D.I. Jack Kerry is on holiday, from Scotland Yard, when his private eye father is dies, hit by the golf ball of Rupert Delaney. Kerry's father had previously jotted down a car registration number which he discovers is owned by Delaney.
Kerry discovers that Charles Bannister, on the orders of Mel Harris, turned up at Rupert Delaney's home and was told to him Bob Kerry would be at the golf club. Mrs Lincoln's nephew visits Kerry and wants the dog collar returned.
Kerry receives a letter, posted by Delaney before he was murdered, linking his father's murder to a stolen dog collar. The Bannister's, who found the collar, contradict their story. Carol White contacts Kerry asking for help.
