Samantha Weinstein, a Canadian actor who appeared in the 2013 remake of Stephen King’s Carrie starring Chloë Grace Moretz, died May 14 at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto after being diagnosed in 2021 with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She was 28.
Her death was announced on her Instagram page by her family. “After two and a half years of cancer treatment, and a lifetime of jet setting around the world, voicing a plethora of cartoon animals, making music, and knowing more about life than most people ever will, she is off on her next adventure,” her family wrote.
Launching her show business career as a child actor in 2003 with a role on an episode of the Canadian TV series The Red Green Show, Weinstein would go on to appear in such series as The Winning Season (2004), Wild Card (2005), The Border (2008), Less Than Kind and Burden of Truth (2020), among others. A new documentary charts the history of the Call Of Duty videogames. Here's our review...
Games
The Call Of Duty videogame series is, as gamers will attest, a juggernaut. It attracts revenues akin to those of blockbuster movies, cost about as much to make, and every year, queues of people turn up for a midnight opening to get their hands on the new release. Not bad for a franchise that started in 2003, and has now become one of the very biggest videogaming - and entertainment - series on the planet.

Lost, Arrow, The Handmaid's Tale... do flashback episodes ever get you down?
We’ve all been there, haven’t we? We’ve waited a week for the brand new ep of our fav new show, desperate to see some forward momentum, some steps towards being satisfied or a road to resolution. But as the intro fades, something seems amiss, out of place and out of time.

High school can be hell, especially for outcasts targeted by cliques with malevolent mischief on their minds. As readers of Stephen King's Carrie and its multiple film adaptations know, when you mess with a telekinetic outsider, fires tend to roar and blood spatters the walls. Scream Factory is giving the Generation Y versions of King's seminal story a high-definition upgrade, with their Carrie / The Rage: Carrie 2 Blu-ray hitting shelves on April 14th. Ahead of the Blu-ray's release, we have trailers and clips from both films, including the iconic blood-drenched prom queen crowning and Rachel's glass-shattering house party interruption.

If you've been on the internet at all the past couple weeks, you've undoubtedly seen the Als Ice Bucket Challenge, a charity trend sweeping the nation to raise money to fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Many people seem to think that Charlie Sheen delivered the best video of this challenge by dumping $10,000 in cash on his head, all of which he was donating to the cause. However, Dave Grohl and his band Foo Fighters have taken this fun, charitable trend to incredible new heights by creating an elaborate recreation of the infamous pig's blood scene at the prom in Stephen King's Carrie. It's awesome. Watch! Here's the Foo Fighters Als Ice Bucket Challenge video (via Rolling Stone): Grohl was challenged by friend and fellow musician Zac Brown of the appropriately named Zac Brown Band,...

This story contains a spoiler for the new Carrie movie in paragraph three.
The remake/reboot/fresh take on Stephen King's Carrie that arrived in cinemas towards the end of last year had one or two good moments to it, but it never really managed to find enough of an identity of its own for our money. Its box office performance was decent enough, earning $82m worldwide off a $35m budget. By the time the assorted home releases have been taken into account, it'll be in profit.
But what's also clear is that it didn't make enough money for Sony to press ahead with more. For director Kimberly Peirce has revealed in a new interview "that was something that came up, the idea of Carrie two, three, four, five six,...

On this week's Voice Film Club podcast, Stephanie Zacharek of The Village Voice and Amy Nicholson of L.A. I'm not the biggest fan of remakes, but there are a few of them that have been made over the years that have been just as good or better than the original. I was pretty disappointed when I learned that Stephen King's Carrie was going to get a remake. I grew up on the original Brian De Palma film, and it scared the hell out of me when I was a kid -- and no, I don't know why, but my parents let me watch these kinds of rated R movies while growing up. I wasn't really familiar with the director of the film, Kimberly Peirce, but she managed to cast a group of very talented actors led by Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz, who were both awesome in the movie!
Moore absolutely stole the show as Carrie's insane religious mother. She was scary as hell, and gave an incredible performance,...

