"Many kayakers have begun without finishing." Zeitgeist Films has released the official US trailer for an Icelandic documentary film titled Against the Current, from filmmaker Óskar Páll Sveinsson. The film tells takes us on the remarkable journey of Icelandic transgender Veiga Grétarsdóttir. An expedition beyond transformation. This initially premiered at the Reyjkavik Film Festival last fall, and is arriving in theaters in the US at the end of this month. Veiga embarks on a perilous 1,300-mile journey to circumnavigate Iceland counterclockwise against the current, an achievement that has been compared to climbing (the unclimbable mountain) K2. But it is not just a doc film about this exceptional physical feat - it's also the story of going "against the current" as a transgender woman. Veiga only began to undergo gender reassignment surgery at age 38, after being married with children. This looks like an empowering and inspiring story of overcoming great challenges,...

Amadeus Serafini on his suspicious, new-in-town character, Kieran Wilcox:
"He's the brooding type. He is the new kid in town. He just lost his folks a few weeks back and that's the introduction to Lakewood, and he very much makes a move on Willa [Fitzgerald's] character Emma, and has a clash where it becomes a love triangle between Connor [Weil's] character, Will, Emma, and himself. That's pretty much all I can reveal for the time being and you're going to see how it unfolds over the course of this series."
Serafini on whether or not his parents' deaths were truly an accident:

“Do you like scary movies?” If this line from Wes Craven’s Scream still sends a shiver down your spine, then perhaps you should prepare to be creeped out by more cryptic phone calls, as MTV has officially put in a series order for their Scream reboot.
MTV made the announcement via Twitter, using blood-splattered emojis to get the message across, in addition to a listed phone number. If you call the number, a man imitating Roger L. Jackson’s chilling vocal cords says, “Do you like scary TV? Scream is coming to MTV October 2015.”
The first season of the show will consist of 10 episodes and it is believed that the franchise’s iconic Ghostface outfit will not be worn by any killers early on, based on this statement made by R.J. Torbert of Fun World (the official rights-holder and manufacturer of the Ghostface costume) in an interview with Ghostface.

Just two weeks ago, MTV announced that it had set director Jamie Travis (Faking It) to helm the pilot episode of a series based on the popular meta-horror Scream franchise. At the same time, the network revealed a cast of young up-and-comers, including Willa Fitzgerald (Alpha House, Royal Pains), Amy Forsyth (Reign), John Karna (The Neighbors), Carlson Young (Key and Peele) and Amadeus Serafini. Now, some more casting news, including a major recasting, has been announced.
Bex Taylor-Klaus, who became a fan favorite on The CW’s Arrow with his portrayal of DC Comics character Sin, will be replacing Forsyth in the role of Audrey, the daughter of a Lutheran pastor, who is described as “an artsy loner who aspires to be a filmmaker.” Audrey used to be close friends with protagonist Emma Duvall (Fitzgerald), “a classic beauty whose looks and popularity hide a natural shyness and intellectual nature.” Emma,...

Some quick casting news is here for the upcoming MTV series based on the Scream franchise as THR is reporting that four more actors have signed on for active duty, one of whom will be replacing the previously announced Amy Forsyth.
Willa Fitzgerald will star as Emma Duvall, a classic beauty whose looks and popularity hide a natural shyness and intellectual nature. Her new life with the “in crowd” leaves her estranged from her childhood best friend, Audrey.
Emma is the lead in MTV’s "Scream" take and bears a resemblance to Neve Campbell’s tortured high school student Sidney Prescott in the 1996 feature film.
Bex Taylor-Klaus, who has been recurring on The CW’s "Arrow" as DC Comics character Sin and whose credits also include "The Killing" and "House of Lies," will replace Forsyth in role of Audrey, the daughter of a Lutheran pastor. She’s described as an...

Appropriately enough for this time of year, Acorn Media’s latest batch of DVD releases includes The Fall. It’s a Belfast based psychological crime drama in which Dsi Stella Gibson attempts to hunt down a sadistic serial killer who seems to delight in deviousness. Somewhat unusually for a crime drama, the killer is identified fairly early on as Paul Spector. Thereafter, Spector and Gibson become embroiled in a game of cat and mouse that lasts through five suspensful episodes. The relationship between Spector and Gibson is similar to the one involving Hannibal Lector and Clarice except for the fact that Lector was banged up while Spector is on the loose.

