Although dated in the eyes of modern viewers, there is no doubt that "Hog Slaughtering 6" - or "Porc Six D'abattage" as it was titled for its European release - is a seminal piece of art, laying the foundations for modern-day slasher flicks such as the Nightmare on Elm Street and Jason series. Many critics lambast this film for being highly derivative of the first five entries in the popular "Hog Slaughtering" series, but one must admire the director's unflinching portrayal of the violence inherent in the relationship between man and domesticated pig. Maynard J. Krebs, in an uncredited role, plays the part of the Hog Slaughterer with relish and aplomb, while Hog #259 is thoroughly convincing as the intended victim. The dichotomy of the piece - centered around the Slaughterer's desire to do his job properly vs the hog's will to live - is amply demonstrated to the viewer by the two leads, who bring great depth to their roles. Right from the opening ominous knife sharpening scene, the viewer's attention is held for the entire 3 minutes of the feature. The shocking - yet poignant - finale is one that will linger in the viewer's minds long after the credits fade. 5 stars.
