Great ideas, lost in a sea of offensive material
inkblot1130 March 2005
Shawn and Jason own a business that delivers dead flowers, spoiled chocolates, and bad news messages to unsuspecting victims. If your boss has done you wrong, someone owes you money, or you wish to break someone's heart in two, call these guys. However, Shawn delivers dead flowers one day to a beautiful girl he met once in a pub. Her boyfriend's message is that they are through and he is now sleeping with another woman. Kayla is crushed. Yet, Shawn can not resist hitting on her, even when tears are falling. Is this the beginning of a beautiful relationship? And what about her psycho roomie? This script has so much promise, it truly does. The stars are comely and believable, with nice comic skills. BUT, the leading males visit strip clubs and the sexual situations are of the in-your-face variety. Please do not watch this film if you can not fast forward quickly enough or if your ethics would be mortally wounded. Even so, here's hoping someone will make a kindler, gentler, cleaner version of the movie. This one has its sweet moments, but the its walk on the wild side goes way overboard.

Waste of time
LONDON5378 June 2002
If you actually have the time to find this movie, don't. The movie really wasn't that bad. It actually has some genuinely great moments. However, it seems that the director lost control of the film somewhere in the middle. The acting was decent (Eddie does a fine job for what I'm guessing is a first timer), however all the comedic moments are wasted because of a hack editing job.

Did the director's little brother edit this?

Kevin Smith derivative piece that scrapes the barrel (more than Kevin)
belikemichaeldotcom17 January 2005
Ugh, this movie stunk. It's very derivative of Kevin Smith characters -- you know retail clerks passing the time talking about comics, Star Wars, chicks and life in general. The only difference here is that the characters are extremely weak, the plot sucks and they own the store and they don't mention ALL the tired Kevin Smith clichés (dying mid-backstroke, chick doing a dead guy in the back room, etc, ad nauseum).

I originally thought that Kevin Smith ghost-wrote/directed/etc this movie and I theorized that he was too embarrassed to put his name on it, but I can't find any evidence of that.

This is low budget film-making at its lowest. Little creativity and flat characters. Simply awful. 1/10

Pretty good movie (possible spoilers)
edblask0423 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Pretty good movie for its type. You think that you may have stepped into real life with some of the dialog and some of what the characters actually do like act quite irrationally but in ways that would be expected in real life. Some of the people are still a little too pretty to be average joes and janes --like the lead actress-- but overall this is a very good comedy. It is a tad slow at times for someone used to comedies like DodgeBall, Garfield, Anchorman, etc. but it is well worth wading through the slow parts.

Hope that this writer and the lead actor and actresses do more work like this. The idea of delivering sticking dead roses or broken up chocolates for revenge against those that dumped you is also of some interest. I keep wondering why this fad has not taken off except that if you watch this movie you might get an idea why such an idea might not lead anywhere.

Can't wait to see it again.

I had a great time at the Long Island showing of this flick, it was so funny. Great to see the cast and director out for the showing. dying to know when I can see this film again, and maybe this time get to talk to that pretty red-headed director.

Best of the fest
Erikmovieguy7 April 2003
Warning: Spoilers
I caught this gem at the NYIIFVF, a.k.a. the longest abbreviated film festival in the world. I'll admit, I didn't see every film shown at the festival, but out of the dozen or so that I was able to see, this was the best.

It's got a cute little plot that could have doomed the film to the land of cute little unoriginal chick flicks, but with some witty writing and talented direction, it manages to transcend the doom and actually give us a fresh, engaging story.

Brian O'Halloran ("Dante" from Clerks) plays the main character in a role that doesn't really allow him to show off any more acting chops than his previous roles, but he is natural and has the character down cold, and is thus able to lead a cast that works together wonderfully in every scene. It's truly a pleasure watching each of these characters interact with each other. From his scene-chewing best friend, to his love-interest whose smile truly does melt your heart and win you over, to her psycho roommate (who kind of reminded me of Ursula, the evil sea-witch in The Little Mermaid, if Ursula had been really hot and a bit of a nympho), to every customer and friend that populated the screen throughout the course of the film; if there was an award for best casting (who knows, maybe there is) I think this film should get it.

My only complaint would be the pacing towards the end of the story.

***This could be a spoiler -- it doesn't really give away any crucial plot points, but if you wanna see the movie fresh, don't read the next paragraph.***

I felt we could have made our exit a little sooner than we did. I understand the bookending concept of the punch in the eye, but if the whole ruse could be shortened, it might flow better. It just seems that there's a lot of time between the climax of the film and the rolling of the credits -- he's got the girl, now let's take a bow and close the curtain already. I understand loving the characters so much you don't want to leave them - especially in this film - but this is what would make it so easy to leave the audience wanting more (a great way to leave any audience). Instead, the characters almost overstay their welcome. This is a minor observation, especially when contrasted with the things in this film that work: character, dialogue, the beginning, the middle, basically everything other than the very end. And if you haven't seen it yet, by no means should you let this stop you from doing so - it's still most definitely worth the price of admission.

