As a gamer there are genres that I don’t play as often as others, RPGs being one and racing games the other. When it comes to the latter I tend to find racers that I love and stick with those – games such as Outrun and its sequel, Burnout Paradise, and Split Second (which is Still my all-time favourite racing game). I’ve put hours and hours of game time into both the PS3 version of Outrun 2: Coast to Coast and the Xbox 360 version of Split Second in particular; in fact I’ve been berated more than once for having a quick blast on both games when I should be getting ready for work, should be cooking and even when I should be blogging/reviewing!

I love a good psychological thriller. If there's a supernatural element to the story, it also has the potential to mess with my mind and freak me out. There's a new film coming out from Sinister director Scott Derrickson called Deliver Us From Evil that looks like it will do just that. One of the craziest aspects of the film is the fact that it's based on actual events.
I've always been interested in the supernatural, and I've done a good amount of reading up on this kind of stuff over the years. When I see a movie that is based on a true story, I like to do a little research to see what really happened.
Deliver Us From Evil, which premieres July 2, follows the true account of NYPD Sargent Ralph Sarchie, and it's based on the book he wrote, Beware the Night. The stories are directly taken from Sarchie's undisclosed police files.

Gordon (Richard Lumsden – Sightseers, TV’s The Catherine Tate Show) is determined that he and best friend Keith (Karl Theobald – TV’s 2012, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa) will conquer Wainright’s Coast to Coast Walk from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire. He also believes that having his film student son document the adventure is the perfect way to commemorate their achievement, but when a stray conversation determines that old school friends Steve (Jeremy Swift – Jupiter Ascending, TV’s Downton Abbey) and Julian (Ned Dennehy – Tyrannosaur, TV’s Luther) join them on the trip, best laid plans lead straight to multiple mid-life crises.

1: Coast to Coast: The Building Blocks The legitimacy of both film and hip-hop as art forms has been contested over the years. At the start of their respective life cycles, critics considered both fads of popular culture and never thought that they would transcend their origins and become the sturdy artistic medium and genre that they have today. The French New Wave, the film movement led by film critics turned filmmakers Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut from the late 50s to mid 60s, directly challenged conventional filmmaking techniques with improvisation, radical experimentation, and self-aware touches. Hip- hop was a cultural movement rooted in many...

Twenty years ago this week, as the dust of the late-night talk show wars between Letterman and Leno had finally begun to settle, a familiar face came on the scene: Space Ghost. In 15-minute episodes that would have gone viral had anyone known what viral was back then, the Cartoon Network series (which eventually became the linchpin of the channel’s late-night programming block, Adult Swim) cast the stiff-as-a-board 1966 Hanna-Barbera action hero as a talk-show host, interviewing a roster of celebrities — some in on the joke, some very clearly not — in awkward, unforgettable segments that anticipated everything from Jimmy Fallon’s flop-sweat interview with Robert De Niro to President Obama’s appearance with Zach Galifianakis on "Between Two Ferns." And the show’s name rhymed, which was important.Largely absent from TV screens today — though Adult Swim ran an unannounced marathon of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast on April...

The idea of classic television “holding up over time” is something that eventually loses meaning, or at least has to be qualified. If you go back far enough, none of them really manage a serious appeal to young enough audiences, but some of them are nevertheless wonderfully watchable to any age, and any generation.
The Dick Van Dyke Show is one such show, and that is largely the result of it really being so far ahead of its time. For all that it occasionally leans too far into the “zany” category (as an example, I Love Lucy, I think, does not actually survive beyond its era), the comedy of the show stands up, as do the well-written emotional overtones.
There’s a new DVD set available that highlights what it calls the Classic Mary Tyler Moore episodes, and that largely mythical focus aside, it’s a great collection. The set comes with 20 episodes that,...

If you’ve read my work on this site or listened to my podcast Geeks Coast to Coast, you probably have realized that Kitty Pryde is my favorite comics character and Ultimate Spider-Man is my all-time favorite comic. So this pairing of Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Kitty Pryde is a bit personal for me. They began dating in 2005′s Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1 where they bonded over their outsider status, pop culture and science, and crime fighting. Kitty Pryde and Spider-Man broke up three story arcs later after the “Ultimate Clone Saga” when Peter reconciled with Mary-Jane after rescuing her from his clone, Kaine. However, after a period of awkwardness, they stayed friends and teamed up a few times before Kitty’s untimely death. I think that Spider-Man and Kitty Pryde worked as a couple in the Ultimate Universe because of their shared outsider status and common interests and experiences as teens with superpowers.

Actor and director who brought dark good looks and a commanding presence to his roles
Austrian by birth, Swiss by circumstance and international by reputation, Maximilian Schell, who has died aged 83, was a distinguished actor, director, writer and producer. However, he will be best remembered as an actor, especially for his Oscar-winning performance in Stanley Kramer's Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) – an early highlight among scores of television and movie appearances. He also directed opera, worked tirelessly in the theatre and made six feature films, including Marlene (1984) - a tantalising portrait of Dietrich, his co-star in Judgment, who is heard being interviewed but not seen, except in movie extracts.
Schell courted controversy and much of his work, including The Pedestrian (1973), dealt with the second world war, its attendant crimes and the notion of collective guilt. In 1990, when he was offered a special award for his contributions to German film, he refused to accept it.

Free Comic Book Day, a day for celebrating comic books and the quirky shops that sell them, is officially one month away (Saturday May 4th). Here at Sound On Sight we decided to jump the gun and celebrate our love for local comic book shops by sharing what’s great about our own geeky haunts.
In a world where digital is overtaking print, there’s something to be said about the tangible experience of visiting your local comic shop. Browsing opens up a world of new experiences and titles that you aren’t really afforded with the online experience. Don’t get me wrong, sites like Comixology are fantastic, and those guys do an incredible job recommending and exposing titles, but the digital buying experience still lacks the explorative, almost ritualistic tendencies of a comic fans visit to their shop. Where else can you have your own mailbox filled each...

