I feel sure Rainer Werner Fassbinder would have been well satisfied with this new version in Spanish of his classic play, also turned into a film. Despite certain modernisations - Petra von Kant now uses computers and mobile cellular phones, for example - in no way is there any detraction from the basic idea by Fassbinder. Rosa Maria Sarda portrays with fiel ardor Fassbinder's Petra von Kant, who, on reaching success, falls spellbound by the beauty of Karin (Ana Álvarez) to such a degree that her whole world begins to crumble. Ana Álvarez is not bad, she is so beautifully sexually attractive she does not need to try very hard at acting; the other actresses play their parts very well, even down to Silvia Abascal, as Gabriele, Petra von Kant's daughter. The stone-faced passive performance of Gloria Muñoz as the ever-silent Marlene is just perfect. The whole piece in this RTVE version for television is well directed at the right pace by Manuel Armán, who must have been charmed in the middle of so many female actresses, perhaps I mean inspired........ If you know some Spanish this is a good chance for you to practice it; the play is well worth the effort.