Overall, a great debut full-length feature from writer/director Jessica Hudson and the gang at Dark Features. Can't wait to see what they do next.

what a ride!
sydneyposhe13 June 2002
Julia was one of the most evil villains I've ever seen in a movie. The character was very well written and wonderfully acted. The dialogue flowed nicely and all the characters felt like real people. I found myself during the movie going, "I know someone like that", a lot. the other thing that I found refreshing was that all the actors looked like real people... people that I can relate to. very pretty, real looking girls, with out being "model types" (which I find to be unattractive myself, I'd always pick the pretty, real people). and the boys, also very handsome, but real. I was impressed with the casting and the way that the director obviously knew how to handle the actors. I'd be interested in seeing this little Canadian gem again.

Hot film...
michaelscott6098 November 2002
Saw this film in san fran... loved it. watched this film was at the underground festival, but it shouldn't be underground, this is a film that I would go and see in major theatres. I'm surprised that it hasn't been picked up by distribution companies yet, it's a gold mine. They've got a diverse cast with real people... that look like real people which I appreciated the most... I related to almost all the characters and felt for them. The director did a great job at making me care for everyone in the film, she's got a real talent and I won't be surprised if I see her as the next up and coming hot director. good work.

Excellent Film... So funny!
yourprincess611 June 2002
If you get a chance to check out this movie, go for it, you won't be disappointed A very funny film with some priceless comedic moments. The acting was pretty good, I have to say that the gentleman playing Trevor was excellent. The directing was very good for a first time film maker, I was very impressed. A sweet romantic comedy, I'd certainly check it out again.

From reality TV to a bright future in film
hisbigness20 August 2002
A well done, entertaining and quirky comedy, but for me the most pleasant surprise was the leading turn taken by novice actor Eddie McGee.

He had an energy, enthusiasm and earnest freshness that really stood out, making his gruff character seem more charming. He makes you like his character, and carried himself remarkably well for someone whose sole acting exposure was winning a reality tv show. I hope to see more of him in the future, good work by the director in getting so much out of him in his first role!

Roses...
stevemills12111 June 2002
A very funny, edgy flick. looking forward to seeing it again, it was a great idea for a film, got me wondering if there are businesses like that out there? Everyone did a great job, the cinematography was only so-so, but the story line, directing and actors made up for the lack of camera movement.

Drop Dead Funny!
ambermarsh6611 June 2002
Hot guys, strip clubs, eddie with his shirt off, how can you go wrong with this movie? I laughed so hard, especially when Eddie was smashing the chocolates on the desk with an index card box. I can't wait to own it on DVD! Looking forward to another Toronto showing, I know tons of people who'd love to see it!

Good luck with the movie!

Refreshing and Drop Dead Original
Altuniverz30 July 2004
OK it has some hiccups, but this is fun. It rings true, Brian O'Halloran (Clerks) is GREAT. The film is funny and youthfully energized -it's good in that first time film-makler way. Fresh.

Wish it was longer in Cinemas. Not boring, really funny bits. Music track is often cool if a bit underground. I don't understand why there aren't more mainstream reviews of this picture.

What's more is this is a guy film by a female director writer. Just enough to give it some cool sensibilities. By the way Eddie McGee of Big Brother (the original) fame is really rather good, natural, and this Barbie has a lovely slutty edge -would like to see her in something else too..

Fresh Roses!
elisa82228 August 2002
A funny original storyline in a movie that was stolen by Eddie's raw talent and an ecclectic supporting cast. I was lucky enough to see the Toronto premiere. The film was well received and I keep hoping to see it picked up in wider distribution so that it gets the exposure it deserves.

A very funny film - it also defied most comedies and made me care
ravageeject20 May 2002
This is a great sit down and watch with your friends movie, the dialogue has some absolutely priceless moments that you will keep repeating for days afterwards. The real triumph of the movie is that it a) gives us some REAL female characters and b) unlike so many comedies whose emotional moments feel tacked on and mandated by some "higher power" DDR's story elegantly and wonderfully incorporates honest feelings of falling in love, and how hard it can be to let go of something, even if you know it's no good for you. A promising, promising debut.

bforsythe20 August 2002
I saw this film at a film festival in Toronto and it blew me and its competition away. A FUNNY and romantic film that flows smoothly from beginning to end. A very original story and acted well. This film is in my top 10.

Awesome Job -- Great film!
barneytv7511 June 2002
I recently had the opportunity to see DROP DEAD ROSES at a festival. I wasn't surprised to see that the film won Best Picture. It was awesome! The crowd had a lot of fun (I believe it was the only show at the festival that sold out) -- I only wish I could have met the director to shake her hand! I know this sounds like I know her, but I don't...I wish I did! She knows how to tell an entertaining story and work well with the actors. What can I say -- I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!!

I initially wanted to see the film because it starred the CLERKS guy, but I was thrilled that everyone was so damn good! I gave this film a 10 because it's worth it. I wish more movies were made like this.

I don't know when or where it's playing next, but if the opportunity is there -- drop everything to go see DROP DEAD ROSES.

Eddie Mc Gee is brilliant.
doomboo20008 May 2003
Eddie Mc Gee is brilliant. Any scene with him is hilarious, his natural talent goes beyond his first hit, the tv show Big brother.

This low budget dark comedy contains very funny moments. Brian o'Halloran does a good job probing he is more than a Kevin Smith's creature. Chris Demantoupolus is another amazing discovery as the bad guy. A must see film.