This week is the long-lived Cartoon Network series “Space Ghost: Coast to Coast,” an animated, late-night talk show featuring old Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Later, Kevin James talks about his new film project “The Creed,” and we talk about musical guilty pleasures (except Matt Sinclair and Richard Thornton who were too cool for school at age 11). Also, tune in at the end to hear about an opportunity to guest on the show. Enjoy!

Rosa Salazar (Parenthood) has been cast in Fox‘s drama pilot Boomerang, from John Wells Prods. and Warner Bros TV. Salazar, repped by Seven Summits and TalentWorks, plays Olive, the ex-girlfriend who Sam (Stahl-David) has never forgotten. The casting stems from the talent deal Fox signed with Salazar following her co-starring role on the network’s comedy pilot Little Brother last year. She recently guest starred on Fox’s Ben & Kate. Brit Ben Aldridge, repped by Anonymous and Hamilton/Hodell, rounds out the regular cast of the CW/Wbtv pilot The Selection. He plays Prince Rafe, the younger brother of Prince Maxon (Michael Malarkey) who loves his country and takes his leadership role seriously — but he does have a secret. Evie Thompson has...

Pippa Middleton is not included in the line-up for the Coast to Coast race, despite her saying she was keen to take part. The 29-year-old beauty - younger sister of Britain's Duchess Catherine - had said she planned the gruelling multi-sport race in New Zealand next month, saying it would be an incentive to lay off on the calorie-heavy festive diet. However, her name is missing from the entry list although race organisers haven't ruled out Pippa entering under another moniker. Last month, keen athlete wrote in The Spectator magazine: 'Next year I am hoping to do the Coast to Coast in New Zealand, which is a triathlon (running, cycling and kayaking) from the South Island to Sumner Beach on...

Friday is the end of the world, at least if you believe the mysticism that surrounds the final date of the centuries-old Mayan calendar.
Indeed, there's some talk of prepping for doomsday, but America's leading talker on UFOs and unexplained phenomena won't be addressing his millions of followers from a subterranean bunker.
In fact, he's pretty sure life will go on, even if it will be filled with controversy over secret government files on what our leaders truly know about extraterrestrial visitations.
"I'm a staunch believer that, no matter what kind of a roller-coaster of life we may be on, we're gonna be here. It's not going to be rosy or a smooth ride, but we're gonna make it and one of the things I always say is we're in this together, no matter what," said George Noory, host of "Coast to Coast Am," the most listened to overnight radio program in North America,...

The second installment of Louie’s “Late Show” arc can be summed up by the brief, seemingly random scene in which Jane, the younger of Louie’s two daughters, sees, as does Louie, that an elderly woman is stealing groceries and neglects her father’s restrained urgings to ignore the shoplifting, yelling loudly until the store security guard comes to apprehend the woman. Afterward, Jane says, “I did good, didn’t I?” Well, yes and no, Jane. Of course an innocent little girl seeing an adult break the rules will want to notify the proper authorities, but Louie, being the adult he is with a complex set of ethics, was in no rush to interfere with the shoplifter as I think most adults wouldn’t care if some poor old woman gets away with a few extra vegetables. However, generally stealing is wrong, just as selling out is,...

The annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase is a great way to support the many local filmmakers who practice their art in our area. Cinema St. Louis, our city’s non-profit cinema-related event planning group, will present The Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase July 8-12. This is the 12th annual presentation, which serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. The Showcase screens works that were written, directed, edited, or produced by St. Louis natives or films with strong local ties. The 16 film programs that screen at the Tivoli from July 8-12 serve as the Showcase’s centerpiece. The programs range from full-length fiction features and documentaries to multi-film compilations of fiction and documentary shorts. Many programs include post-screening Q&As with filmmaker. It all ends with a closing-Night Awards Party Thursday July 12th sponsored by Stella Artois from 8 p.m. to midnight at Blueberry Hill‘s Duck Room,...

Last week brought Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut to the shelves in Coriolanus, in which he starred as the eponymous lead alongside Gerard Butler, as well as the likes of Michael Dowse’s Goon, and Madonna’s W.E.
This week has, as ever, a fantastic new selection of films and TV programmes available for purchase from today, including three of my all-time favourite TV programmes. On top of that, there’s an Oscar winner, an Oscar nominee, and one film that everyone was talking about in the run-up to the awards season but was noticeably absent when the Academy Award nominees were announced in January.
My personal picks of the week:
With so much choice, I was forced to divide into two categories of film and TV this week:
James Bobbins’ The Muppets & Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar
Entourage Season 8, Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 8 & One Tree Hill Season 9

Nothing Like I Planned: The Art of John Mellencamp Tennessee State Museum
John Mellencamp doesn't see himself as an activist, which I suspect is his humility speaking. There is no escaping the fact that Mellencamp is political artist. And I say this with the utmost respect, as his views are heartfelt, witnessed first-hand and lifelong. With work ranging from the alarming "Strange Fruit" (2006), which points to past, horrific atrocities; to the straightforward "Coast to Coast" (2005), which reveals the continuing problems and degradation more and more are facing across our once-great nation, we see the thoughts and concerns of a passionate creator. And like one of his greatest influences, Max Beckmann, Mellencamp paints powerful, impassioned, difficult, and haunting imagery that will find its way deep into the mind of the viewer as it picks and prods memories, moods, and impressions most would like to overlook.
