Poor Jaak Pijpen
Chip_douglas30 October 2005
When Gert Verhulst was merely an underpaid BRT television presenter (as opposed to the multi millionaire media mogul he is today), he developed and hosted this simple but effective celebrity word game. You know, the kind of game normally confined to radio. A panel of BRT personalities attempted to fill a whole minute talking about a given topic without pausing, stuttering or being caught saying the dreaded 'Euh'. To complicate matters further they were burdened with an extra 'forbidden' word or phrase with every new topic. All the topics taken together were supposed to hold clues to whom the celebrity guests where (one for each of the first two rounds) and during round three, the two guests would try to beat each other to the Euh, while the regular team would make bets on the outcome. At the end the panel member (never one of the guests) with the most points got to hold on to an enormous trophy for the duration of the end credits

Now at that time it seemed like there were only about 14 people working for the two BRT channels, all of whom used to pop up on every single show. Therefore it was not unusual to see Gert Verhulst the anchorman introducing Gert Verhulst the game show host. Likewise, the panel consisted of some of the most overexposed faces in Flemish-speaking Belgium: talk-show host/singer Margriet, opera singer/children's performer Koen Crucke, sportscaster Jaak Pijpen and all round know-it-all Emiel Goelen. Jaak Pijpen always lost. This man was unable to speak more than two words without uttering the sound of Euh. Poor Jaak Pijpen. Worse still, all the others would fall of their seats laughing each time he Euh'd (especially that camp Crucke). Poor, poor Jaak Pijpen. So out of place. Yet he kept returning week after week. He never gave up and kept on Euhing! Good old Jaak.

After a while Gertje took his singing stuffed dog Samson on the road and left for the commercial VRT channel. Some new guy took over as host and Euh was never the same. Around the same time the BRT decided to rename it's two channels "Een" (one) and "Ketnet/Canvas". This is still being discussed by brainy persons all over Europe, for what is the point of a channel called 'One' when there is no longer a 'Two', while the remaining channel has been split in twine: Ketnet during the afternoon, Canvas at night. At least Gertje did well for himself: he created some more catchy children's shows, who in turn made records and movies and had theater tours. Then he started managing a girl band and left his wife for one of the three singers. He also opened his own amusement park: Plopsaland. Unfortunately, there is no attraction devoted to "Zeg eens Euh!". Poor Jaak Pijpen.

That's 7 Euhs in 60 seconds
