Trout Fishing in America

The fourth episode of Hal Roach's Spat Family series finds Frank Butler, Laura Roessing and her brother, Sidney D'Albrook, out camping. After they destroy their cabin and burn up their clothes, they decide they have no way to get back to civilization, so they decide to ride the rods.

Hal Roach' studio is fondly remembered as the birthplace of Harold Lloyd's career, where Laurel met Hardy and where Our Gang got into trouble, as well as where many other fine comic actors such as Charley Chase, Snub Pollard and Thelma Todd did great work. Along the way he had a few clinkers, and the Spat Family was one of them. The idea of a family that got into comic misadventures wasn't a bad one, but none of the performers were up to carrying the series and the writing was not, alas, good enough to sustain it. After a couple of years, Roach abandoned it and moved his efforts to more promising ideas.
