It's time to rent a Family Truckster, cue up Lindsey Buckingham's "Holiday Road," and hope our wife doesn't catch us checking out a mysterious hot babe in a sports car -- because it's time to rank all of the films in the "Vacation" franchise. Part family drama, part romantic comedy, part slapstick showcase, and 100 percent a showcase for Chevy Chase to prove why he's Chevy Chase and we're not, National Lampoon's "Vacation" series is home to some of the best bits in American comedy cinema.
Whether they're staying at home for the holidays, pressing their luck in Vegas, traveling cross country, or flying overseas, the Griswolds have set the bar hellishly low for family vacations (which means the only place to go is up for the rest of us). David Mandel isn’t one to sugarcoat. It’s a trait that appears in his work, from the vicious insults of “Veep” to the intentionally reprehensible characters at the center of HBO’s “White House Plumbers.” It also emerged when TheWrap asked the longtime series creator his thoughts on the currently unfolding WGA strike.
“I have no good answer, except to say, I think it’s going to be long and bloody, and it’s going to suck,” Mandel said.

Considering that the disarray in the House of Representatives is, at this point, downright comical, it’s not exactly a shock that actual comedians will want to weigh in on the situation.
Enter David Mandel, who served as a writer, producer and showrunner on HBO’s hit series “Veep.” On Thursday, he shared a letter to Twitter from “Jonah Ryan,” who on the show was an impeached vice president, offering his services as the new House speaker. “The constitution doesn’t actually say that the Speaker must be a member of Congress, so it can be anyone and since Elon Musk has made it clear that he doesn’t want the job, I believe I am the next, logical choice,” the letter reads.
You can read the letter below, which includes “the reasons the J-Man could be speaker” and comparing Nancy Pelosi’s white suit to Deion Saunders:

Sandwiched in-between mega-hits "The Bourne Identity" and "Ocean's Eleven" and their sequels, Matt Damon made an oft-forgotten, highly curious cameo in a teen sex comedy. The 2004 film "EuroTrip" came at the height of the popularity of millennial teen comedies in the early 2000s that included "American Pie" and "Mean Girls." In "EuroTrip," high school angst overcomes Scotty (Scott Mechlowicz) when he is unceremoniously dumped by his girlfriend on the night of their high school graduation, leading him and his best friend Cooper (Jacob Pitts) to Europe in search of his pen pal crush.

One of the most anticipated shows of the year, Marvel’s “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” has had its fair share of ups and downs over the course of its relatively short run. But despite some of the narrative and structural hiccups along the way, there is no doubt I have enjoyed spending this time with Sam (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan). The show has delivered several thrilling action and fight sequences on par with the Marvel films, an intriguing dive into the psyche of a former Hydra assassin and contemplative reflections on what it means to be a Black man in America.
As we head into Friday’s series finale of “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” which will attempt to wrap up the dynamic duo’s current story and close out the narrative involving Karli (Erin Kellyman) and the Flag-Smashers as well as the threat of...

Michael Imperioli could soon be back in the HBO fold.
Variety has learned exclusively that Imperioli has teamed with Alec Berg to develop a scripted series which they will co-write with Imperioli also set to star. The untitled project is described as a meta blend of fact and fiction loosely based on Imperioli’s experiences as a practicing Buddhist.
Both Imperioli and Berg will serve as executive producers in addition to co-writing. Amy Solomon, who runs Berg’s production company, will also serve as an executive producer.
Imperioli is best known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti in the seminal HBO drama “The Sopranos.” He was nominated for five Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes during his time on the series, winning the Emmy for best supporting actor in a drama in 2004. He also wrote five episodes of the series. He can currently be seen in Regina King’s critically-acclaimed feature “One Night in Miami,...

“Midsommar” begins with a traumatic event and ends on a perverse sex scene, capped off by devious, vengeful circumstances at once cathartic and macabre. To that end, it’s a natural extension of the grim cinematic universe that spawned “Hereditary,” writer-director Ari Aster’s disturbing 2018 debut, but this sprawling follow-up has more audacious intentions. It’s the kind of mad science filmmaking worth rooting for: Aster refashions “The Wicker Man” as a perverse breakup movie, douses Swedish mythology in Bergmanesque despair, and sets the epic collage ablaze. He may not land every big swing, but the underlying vision is hard to shake even when it falters.
As with “Hereditary,” Aster has crafted a complex allegory for grief and anger against the backdrop of more symbolic threats. But this time, they’re hiding in plain sight: Perhaps the first bonafide horror movie to take place exclusively in daylight, “Midsommar” unfolds against...

