Too often, filmmakers forget that less can be more. Luckily, the creative forces behind Rust Creek, a new thriller hitting theaters, they know this. Within the first ten minutes, the action and story are already set into motion. Independent cinema like this is always preferable to overly pretentious fare. This flick just wants to tell a lean, mean, and razor sharp story. Without question, they do. This is a really solid film that only pauses to breathe once a breath needs to be taken. It suggests a real strong future for the filmmakers and especially for its star, who is a real find. As mentioned above, the movie gets down to it rather quickly. Sawyer Scott (Hermione Corfield) is a college student with a plum job interview scheduled in Washington D.C. in a few days. En route, she winds up getting horribly lost in the maze-like Kentucky forest. One...

What seemed charmingly provocative onstage falls thuddingly flat in the film adaptation of Stephen Karam’s 2007 acclaimed off-Broadway play Speech & Debate. The playwright, who’s since gone on to win a Tony Award for The Humans, has here adapted his own work for the screen. But his cinematic inexperience, and the tonally awkward direction by Dan Harris (Imaginary Heroes), reduces the work to the level of a risqué Afterschool Special. The film’s stage origins, and a cameo appearance by Lin-Manuel Miranda, may be of interest to theater buffs, but everyone else will be left wondering what all the fuss was...

Sam Kretchmar's debut feature Keep in Touch concerns a recently released ex-con who embarks on a new relationship forged on deceit. Featuring a terrific performance by Ryan Patrick Bachand — underplaying to superb effect in the central role — the pic offers enough quirkily interesting, offbeat moments to sustain interest despite its familiar-feeling aspects.
Bachand, whose only previous big-screen credit is 2004's Imaginary Heroes, plays Colin, newly freed after serving a prison sentence for a near-fatal hit-and-run accident. Returning to his small Connecticut hometown, he takes a job working at a tree nursery owned by his boorish, foul-mouthed cousin...

From Dumb & Dumber and The Martian, through to Arachnophobia and Steve Jobs - we salute the screen work of Jeff Daniels...
They say that when you play the Game of Thrones, “you win or you die”. The Game of Jeff Daniels, however, is an undeniably different beast and for the most part is a definite “you win or you win”. After viewing dozens of Jeff Daniels movies and spending many, many hours with his on-screen personas, it’s fair to say that the maxim has been sorely tested but guess what? It still holds true. This list has been carefully curated to celebrate the veteran actor’s talent, versatility and wit and no matter which (if any) of these movies you decide to revisit or check out for the first time, Jeff is guaranteed to give you something to love in each and every one.

New York I Love You: Berman & Pulcini’s Schmaltz Soaked Latest
Nostalgia, especially in large doses, tends to hobble the authenticity of a text, whether in the literary or cinematic realm. On a superficial level, serving as a love letter to a bygone era of 1980s New York, Eleanor Hendricks’ novel Ten Thousand Saints falls under the quirky spigot of directing duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the team behind the Oscar nominated American Splendor from 2003. In the decade since that critically championed title, they’ve continued with a particular strain of fluffy cornball items. Following a brief assay into studio filmmaking with The Nanny Diaries (2007), they were responsible for a pair of sickly sweet titles headlined by prized performers like Kevin Kline in The Extra Man (2010) and Kristen Wiig in Girl Most Likely (2012). Though their latest venture is slightly more sobering, at least in a notable absence of...

[1] It's a time-honored tradition at the start of any year for everyone to declare that this will be the year they finally get around to all of those things they've always meant to get around to at some point. Not all of these vows end in success, of course -- in fact, it's right around this point in January that it becomes apparent that some resolutions just aren't meant to be -- but Disney, so far, seems to be off to a great start. In the first two weeks of the year, the studio's already assigned [2] directors [3] to Maleficent and its Matterhorn movie, which have been bouncing around since 2010 and 2011 respectively, and has set [4] Rob Marshall to bring Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods to the big screen. Now Disney's pushing ahead with another project that's been lingering on the backburner for a while, the sci-fi adventure flick Hovercar, as...

