Don Rickles: Rickles on the Loose (1986)

*** (out of 4)

Don Rickles was certainly in a league of his own and this 1986 special originally aired on Showtime. This hour special was part concert film as well as some staged acts in between. Basically we see Rickles on the stage in Las Vegas and then we get more scripted pieces where he goes out into the real world and gets involved with a wide range of groups.

One such group was the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and we also see him working with a biker gang, going to the DMV as well as another segment involving Merv Griffin and Dick Martin. Other surprise guests also appear including Jerry Lewis and Frank Sinatra, Jr..

RICKLES ON THE LOOSE isn't the greatest thing the comedian ever did but it's certainly entertaining enough to where fans of his will want to watch it. I personally thought the best material was his stage show. The other stuff was good enough but it was a tad bit forced. I wouldn't call the stuff scripted as Rickles is still firing off his brand of humor but at the same time some of it isn't all that great including the Martin bit.