HBO veteran and current “Veep” showrunner David Mandel has signed a new three-year overall deal with the cable network, Variety has learned.
Mandel, who previously wrote, directed and executive produced “Curb Your Enthusiasm” for HBO, will continue to develop and produce TV projects for the cabler after “Veep” comes to an end this season.

At the end of the R-rated teen comedy wave of the early 2000s, DreamWorks released “EuroTrip” without much fanfare or critical acclaim. The film followed a teenager who heads to Europe with a group of his friends to track down his German pen pal, only to get into one sexually-charged, drug-fueled adventure after the other. The movie slowly became a cult classic over the years, thanks in part to an iconic cameo from Matt Damon and a song called “Scotty Doesn’t Know” that went viral in the days long before internet memes.
“Scotty Doesn’t Know,” performed in the movie by Damon’s bald-headed garage band singer, is an incredibly catchy song about how the film’s lead character, Scott Thomas (Scott Mechlowicz), didn’t know that his girlfriend at the time named Fiona was cheating on him frequently with Damon’s character. The song’s lyrics turned it into a cult favorite,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
From “School Ties” to “Live By Night” and this weekend’s “The Great Wall,” Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have each — for better and worse — left a considerable and ever-increasing footprint in the cultural landscape. But while the world is wide enough for both of them, our hearts are not. And so, we forced our panel of critics to choose: Ben Affleck or Matt Damon?

If you're a fan of Matt Damon and Matt Damon-starring movies, then you're most likely also a fan of Matt Damon's cameos. See, Matt Damon is fond of cameos. He may be one of the biggest movie stars in the world -- leading major hits like The Martian and this week's Jason Bourne -- but he's also a master at the bit part, the blink-and-you-miss-him role that often finds itself tucked into the corner of some random movie or TV show, just waiting to surprise you. Our favorite all-time Matt Damon cameo might be the only thing you actually remember about the 2004 teen sex comedy EuroTrip, about a bunch of high school friends who go on a trip to Europe after one of them is dumped by his girlfriend. But it's the scene where poor Scotty is dumped that stands out...

You may or may have not noticed it but HBO's horror options have gotten pretty grim. Not grim as in scary but grim as in incredibly sparse.

In 2009, everyone took notice of Neill Blomkamp's talents when District 9 became the sleeper hit of the summer. Its $210M revenue easily surpassed the film's meager $30M budget. Interest in his next project reached a feverish pitch. That project was the 2013 film Elysium, which starred Matt Damon ("EuroTrip"). It pulled in $286M at the worldwide box office against a budget of $115 million (minus marketing costs). In 2015, we'll get to see his next offering. It will be Chappie, here's the official tagline: "After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot." It stars: Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Sharlto Copley.

With the 2014 FIFA World Cup about to get underway, Digital Spy takes a look at a handful of actors who've made it to the big screen.
1. Pelé (Escape to Victory)
Arguably the greatest footballer of all time, Pelé lined up alongside fellow icons Bobby More and Ossie Ardiles (and a host of Ipswich Town greats!) in this inspiring blend of Great Escape-style war flick and underdog sports story.
A firm Bank Holiday favourite, Escape to Victory also boasts a starting eleven containing Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone. They don't make them like this anymore.
2. Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels)
After retiring from the beautiful game, Wimbledon hardman Vinnie Jones established a second career for himself.

It has been ten years since EuroTrip, riding the raunchy teen comedy revival of the late ’90s and early naughts, burst into theaters and exposed an entire generation of teens to a beach full of dangling male genitalia. And even a decade later, those involved with the cult classic are still proud of it — every sex organ included.
At least, that was the vibe taken away from the audience Wednesday night in Hollywood, where cast members Scott Mechlowicz (“Scotty”), Jacob Pitts (“Cooper”), Michelle Trachtenberg (“Jenny”), Travis Wester (“Jamie”) joined producers Jeff Schaffer, Alec Berg, and David Mandel and several others for a Q&A session.