In anticipation of the release of the Chloe Grace Moretz remake of Stephen King's Carrie, Cinema Sins has made a new video that points out everything wrong with Brian de Palma's 1976 version. I grew up watching the original film, and it freaked me the hell out. But after watching this, it looks like maybe a remake isn't such a bad idea.

One thing I'm truly happy that I didn't hear from my mom growing up is her telling me to go in my closet where a bleeding crucifix was waiting to scare the shit out of me.

Of the generation of confident, bearded, cine-literate film-school graduates dubbed the Movie Brats who set out to take over Hollywood in the 1970s (Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsese, Milius, Lucas et al), none was more technically accomplished or referential than Brian De Palma. His work has been prolific and uneven, with mainstream successes like The Untouchables (1987) and Mission: Impossible (1996), and mainstream failures, most notably The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990). His best films were made between his version of Stephen King's Carrie (1976) and the Vietnam-set Casualties of War (1989). His most daring films are two brilliant thrillers – Dressed to Kill (1980) and Blow Out (1981).

Interviews conducted by and copyright Edward Gross Chloe Moretz, who will follow the reprisal of her role as Hit-Girl with the remake of Stephen King's Carrie, points out that the three years between Kick-Ass films has represented an opportunity for true growth in herself and the character of Mindy. Here's a great new international trailer for the new feature film adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie. The new trailer offers a few bits of new footage from the film. As a fan of King's work, I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. It looks like it will be a pretty solid adaptation.
The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White and her daughter Carrie. Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson, but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell, regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc.

Fresh footage of the new Carrie movie, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, arrives in a new international trailer for the movie...
Whilst Brian De Palma's film of Stephen King's Carrie remains excellent, it did leave room in the source material for further exploration of the story and character. That's where we hope Kimberly Peirce's film is going to kick in. And even though there are familiar moments that the new Carrie is going to have to touch on, we hope that this new take on the material finds some room for an identity of its own.
The casting is certainly cutting the mustard. We'd have bought a ticket alone for Julianne Moore (how she's still not won an Oscar is a mystery of modern times), but the involvement of Chloe Grace Moretz in the title role seems a smart move to us too.

So, the remake of Stephen King's Carrie arrives in theaters via Sony on October 18th, but will this have any chance of being remembered as much as the original Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie starrer of 1976? Perhaps, it's a tough job to remake a classic, especially a cult favorite such as this one. The film scripted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa now has a new poster with Chloë Grace Moretz causing havoc on a road, with burning cars on each side. Carrie also includes Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Ansel Elgort, Gabriella Wilde, Portia Doubleday, Alex Russell and Skyler Wexler, among others and of course is based on King's novel.

Hugo stars Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz are set to reunite for The White Circus , a fantasy adventure that Screen Daily reports will also star Andrea Riseborough and Christian Friedel. The film, which marks the feature debut of filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski (best known for their short Maurice Sendak adaptation "Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life"), is said to be a "dark fairytale" that follows a crashed pilot and his travels across a war-torn land. Butterfield can next be seen in Gavin Hood's Ender's Game while Mortez will be taking on the title role in Kimberly Peirce's update of Stephen King's Carrie . First of all, if you still haven't seen the original feature film adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie, you need to go watch it now. As good as this remake looks I still don't think it will live up to the horrific creepiness of the first one.
The studio has released a couple of new images from the film. One features Chloe Moretz drenched in pigs blood, which I know we've seen before. The second one features Moretz and her crazy mother played by Julianne Moore. Even though it won't be as good as the first movie, it still looks like the remake will be an entertaining horror flick!
The new adaptation was directed by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry, Stop-Loss) and also stars Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Alex Russell, Gabriella Wilde, and Ansel Elgort. It's set to be released on October 18th, 2013.

Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore star in a fresh take on Stephen King's Carrie. Here's the trailer...
There are a few good reasons to be more interested in a fresh cinematic take on Carrie than your usual remake/reboot/whatever you want to call it. In front of the camera, for instance, this new take on Stephen King's novel features Kick-Ass' Chloe Grace Moretz in the title role. Plus there's the small matter of the brilliant Julianne Moore playing her mother.
And then, behind the camera, director Kimberly Peirce, who made the excellent Boys Don't Cry, may yet prove to be an inspired choice. Her film is set to be a very different one from Brian De Palma's classic, and the first trailer for the movie - while telling quite a lot of the story - does start to get that across.

I'm a fan of the original adaption of Stephen King's Carrie, and I was really hoping that this new remake would end up being a decent film. That being said, it looks like they might have pulled it off. The new adaptation was directed by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry, Stop-Loss), and it stars Chole Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Alex Russell, Gabriella Wilde, and Ansel Elgort.
As you'll see in the trailer, the director is putting more of a focus on the telekinetic powers that Carrie has, which is a different approach. Then of course the trailer highlights all of the classic scenes that I remember from the book, and the original film. In the end, we're going to get to see that blood filled, fiery revenge at the end of the movie. It's gonna be great!

Previous glimpses of the upcoming feature adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie have focused on the title character post-meltdown, all blood covered and glowering after things at the big dance got out of control - to say the least. This new snippet of the film, courtesy of Entertainment Tonight, gives us a peek at the events leading up to that infamous outburst. Taking on the role once famously portrayed by Sissy Spacek, Chloe Grace Moretz plays Carrie White, a timid outsider at her high school, who's stuck under the thumb of an overbearing mother. We catch a glimpse of Julianne Moore in that role in the video above, as she looks up when Carrie's upstairs getting her telekinesis on in disturbing fashion. Something tells me Mom's not going to be happy about that. The bed scene also seems like an obvious indication that Carrie's not entirely in control of these mind-powers,...

The adaptation of Gillian Flynn's mystery novel adaptation Dark Places has Chloe Grace Moretz in negotiations to join Charlize Theron. Moretz would play Diondra, according to Deadline, in the story which tells of a woman forced to re-face the killing of her family over twenty years ago. In Dark Places, Theron plays Libby Day who testified against her brother in the killing of her family and now, she's faced with a group called The Kill Club who believe he isn't guilty in the murder, and set out to prove his innocence. Gilles Paquet-Brenner directs as well as adapting the script based on the 2009 novel. Theron also produces Denver and Delilah Productions. Moretz can be seen next in the very-eagerly-anticipated Kick-Ass 2 which hits theaters this summer, on August 16th. After that, she's starring alongside Julian Moore in the remake of Stephen King's Carrie. The Let Me In star's also...

Anne Hathaway, Chloe Moretz and Sam Rockwell are in negotiations to join Lynn Shelton's Laggies dark comedy. According to Deadline, the story follows a Megan (Hathaway) who gets freaked out when her boyfriend proposes, and pretends to go on a career retreat when she's actually hiding out with Annika (Moretz), her 16 year-old new best pal. Also in talks to board Laggies is Mark Webber, where he'll play Megan's boyfriend, while Rockwell could land the role of Craig, a character we don't know more of at that point in time. Moretz is up next in the eagerly-anticipated Kick-Ass 2 reprising her role as Hit Girl. In October, she's the title character in the reboot of Stephen King's Carrie adaptation.

When the current theatrical reboot (a sequel and toothless TV remake had already come and gone) of Carrie was announced, there was a lot of teeth gnashing and cries of "leave the classics alone!," mostly by me. But as details began to leak out, the prospect became more intriguing. Gay director Kimberly Pierce gave us the masterpiece Boys Don't Cry, and the fabulous Julianne Moore signed up to play Carrie's psychotic fanatical mother. Chloe Moretz doesn't look anything like Stephen King's Carrie, but then neither did Sissy Spacek, so I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.
Carrie was supposed to open in March, but the studio has pushed it back to October, which means they're either hoping for Halloween dollars ... or it's a sign of a troubled production.
But while we wait to rain judgment down on the new version of our favorite telekinetic teen, let's take...

