The voice of a Brazilian angel
dino_libra19 January 2007
This documentary is absolutely brilliant! But first, about Milton Nascimento. Who is he? Milton was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His biological mother was a poor black maid, named Maria do Carmo Nascimento. When he was only a few months old, he was adopted by a white family for whom his mother had previously worked: the couple Josino Brito Campos (a banker, mathematics teacher and electronic technician) and Lília Silva Campos (a music teacher that studied the piano with the famous Heitor Villa Lobos.). He lived in the boroughs of Laranjeiras and Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. When he was 18 months old, his biological mother died and he moved with his adoptive parents to the city of Três Pontas, in the State of Minas Gerais.

At a very young age, his musicality was noticed by his adoptive mother. When she played the piano, Milton always tried to dance, even though he couldn't even walk.

When he was about 11 years old he could play a harmonica and an accordion while he was singing the missing notes on the accordion, all at the same time! Later on in live, during his teens he learned how to play the guitar and piano. And he also managed to learn how to play a double bass flawlessly in just one night! Read the Book Travessia, the life of Milton Nascimento, if you want to know more about this.

About the documentary. There are so many beautiful moments on this DVD, that I don't know where to start.

There are many guest appearances (about 20), but there could also have been 100 guest appearances (Milton has worked with Peter Gabriel, Duran Duran, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Naná Vasconcelos, James Taylor, Gal Costa, Paul Simon, etc.) The best moment I think, is the song "Cais". Milton demonstrates why Elis Regina once said: If God had a voice, he would sing like Milton Nascimento. Also the moments with his old friends from Clube da Esquina are classic.

Although Milton was suffering an acute rare case of diabetes during the making of this documentary, he still was able to deliver great performances. Remember this guy is already in his sixties.

This documentary has everything, history lessons, music, jokes, drama (stories about the Brazilian military dictatorship), emotion and love.

If you know Milton, you probably already have this piece of diamond in your safe and if you want to get to know this genius, you should buy it know!
