Only her second feature as a director (see "Xtreme Desires" for her debut) former actress Tanya Hyde goes the art house route with "Twisted Dreams", using a style not as successful as her later brilliance for Britain's Harmony Films. So this effort for Private's Pirate fetish subsidiary is okay to look at but not arousing.
Using lots of black-and-white and stop-motion photography, Hyde intentionally distances the viewer, perhaps in quest of "underground" or avant-garde status. The six stand-alone vignettes vary in quality, but at no time did I become engrossed as is generally the case with her later classic work.
Some familiar faces like Tony DeSergio and Sophie Evans figure prominently, but generally it is the fetish-gear that catches one's eye. Hyde's soon to become familiar tropes of gas masks, latex, caps (chauffeur style rather than military this time), dark glasses, corsets, fishnet stockings, high-heel boots and the like are everywhere, plus of course a measure of nun's modified habits. I don't know if Tanya was brought up Catholic, but she certainly seems fixated on sacrilege as a side issue.
One sequence set in the bottom of an empty swimming pool was intriguing, with a wheel-chaired guy involved rather passively in the sex. Evans stars in "Abused Maid" her abuser being a lesbian mistress. "Chauffeurs" concerns what I would have called "chauffeuses", involving sex in a classic early '50s Buick.
Finale "Slave Boy Training" is likely the most adventurous vignette, actually surprising me when actor Tony DeSergio, early in his career, takes a large strap-on-dildo in his posterior from the leading lady Monique Covet- training indeed.
The stop-motion photography/editing was most annoying - didn't work at all in a porn context and best reserved for animators like the great Ray Harryhausen. Hyde was obviously experimenting in a new medium, and potential fans are advised to eschew her Private/Pirate videos and watch the spectacular Harmony ones instead.