Time for a special edition of Throwback Thursday!
In honor of "Eurotrip's" 10th anniversary on Thursday (Feb. 20), we rounded up GIFs from the cult classic movie starring some of the biggest names on TV and in movies today. Yeah, it's been 10 years. Commence feeling old now.
Remember that time a tatted up and pierced Matt Damon sang a song about doing Kristin Kreuk behind her boyfriend's back at his own graduation party? Ouch. If Scotty didn't know before, he certainly knows by now:
Seriously, best song ever (unless you were Scotty, then it was probably the worst song you had ever heard in your entire life):
And remember that time Michelle Trachtenberg had to resort to flashing cars to try and get a ride for her and her friends?
And then she unknowingly almost gave all the men on the nude beach a free show, and ended up...

[Here is guest columnist Matthew Eng to remind us of four films we may have forgotten. But they'll be back - Nathaniel R]
Postponements happen every year to a few among the many films on Oscar’s selective radar, to movies whose prospects look both bright and, well, bleak. It very nearly happened to Wolf of Wall Street, but for the skilled hands of Thelma Schoonmaker, who rescued the film from both a rumored four-hour running time and a dreaded Nc-17. In cleaning up its act, though the film is still dirty, Wolf pushed Chris Pine’s Jack Ryan reboot Shadow Recruit out of its prime Christmas release date, but I’d wager that that project’s Oscar chances were already on the slim side. Let’s take a look back (and forward) at the four deferred features that tried to make it in time this year in order to win Oscar’s attention.

I stumbled across this one under the name Demonic on Netflix instant streaming just a few days ago. I was unaware of the more catchy title “Forest of the Damned” until after I had already seen the film. I like “Forest of the Damned” better. It’s makes the film stand out from the nameless masses of one word horror film titles, and classes it up a bit if you ask me.
It’s set in the United Kingdom, and centers around a road trip of an unlikely group. There’s the somewhat awkward but nice guy who just bought the van that’s a stretch from the shaggin’ wagons that have defined vans in horror movies in the past. It’s a Volkswagen, but we are in Europe. They tend to be more fuel efficiency conscience than Americans, so I didn’t think anything of it.

Songs written for film's fictional pop stars typically miss the mark, but Schlesinger has shown it's possible to hit the right note
• More from the Why I Love ... series
You couldn't make Miley Cyrus up; Madonna, Britney and Divine did it for you. Pop music parodies itself all the time, but film finds it tricky. On the surface, film's fictional pop stars are in key with their real-world counterparts: they're shallow and self-centred, often a bit dim, and always image conscious. It's when it comes to the songs that the fiction falls flat. I can't buy Matt Damon as a sneering punk bro in Eurotrip (2004). It's not because of the fake piercings, or his horrible lip-synching, but because the song was written for the film and sounds like it. It gets skate-punk nearly right, so we nearly believe the performance. Nearly enjoy it, too.

The name James Wan has gained an enormous amount of cache in the horror community in the past few years mostly thanks to terrific horror offerings such as 'Insidious' and 'The Conjuring'. So we've all been looking forward to his newly produced genre effort formerly known as 'House of Horror'. It's been months since we've heard anything from the project which has now reportedly moved into post-production and even more importantly has had a title change. 'Demonic' is the new heading to this Wan presented feature from director Will Canon and scribe Max La Bella. The flick stars Maria Bello ('The Dark'), Frank Grillo ('Zero Dark Thirty'), Cody Horn ('End of Watch'), Scott Mechlowicz ('Eurotrip'), Aaron Yoo, Megan Park and Dustin Milligan ('Shark Night'). Hopefully we'll have a release date on this real soon....

Ever since film journalism migrated to online, it's been very tricky for movie fans to walk into the cinema completely spoiler free. Your favourite blockbuster will be dissected from all angles weeks, months and sometimes years before it actually hits cinemas.
However, Hollywood is often still able to maintain some surprises when it comes to secret cameos. Most recently, Bruce Campbell memorably brought back Ash Williams for the Evil Dead remake's post-credits sting and Hugh Jackman turned up in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it X-Men cameo.