It seems a little sad to me that there is a new generation of young actors and filmmakers who have been essentially forced to rely on remakes for their big breaks, but I suppose if they play their cards right, they can turn these opportunities into something more. Chloe Moretz has done exactly that, having starred in Let Me In, Dark Shadows and now the upcoming remake of Stephen King's Carrie, but also mixing in movies like Kick-Ass, Hick and Hugo. While Carrie is yet another remake that has been met with criticism for being simply unnecessary, Let Me In is proof that these things can indeed turn out better than expected. The first trailer for the new Carrie has arrived online this week, and although it is only a teaser, it seems to hint that they are getting a lot more ambitious with the size and the scope of the story.

This past weekend the crowds at New York Comic Con got their first look at the upcoming remake of Stephen King's Carrie, but now the first teaser trailer for the new horror film has made its way online courtesy of Yahoo! Our own Kristy Puchko was in the Jacob Javits Center this past weekend when director Kimberley Peirce, Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore took to the stage to talk about their new film. You can read all about what she saw and heard by clicking on this link. Personally, I like the part where they are talking about all the blood used in the movie and how Moretz would just walk back to her hotel room covered in red goo. Probably a weird thing to see at the end of the day for both the guests and the management. It's also kind of amazing nobody snapped a photo of that...

First poster for the remake of Stephen King's Carrie, starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore After adding several videos from the panel of Sony's Carrie reboot at this year's New York Comic Con, we're pleased to add the first bloody poster. Opening Spring, 2013, Carrie follows a sheltered high school girl who hellishly unleashes her newly developed telekinetic powers after being pushed over the limit by her peers. Kimberley Peirce directs from the screenplay written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, based on King's beloved novel of the same title. Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Gabrielle Wilde, Alex Russell, Michelle Nolden, Max Toppline and Cynthia Preston also star.

In case you missed the live stream of the panel for Stephen King's Carrie at New York Comic Con this last weekend you can now check it out right here! Unfortunately, you won't see the teaser trailer for the movie that was shown at the Con here in these videos, but it was still a cool panel. You can read our description of the footage and summary of the panel here.
Director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry), producer Kevin Misher and actresses Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore showed up to talk about the film. See what they had to say about it below!
Synopsis:
A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

The only thing that makes me even slightly interested in the upcoming remake of Stephen King's Carrie is the fact it's directed by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry). Because, really, what is there to do with this film that wasn't already done in Brian DePalma's 1976 original? Even the casting of Chloe Moretz (Let Me In) seems too on-the-nose to be worth getting too excited for. As for the film, the story is no different than your remember: The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Julianne Moore) and her daughter Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday), but only Chris' best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde), regrets their actions.

You Will Know Her Name. Or rather, You Already Know Her Name. Screen Gems has unveiled the first teaser poster for Kimberly Peirce's remake of Stephen King's Carrie, starring Chloe Moretz as the high schooler with special powers. Dark Horizons is where this art comes from, after debuting at the New York Comic-Con presentation this weekend, and they call it an "international" poster. Which I believe is a way of getting the MPAA off their ass because it's so bloody and wouldn't be approved otherwise. The first trailer arrives early next week, but in the meantime, take a look at the bloody face of Carrie in Carrie 2013 below. Kimberly Peirce (of Boys Don't Cry) directs this new adaptation of Stephen King's novel Carrie, with a screenplay by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (a writer and producer from "Glee" and "Big Love"). Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass, Let Me In, Hugo) stars in the...