It was only after half of Lurhmann’s Gatsby that I finally understood just how hard it is to make a film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. Fitzgerald had such a disdain for his time that there isn’t a single character in The Great Gatsby that you are supposed to like. However, as author John Green said about the novel, “I don’t know how you got the idea that the quality of a novel should be judged by the likeability of its characters, but let me submit to you that Daisy Buchannan doesn’t have to be likeable to be interesting.” And that quote puts both of the most recent adaptations of the novel into good context. The narrative of this film, what happens and who is being affected and what happens to them in the end is not the point of Gatsby. These films are both art films,...

Years in the making, Walter Salles's movie adaptation of Kerouac's beat classic is bold, affecting and inherently sad
The first two books I bought when I arrived in New York as a graduate student in August 1957 were William H Whyte's The Organization Man and a special edition of the avant-garde quarterly Evergreen Review on the "San Francisco scene". They complemented each other. Whyte's book is a devastating assault on American conformity by a senior editor of the business magazine Fortune. The Evergreen special was a celebration of the countercultural artists soon to be famous as leaders of the beat generation, and the writers featured as members of the San Francisco scene were Allen Ginsberg, whose poem "Howl" was published earlier that year, and Jack Kerouac, whose On the Road was to be the literary sensation of 1957 when it appeared a month or so later.

Tyrannosaur (18)
(Paddy Considine, 2010, UK) Peter Mullan, Olivia Colman, Eddie Marsan. 92 mins
Bad things happen to damaged people (and dogs) in this sparse kitchen-sink drama – almost too many bad things for one film to take, between Mullan's volatile drinker, Colman's abused wife and their vicious social circles. There's a redeeming spiritual dimension to the misery, thank God, and as you'd expect of an actor-turned-director, Considine gets incredible performances from his leads.

Not finding modern-day Paris to his romantic liking, Allen sends Wilson's tourist back to the fantasy 1920s version, and recruits familiar faces to play familiar cultural legends: (Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, etc). It's so unapologetically wistful, he gets away with it. The French will love it.
Johnny English Reborn (PG)
(Oliver Parker, 2011, Us/Fra/UK) Rowan Atkinson, Rosamund Pike, Gillian Anderson. 101 mins

We have less than three weeks until the D23 Expo convention is held in Anaheim, and more details regarding the exciting presentations have been released. Let’s dive into the appealing panels related to Disney Parks & Resorts.
Friday, August 19th
History of the Disneyland Hotel (9:30am – 10:30am, Stage 28)
The only details released related to this event indicate that they will show old footage of the resort featuring Walt Disney, the Mouseketeers and Annette Funicello. I suspect there will be heavy coverage of the expansive recent renovation, which includes new dining establishments, luxury suites and Monorail-themed waterslides.
The Making of The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure (1pm – 2pm, Stage 28)
Over two decades in various levels of development, the long-awaited attraction set in the world of the 1989 animated classic finally opened this past June at Disney California Adventure Park. The omnimover-style attraction (think of The Haunted Mansion vehicles, but instead of riding on doombuggies,...

American TV made stars of Hugh Laurie and Dominic West, bypassing the traditional stage to screen route. Now two schemes hope to exploit this new path for emerging talent
A talented British actor may have to toil for a long time in the Us before hitting paydirt. But when that sought-after role in a primetime drama series comes along, it can fund a year of acting on the English stage, boost an established performer's profile and perhaps even provide a stepping stone to Hollywood.
It has worked for many British stars, from Dominic West, who starred in The Wire and is now wowing audiences in Simon Gray's Butley, to the comedian Hugh Laurie, whose role in House has made him an international celebrity. Ian McShane's delayed Us success in the western series Deadwood, meanwhile, has now seen him join an A-list cast in the summer blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Luke Macfarlane has a lot of words vying for brain space these days. In addition to his regular stint on ABC's Brothers & Sisters, he's portraying F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Jazz Age, a new play that takes us inside the mind of the famed author, at Los Angeles' Blank Theatre. "Scott's basically on the stage the entire time, so I have all these lines in my head," Macfarlane says. On Brothers & Sisters, "we were shooting a scene the other day, and I'm supposed to walk into an apartment and say, 'You're home!' And of course, the line 'You're late!' came out of my mouth, which is one of my first lines in the play." Still, Macfarlane is thrilled to have the chance to do TV and theatre simultaneously. "In a play, you're constantly trying new things out," he says. "What I really love about the theatre is that...