It's startling that even Matt Damon -- who very few people would argue against being the definition of an A-list actor -- feels the crunch of the modern day Hollywood studio system.
Case in point: Steven Soderbergh's "Behind the Candelabra," which starred Damon and Michael Douglas in awards friendly roles, was not distributed to U.S. theaters. (It debuted on HBO in May after a bow at the Cannes Film Festival; Damon and Douglas earned Emmy nominations for their work.) Damon is adamant that he chooses his roles based on the director, but one of his frequent collaborators, Soderbergh, is done making movies. Perhaps this is why we're seeing Matt Damon in his first full-on science-fiction movie, "Elysium."
To be fair, it was almost his second: Damon was offered the lead in James Cameron's "Avatar," a role the actor couldn't take due to scheduling issues (he honestly seems...

Sometimes it's pretty fun to live vicariously through the characters we see on the big screen, especially when those characters are young, pretty, spoiled, and living it up in the L.A. party scene, like the privileged socialite wannabes in Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring."
Newcomer Katie Chang stars as Rebecca, the group's ringleader/chief sociopath who's obsessed with Lindsay Lohan. Israel Broussard ("Flipped") is her doting, anxiety-ridden Bff Marc, while Emma Watson ("Harry Potter"), Taissa Farmiga ("American Horror Story") and Claire Julien round out the posse.
The pretty young things embark on a series of incredibly brazen home robberies. They target celebs whose closets they want to raid, including Paris Hilton, Rachel Bilson, Audrina Patridge and Megan Fox, and use online gossip rags to figure out who's going to be out of town, and when.
The most remarkable thing about this stylized tale is that it's based on a true story.

Oh. Ohhh. That type of tripping. The one with hallucinogenic drugs. Okay, got it. Yeah, that type of tripping is funny, too. And hey, that's in a bunch of movies as well! Like, say, this week's "This is the End." Or so we hear.

After playing a string of outlandish badasses like the intimidating thug Big Chris in Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, a gonzo soccer hooligan in the zany comedy Eurotrip, and the unstoppable Juggernaut in X-Men: The Last Stand, British footballer-turned-leading man Vinnie Jones has been turning to more earnest drama of late. In January, he signed on to co-star in the World War I film The 34th Battalion, and now he's lined up for a gritty thriller called The Killer's List. Deadline reports The Killer's List has Jones attached to play a widower and retired hitman whose forced to return to his killer craft once son is kidnapped. The script by Brian Vining kicks off with Jones' character receiving a cardboard box that contains a cell phone, demands that he murder five of his former associates, and the fingers of his young son. In a transparent attempt to piggyback on a major news event and use it as an excuse to talk about films, here are some of our favourite cinematic popes
Following news that Benedict XVI is to be the first pope to resign in 600 years, we introduce the only important matter for debate: what are the best on-screen portrayals of pontiffs? Here are a few of our favourites, including nominations from @guardianfilm Twitter followers @Lazslokovacs, @farah0912, @nigelfloyd, @pafster, @DulachG, @filipequintans and @FPSFilm.
1. Robbie Coltrane in The Pope Must Die
The film might not have been a classic, but Robbie Coltrane is certainly one of the most memorable movie popes.

2. Rex Harrison in The Agony and the Ecstasy
Rex Harrison is a remarkably shouty Pope Julius II, butting heads over the painting of the Sistine chapel with an even shoutier Michelangelo in Charlton Heston.

'Magic Mike' and 'End of Watch' hottie Cody Horn (below) is the latest to join the cast of the new James Wan produced haunted house thriller. Still without an official title but what we'll continue to refer to as 'House of Horror' for the time being the project is due to commence shooting in Baton Rouge, La this week. Hopefully that'll also mean that a final decision on the title will be happening soon. Horn, who is set to play a ghost hunter in the flick, will be joining the already cast Frank Grillo ('Zero Dark Thirty'), Maria Bello ('The Dark') and Scott Mechlowicz ('Eurotrip')....