A few days ago we brought you your first looking at Chloe Moretz drenched in "pig's blood" from the remake of Stephen King's Carrie. Here's a few photos from the set of the film showing Moretz in her prom dress, before she's covered in blood and after. I'm really looking forward to this movie, and I hope it turns out being a good film, but it'll be hard to beat the Brian De Palma original.
Here's the synopsis:

Our first look at the remake of Stephen King's Carrie features a blood soaked Chloë Grace Moretz in the title role, and Julianne Moore as her insane mother, Margaret White. The movie is being directed Kimberly Peirce (Stop-Loss, Boys Don't Cry) for Screen Gems.
The first film adaptation of the story scarred the hell out of me when I was a kid. Yes, I used to watch some pretty jacked up movies when I was kid. Moretz is a very talented young actress and I think she's going to do a great job in the role. Moore had this to say about the relationship of the mother and daughter,
This woman has clearly had a psychotic break, perhaps several. But what’s sad about it for me is that she’s clearly sick and here’s this poor child in the thrall of this person who is seriously ill. And on top of that,...

Remaking Brian De Palma's adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie is a weird one to me. I'm not sure where director Kimberly Peirce is going to take things to make it seem like a worthwhile venture. It's still a girl in high school (Chloe Moretz) with psychic powers and a wacko mother (Julianne Moore). I guess she could have a cell phone now, but when Entertainment Weekly delivered the first images from the film and says it will be a "modernized, more character-focused adaptation" than the previous one I'm not sure how much that really tells us. Clearly from the images we're going to get another prom night drenching, though Carrie, this time, appears to be outside and not on stage at prom, but other than that we're talking about the same thing once again. Both Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek, playing mom and daughter, were nominated for Oscars for...

Perhaps it's only natural that horror's rise in popularity – in film as well as books – tends to mirror that of the Conservative party
In May 2001, Margaret Thatcher gave a speech to a gathering of Tories in Plymouth. She told the party faithful: "I was told beforehand my arrival was unscheduled, but on the way here I passed a local cinema and it turns out you were expecting me after all. The billboard read The Mummy Returns."
A joke, perhaps, but one that shouldn't be dismissed too lightly, because as the horror genre enjoys one of its shambling, cyclical returns to form, could it possibly be that such spikes in supernatural fiction's popularity do, in fact, coincide with Conservative gains on the UK's political battlefield?
A cursory glance at the points where horror fiction did enjoy periods of resurgence do tend to follow an upward graph with Tory fortunes. For example,...

In her young career as an actress Chloe Moretz has played both a vampire and a werewolf. She's now in negotiations to play a zombie in a film called Maggie. So it looks like she will complete the monster movie trifecta. Paddy Considine is also in talks to join the film project.
The film will be directed by commercial director Henry Hobson from a Black List script written by John Scott. According to Variety the film is set against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse, and the "story concerns a father's unconditional love for his daughter." Considine would play the father, and Moretz would play his zombie daughter. There's no other details on the story, but I imagine the dad will be trying to keep her zombie daughter safe, and keep her out of trouble. Or hell! Maybe they're both zombies and he's still trying to take care of her.

Earlier today, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk to Oscar-winning actress Sissy Spacek about her new memoir "My Extraordinary Ordinary Life," which is released this week. While we plan on running that interview sometime next week, we were surprised to learn that she hadn't been asked about MGM's planned new movie based on Stephen King's Carrie , being that the 1976 Brian De Palma movie was a breakout for her. It would probably be a racier story if Spacek hated the idea of them doing a remake but like with everything else, she had a great attitude about the whole thing, including the idea of 15-year-old Chloe Moretz taking on the difficult title role (which she talked to us about last week .) "I think she's a wonderful actress," Spacek said and got even...

Word reached us last month that Chloe Moretz had landed the title role in the upcoming new version of Stephen King's Carrie. With Moretz currently out doing the rounds for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, the subject of the telekinetic teen has obviously been raised more than once, and she's been happy to tease some details and generally enthuse.Director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) is, Moretz told Coming Soon, "a total genius and the right woman for the job." She also claims that she's avoiding going anywhere near Brian De Palma's 1976 horror classic starring Sissy Spacek, but that her version will be "darker and more psychological; more Black Swan.""We're really looking into Carrie's mind," says Chloe, "and into the relationship between Carrie and [her mother] Margaret." That relationship is, you'll recall, a fractious one to say the least, with Carrie's mousy lack of confidence stemming in no small part from her mother's fundamentalist craziness.
