I had the opportunity to watch this movie one night on PAX tv. It is about three mermaid sisters who are looking for revenge on the fisherman who murdered their father. One of the sisters lives on land, the other comes up every now and then for a "good time" and the third has never set foot on the ground before and hates all human beings. This provides some extra conflict when deciding what to do about the fisherman, which I have to admit really helped the story along. There are several subplots of sibling rivalry, romance, etc. some of which probably could have been left out. The special effects really were not bad for a low budge-made for tv movie. They also explore a lot of old mermaid lore, which was pretty interesting. All in all it really wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. If you liked the movie "Splash" I would give this one a chance. Who knows; you might get HOOKED. LOL

It sucks to be a mermaid fan. Finding a live-action movie dealing with mermaids is difficult. Here's one that has *three* mermaids, and is online for free, in decent quality. So what if the plot is a pile of clichés and the acting isn't great? I can dig it.
But I can't dig these mermaids. Twice I tried to watch this movie and I couldn't. I try to avoid using the word "prep" at all costs, being that I'm almost 30 years old. But I can think of no other word to describe these "mermaids." Never mind that they seem too human-- plenty of tongue-in-cheek fantasy movies do that. I don't care if they're kind of vein or valley-girl-like; Aquamarine was that way and I liked her. But these mermaids transcend that. They aren't preppy in a forgivable, fictional way; these actresses literally say their lines like they have no idea what they're actually saying, and are on the verge of unleashing the typical rehearsed-preppy-girl- laugh at how "dumb" this script is. "Like, OMG mermaids? like that's so weird, Britney! Well, like, Lauren, like, I did kind of like Ariel as a kid. Oh my god let's comb our hair with forks! T'HEHEHEHEHEHEHHEE omygod...no, I'd never really do that, that'd be so weird. Hehe (slowly brushes streaked hair out of face). Let's go to the mall later on.
Great directing decision there. This is absolutely the type of person that the typical fantasy fan will relate to and want to watch for an hour and a half.
This movie is a cruel taunt to mermaid fans. Fittingly, the movie itself is like the sirens of old; luring you in with the thing you're desperate for, only to deliver your worst nightmare.
No matter how much you love mermaids, this just isn't worth it. All you'll find are obnoxious Barbies with fish tails. That's it.

I'll admit I didn't actually watch this movie from the beginning, I only caught the end. However, in that time, myself and my friend definitely noted at least 5 instances where this "film" could have shifted into one of those 1 am shows on Cinemax. Honestly the transition would have been seamless. Starting from the scene in the prison to the end of the movie with the delivery boy, sexual innuendo abounded. Add to that the cheesy dialogue, mediocre special effects, and paper-thin plot and you have the makings of a fairly good skin flick. Seriously all that was missing was some steamy scenes and a pizza guy.

While fishing offshore, the ambitious fisherman Mallick (Sean Taylor) uses explosives and a machine gun and kills the father of three gorgeous mermaid sisters. Diana (Erika Heynatz), the oldest and strongest one, lived with her father and has a powerful trident weapon which becomes a type of hair clip and decides to look for her sisters to chase the killer. June (Sarah Laine) lives in a boat, has a magic mirror, works at the local aquarium and has a crush on the Coast Guard officer Randy (Daniel Frederiksen). Venus (Nikita Ager) has the power of seducing men, has a magic tiara and works as an aquatic dancer in a coastal bar. Together, the three sisters try to find a way to bring justice to the death of their father. 'Mermaids' is one of those movies quite silly, but delightful to be seen. The story, full of magic and fantasy, is delicious. The gorgeous cast is a collyrium for the men eyes. The locations are wonderful. 'Mermaids' is a great entertainment for the whole family. My vote is seven.

I liked this movie so much I believe that it should be a TV series. Three beautiful young mermaids who have the ability to have legs while they're dry and have
tails when they're wet (an idea seen in the movie 'Splash' 1984). I loved the way these three mermaids had magical powers.
Diana the oldest (and wisest of the three) has this hair clip which can transform into a powerful pitch-fork which can cut through anything. Diana also has super-strength.
Venus has the power to hypnotize men, and seduce them into doing anything she wants. She can also make men lose their memory.
June has this magical mirror which allows her to have visions, i.e. allows her to see things that are happening else where.
There was also one other thing all these mermaids were capable of: making a high pitched scream which can shatter glass. These mermaids refer to humans as "mortals". Their only weakness is that if a "mortal" makes a wish to them, these mermaids would have to grant the wish.
These three mermaids from the start of the film have chosen three different paths in life. Diana has chosen to live in the sea with her father, while Venus and June have both chosen to live on land with humans. Venus works as an "aquatic dancer" in a restaurant and June works as a staff member in an aquarium. So all three have gone separate ways until their father is murdered by an unscrupulous fisherman. All three sisters reunite to bring their father's killer to justice. But their reunion doesn't go smoothly they have a number of disputes with each other but soon learn to resolve them. So to me this film is like a soap opera, comedy and fantasy all combined into one film.
This is a very beautiful and enjoyable film and I very much recommend it!

