesh Roshan and Tina Munim having negative shades in their character who torture Smita Patil. Around the mid movie Super Star Rajesh Khanna appears in the movie and steals the thunder from all the co- actors and it appears that he has the lead role. The movie revolves around Smita and she has given a stellar performance but the crowd and the claps of the crowd goes to Rajesh Khanna in a role of a simpleton supporter of women rights. It is a tear jerker, social drama with a message with very good performance by Smita Patil, good music by Rajesh Roshan but the actual winner is Rajesh Khanna - that is why he is the Super Star - the original, the first and the best

Complelling family fare
sanjayppc20 May 2014
Aakhir Kyon is a neat family film by director Om Prakash. The Rajesh Khanna-Om Prakash combo has always given good films & this is no exception. It has got the versatile Smita Patil in the title role with tina munium & rakesh roshan.

The story is one of women upliftment which was a rarity in those days. Smita patil has given a superlative performance. She is the live wire of the film. She is ably supported by rakesh & tina.

The real surprise here is Kaka. This man sure has guts. Time & again he has done heroine centric films & yet held his own. Here, he makes his appearance only after the interval (which is unusual). He puts in a breezy performance. Till the interval, it is a smita patil show but after that, she has to share the honors with the superstar.

The rajesh smita combo has always done in films like Anokha Rishta & Nazrana & here it is no different.

Rajesh khanna had always a great script sense & this film is proof for that.

The director Om prakash makes the film entertaining yet at the same time, it gives a powerful message.

This is a neat family entertainer with no double meaning dialogues, raunchy songs or violence.

Definitely one of the best films of the superstar, though he does not have to exert much in terms of acting.

A superb melodrama
SumanShakya21 April 2020
Plot: Following her husband's illicit relationship with her cousin, a woman leaves her house to become a successful writer.

Critical Assessment: "A deftly nuanced drama full of emotions and beautifully narrated sequences, which remains impulsively watchable for a standout performance of Smita Patil."