*1/31- Updated with additional casting news* We’ve been talking about James Wan’s House of Horror since early 2011, but the movie is nearly ready to begin filming. Maria Bello has been the only confirmed cast member, but a new report reveals two more actors that have joined the project.
According to Variety, Frank Grillo (pictured below) will star alongside Maria Bello in the now-untitled horror movie. Grillo was recently cast as Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and has dozens of movie and TV credits, including Zero Dark Thirty, The Grey, and Mother’s Day (2010). The cameo appearance has been an integral part of cinema for many decades now, cropping up in many different guises.
Some pull you out of the film instantly (one painful example is ‘Bruce Willis’ in Ocean’s Twelve) – others riff on earlier, iconic straight roles for comedic effort (John Hurt in Spaceballs, Robert Patrick in Wayne’s World). A cameo can present the director with an opportunity to work with a hero (Stan Lee in Mallrats, Peter Jackson in Hot Fuzz) or a chance to immortalise themselves on film (Hitchcock, Scorsese, Tarantino). Some are a free-for-all, ‘bring yer mates’ love-in (The Expendables and most of the ‘frat pack’ films) while others are occasionally downright bizarre (a skinhead Matt Damon in Eurotrip).
The list of cameos below represent a different approach, avoiding the sometimes gimmicky nature of the function, and offering moments of brilliance which enhance and enrich the quality of the films themselves.

When it’s least expected, cameo appearances within comedy movies can become show-stealing moments. It can also be the scene you remember most even if the cameos aren’t key to the film. The majority of cameos are non-credited because of the short screen time or simply because the actors are just too famous to even be credited. Nonetheless, the following film cameos are the most memorable due to the actors and writers’ impeccable timing and the genuine surprise the audience receives. In preparation for the Flash Gordon cameo in the upcoming comedy film Ted, we look at the top ten comedy movie cameos and their one-off moments of hilarity.
Flash Gordon (Ted)

"District 9" director Neill Blomkamp didn't want Matt Damon to star in his follow-up film, "Elysium." As Damon recalled, Blomkamp -- a South African native -- doesn't like the "Hollywood people." Yet, after meeting with the star, the director was apparently charmed. Which isn't surprising, considering that Matt Damon has made it look easy for an extremely famous person to appear accessible, be it showing up as a pierced rock singer in "EuroTrip" or the viral sensation of "I'm f-cking Matt Damon." Damon has made a career of poking fun at his own image -- something that actor discusses here at length.
"Elysium" -- scheduled for release next March and teased here at Comic Con -- is the much anticipated second film from Blomkamp, following his 2009 breakout, the aforementioned "District 9." The plot of the film has remained a mystery, but -- as Damon explains -- it centers on a space station called Elysium,...

This jaunt into the Ukraine badlands from the Paranormal Activity people gets boring after a creepy start
Oren Peli, creator of Paranormal Activity, has produced this chiller about Americans abroad: it has a hint of Eli Roth's Hostel and indeed Jeff Schaffer's comedy EuroTrip. Some American college backpackers chance across an ex-army guy in Ukraine who is running "extreme tours": he will smuggle them into Prypiat, the eerie ghost town in the shadow of the Chernobyl power plant. There is some very good and creepy docu-realist location work when everyone first shows up there (it was in fact shot in Hungary and Serbia), and they start to suspect that the town may not be entirely deserted. But as sinister presences emerge from the shadows, it gets dull. There is a scary and surreal appearance by a bear.

HeyUGuys is proud to unveil the first episode of No, Seriously It’S Awesome, the world’s most startlingly unique and exciting film podcast.
And by that we mean it’s semi-original and mildly entertaining.
Look, there are plenty of movie podcasts out there, most of them are just two nerds talking about what was out last week. There’s nothing wrong with that, but everyone is talking about the Avengers already. We don’t need another voice telling us how great the Avengers is.
No, Seriously It’s Awesome is about something different. Each episode, your esteemed host Wil Jones will get a special guest to pick a film that they love that either a) everyone else hates, or b) no one else has even heard of, and then discuss the potential merits of said film. It’s about celebrating the unloved children of pop culture, the weird bastard...

I find it hard to fathom, but perhaps Sacha Baron Cohen doesn’t realize that he’s not a movie pratfall artist: he’s a cultural critic. The thing that he is really really good at -- as Borat and Bruno and Ali G. demonstrate -- is not so much in being funny himself but in getting other, actual, non-Hollywood people to reveal their biases and prejudices, and in the process revealing the underlying idiocies that fuel Western society. As such, a sheltered, coddled Middle Eastern dictator character who cannot easily go among ordinary Westerners -- and elicit their unguarded commentary on life, the universe, and everything -- is perhaps not the best avenue for his brand of, what had been, at least up till now, bitter, brilliant, observant satire. For The Dictator is a stunning failure, certainly compared to Borat and Bruno. There’s a moment at the very end of the film,...