Nothing too deep, just an excellent piece of lightweight entertainment. Elements of romance, murder, adventure, a few funny moments. Three very different mermaid sisters, one tough and lives mostly underwater, another who lives permanently on land and is looking for her soulmate, the third one divides her time pretty evenly between land and sea and is just looking for some fun. Throw in the murder of their father, a couple of unscrupulous characters and a good looking male lead and you have an entertaining couple of hours of escapism. The end looks like a pilot for a TV series, I really hope it gets picked up. I watch very little television, but I'd watch this if it were a series.
Good plot with supporting sub-Plots.

"Mermaids" is an entertaining fantasy story that explores the interaction of human nature with that of intelligent nature(the mermaids). This was noteworthy to observe the mermaids wanting to explore the experience of being human, yet the mermaids set a better example of what being human should be. The mermaids were compassionate, loving, intelligent beings. Humans still have much to learn. The three main characters'(the mermaids)personalities contrast well being supported by each having a separate, unique talent. Such as, Venus being able to hypnotize men into doing what ever she wanted. The movie has a good storyline, and that's what makes for a good story.

I really liked this movie, I wasn't sure if I would at the beginning but I kept it on the channel and watched it all the way through. It's about 3 mermaid sisters, one of them lives on land, one visits from time to time, and one that hates the land. See these mermaids can get legs when they come ashore, but their fin reshows anytime they get wet. They all three also have special 'powers' so it's kind of like 'Charmed' but with mermaids. The one that hates the land comes ashore because their father has been killed by a fisherman and she wants revenge, but needs her sisters help. I would recommend watching it if you ever see it on and like that sort of thing. =)

I am an elderly man (who still likes cute romantic movies).My only complaint with "Mermaids 2003" is that it has NOT come out on DVD yet so that I can purchase a copy for my 9 yr old gr-dau who also likes mermaid movies. I would approve and promote this this movie to any parent. Its perfect for FAMILY viewing and entertainment. And I agree with a previous comment that it is too bad that this movie never made it to a series production, which only proves a lot of GARBAGE is acceptable over good family themes. OKEY, thats my soapbox of the day, except that I would truly enjoy a sequel!!!

This is an excellent fantasy with an original and fascinating plot.

These sisters have unusual powers that become evident at various stages during the film.
They also have unexpected vulnerabilities that leave them subservient to those who know what words to say and what things to do.
All in all, an excellent and original premise. I eagerly await a sequel.

Brilliant film, love to watch this with friends on a night in. Such a good movie with a good strong story line with lots of development on the characters, you feel as if you know the character in the first twenty minutes and feel as you can relate with sibling rivalry. This movie blows me way every time with moments when you can't believe something has happened to when you get that strange happy feeling. Like nearly everyone has said in the reviews so far, can't believe this has not become a television series. Would recommend this to anyone if they are into mystical and magical movies just like this. One of my favorite movies.

Ian Berry makes it believable! This movie should definitely be made into a series. The actors were sensational. It was easy to believe that Nikita Ager, Erika Heynatz, and Sarah Laine were mermaids. The storyline was easy to follow, but had plenty of twists and turns. This movie did not leave me confused or wondering what happened in some parts. I would classify Mermaids as a family fantasy drama/action. Very small children probably would not like it, but kids, teens, and adults can all sit down and enjoy it. I would recommend Mermaids to anyone who likes fantasy films, dramas, or films that the whole family can watch. After seeing it, you'll want to watch it again and again and again. Mermaids is a sensational movie. I can't say that enough times. The only thing I do not like about it is that it is a made-for-TV movie.

I really loved this film since it was about mermaids. It was nice to see the story of mermaids in a different light. One of the things that these mermaids can do is if you make a wish in front of them they would have to do that wish. One also had the power of a siren and the other two sisters had their own little gadgets that helped them out when they were in a tough spot.
One thing that I thought was cool was that if a person found an object of a mermaid then that mermaid had to do whatever that person says to do. The fact that Venus lost her tiara and a guy found and made her preform in front of everyone at the bar wasn't fair to her. I also think it was cool that each mermaid is given a special gift that is there's.
I think that anyone who likes mermaid movies will love this one.

We watched an excellent movie tonight on Sky. it was called MERMAIDS. it was a TV Movie, which was designed as a Pilot for a series. However the series has not yet been picked up. I wanted to tell you because people on IMDb were saying how it is similar to Charmed..It is about 3 Mermaid sisters. who come to dry land to avenge the death of there merman father who was murdered by a fisherman. Its very funny as one of the sisters has real trouble trying to walk in heals.
Everyone on IMDb were talking about it becoming a series. but it never got picked up. People are saying when Charmed finishes they wished this could have replaced it.

I loved it! It was family friendly. Romance but not sex. I loved how it was about sister's (women) who each had their own ability to bring to the table to help avenge their father. Very positive for girls. The costumes were great! Very hip but very sea-like. Kudos to the designer! The acting was very well done. Even though there were unknowns in the lead roles they were very good actors. Special effects were well done. Scenes were nice. Location was very well thought out. Script was good but hey when they begin the series I know it will get better with time. The concept was great. It did look like a pilot. Me and my family are still waiting for the rest of the series. We need more programing like this!