Directed by: Kieran Mulroney
Starring: Jeff Daniels, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds
Rating: R
Release Date: April 23, 2010 (Limited)
Trailer Score: 6/10
My Thoughts: Trailers aren’t always the best indication of a film’s merit. Usually they just highlight its marketability. That’s what I’m hoping is the case on this one. Judging from the trailer, the film seems a little unfocused on its protagonist, which can be a real problem. Is he just immature? Or is he mentally ill? Because, and it may sound harsh, Daniels has the makings of a crazy man in this one. And I’m just going to throw this out there, Ryan Reynolds, I don’t care how hot you are, the bleach blond look is not working for you. The trailer’s full of minor distractions, but the emotional sincerity of it seems to be there in full force. I’m always...

Not only are they capable of lighting up the silver screen, they are also some of today's most talented young actresses, commanding huge fees - in some cases, in the millions. Many have won multiple awards, while others have starred in some of today's biggest box office hits. In short, we're listing down the cream of the crop!
Just like our recent Top 50 hottest young actors, we've narrowed down our list from 88 to 50, and set an age limit. If you miss seeing some of your favorites, so do we - including Maggie Gyllenhaal (31 years old) and Amy Adams (34 years old). Definitely some of the names you'll see on the list are emerging talents - the ones you will see getting the big roles in the near future - and some of them already have, with awards and nominations to boot.

So you know that Dante's Inferno video game that EA is producing? We showed you the trailer for the game about a month ago. Well, Universal has finally hired screenwriter Dan Harris to work on a screenplay or their live-action adaptation. Harris' past credits include Urban Chaos Theory, X-Men 2, Imaginary Heroes, Superman Returns, and Until Death most recently. We don't know much about the plot besides the very basics because, well, the game doesn't hit shelves until early 2010. So that's about all we know, but I guess it's good they have a solid screenwriter with some experience assigned to this. A lot of people are using Superman Returns in their headline for this news, but I chose X-Men 2. Why? Because that gives a bit more clout to Harris, as opposed to Superman Returns, which is a film a lot of people think Bryan Singer screwed up. Plus, on ...

X2 and Superman Returns co-writer Dan Harris has signed on to pen the screenplay for Universal Pictures’ Dante’s Inferno, a live-action film based on the upcoming Electronic Arts videogame. The game, which is expected to launch late next year, involves a journey through the depths of hell. The game is based on the canticle of the same name from Dante Aligheri's epic poem The Divine Comedy. Strike Entertainment's Mark Abraham and Eric Newman are producing with EA Entertainment. EA’s Patrick O'Brien and game creator Jonathan Knight are also involved in the development of the film. Universal acquired the title in the fall in a four-studio bidding battle before the EA game even had a formal title. Universal is also developing a live-action version of the EA game Army of Two, with Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) writing the script for producer Scott Stuber. Harris’ other credits include Until Death,...

Can anyone catch up to this cool cat? With Shia Labeouf's Eagle Eye taking the top spot at the box-office this weekend it makes four-in-a-row for the actor (not counting the animated Surf's Up) and it made me wonder if the 22-year-old is our next big time actor or if it's just a case of him starring in the right film at the right time that has made his films so popular leaving the title of "The Next Big Thing" up for grabs. Let's face it, Transformers and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were going to make big bucks no matter what, Shia had very little, if anything, to do with their success. One could make the argument that Disturbia opened during a very weak time in 2007 and that accounts for its three week box-office domination with rather modest numbers, winning that third weekend with barely over $9 million.

I loved that this film recognizes the intelligence of the viewer, allowing the layers to peel from the characters through their interactions with each other about the unspoken loss that has so affected each of them. - - - - - - With such praise for an indie movie, what can you do but get interested, right? Well, I did and to a certain extent I think some other people are also interested. The only problem is that it's already been released and the only way for you to watch it now is on DVD. But is it really worth it? I definitely think so. For starters, the lead is no other than the awesome young actor Ryan Donowho, with whom I just did an interview (http://themovie-fanatic.com/exclusive_articles/interviews/ryan_donowho_interview/).
