Setsuko Hara and her sister Kazuko Enami have a difficult situation at home. Their father keeps trying for the big deal and never succeeds, and takes it out on their stepmother, Yôko Mizumachi. Finally, they move the older woman into her own apartment and try to earn more money. Miss Mizumachi gets a job in the typist pool at the auto agency Miss Hara works at, and Miss Hara decides to become a saleswoman.
