Watching Santastein as part of this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival felt like unwrapping a Christmas gift extra early this past summer, so I'm especially excited that Manuel Camilion and Benjamin Edelman's new holiday horror film is coming to Screambox on December 19th as part of their streaming lineup this month!
Below, you can check out the previous Santastein trailer and details on Screambox's December streaming lineup (which also includes Rare Exports), and in case you missed it, feel free to read my Popcorn Frights review of Santastein, which brings Santa Claus back to life with a blood-splattered vengeance!
Santastein synopsis: Max was only six years old when he accidentally burned Santa to a crisp on Christmas Eve. 12 years later, Max attempts to raise Santa from the dead in order to fix his past mistakes and restore the Christmas spirit. But he soon realizes that the creature he has...

Ho-ho-hold up, horror fans! Before you start decking the halls, let’s take a moment to unwrap a cinematic gift that we all too hastily tossed aside: Black X-mas (2006).
Yes, you read that right. We’re taking a sleigh ride back to this notorious holiday horror remake, and guess what? It’s not the lump of coal we once thought it was. So, grab your eggnog, and let’s jingle all the way through this misunderstood mistletoe menace.
A Holiday Horror Slasher That Turns Up The Chills
Okay, first things first: what exactly happens in Black X-mas? (Also called Black Christmas by anyone who didn’t immediately buy the DVD) The film, a remake of the 1974 classic, takes us through a snow-covered journey of terror. Amidst the backdrop of a snow-laden college campus, a sorority house, decked with garlands and lights, becomes the stage for a terrifying yuletide nightmare.

If it's one thing all horror fans understand, it's that every month is a good month for watching scary movies. Sure, we often like to ramp up the on-screen scares come October, but the frights still continue throughout the rest of the year. And while the holiday season brings with it a lot to celebrate and be thankful for, there's also quite a lot that still goes bump in the night.
In honor of the various terrors that occur every December — i.e. every single trip you will take to a shopping mall in the coming weeks — here is a list of the best horror movies available to stream this month. Consider it your holiday gift guide for movies you can watch after the family has gone home and you are left to piece your sanity back together. The holidays may only come around once a year, but terror lasts forever.

"Halloween" might be the first modern slasher film, but Bob Clark's "Black Christmas" laid the groundwork for John Carpenter's similarly holiday-themed horror movie. Debuting in 1974, four years before the independent smash hit that became "Halloween" in 1978, "Black Christmas" might seem quaint compared to the bloody future of slashers that would arrive less than a decade later. The film's minimalism is arguably one of the film's strengths, though, as Clark relies more on the eerie quietness of a college campus during holiday break rather than blood and gore.
Clark's filmography is remarkably diverse in terms of genre and includes horror and thriller material like "Black Christmas" and "Murder by Decree" to comedies like the raunchy "Porky's" and the much lighter and more wholesome celebration of the holidays "A Christmas Story." The Canadian director's willingness to work on different types of films probably contributed to his desire to limit the...

It's 1974. Canada and the United States are challenging old ideas about women's bodily autonomy, a year removed from the Supreme Court's landmark Roe V. Wade decision legalizing abortion. Chaka Khan croons for her lover to "Tell Me Something Good" over the radio airwaves as Isabel Perón is sworn in as Argentina's first female president, weeks before Richard Nixon would resign from his presidential post amid the Watergate scandal. It's a time of shake-ups and seismic cultural shifts, reflected in the films people would flock to. Roman Polanski's "Chinatown" and Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Conversation" would tap into distrust of governments and institutions, and in horror, Tobe Hooper would disrupt the genre formula with his grim and influential screamfest "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." Bob Clark's "Black Christmas" would be one of the first horror movies to center around a holiday both in title and plot, but...

There’s not a horror fan out there that doesn’t like slasher movies. It all started with Black Christmas in 1974 and then the Eighties came and suddenly the horror subgenre was huge. Since then there have been countless others and it’s perhaps the subgenre that first-time horror directors on a small budget go for. Which is exactly what Martin Renner, director of Buzz Cut has done.
There are a few things that you need to get right when making a slasher film and the most important, that almost everyone will agree on, are the death scenes. Get them right and almost everything else can be forgiven by your average horror fan. So I’m very glad to say that Buzz Cut does get it right! The death scenes...

Creating new ways to look at horror movies both beloved and lesser-known has been artist "Ghoulish" Gary Pullin's specialty for over ten years via awe-inspiring posters, and he brings that same innovative and nostalgic style to his artwork for the vinyl scores of fright flicks. "For more than ten years artist Gary Pullin has been taking art galleries, movie theater walls, and social media by storm with his fresh, inventive takes on film, music, and television properties. While we may already be a few months past the Christmas season, that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of gifts to unwrap in the recent book Yuletide Terror: Christmas Horror on Film and Television, which features essays and interviews from an authoritative collective of writers who dig deep into everything we love about festive frights and seasonal scares. There are definitely several expected titles featured in Yuletide Terror, like Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night, but there are quite a few surprising topics that are included here as well that I really enjoyed because I knew little to nothing about them, resulting in a reading experience that was highly enjoyable and informative to boot.

Christmas horror is one of my favourite sub genres. It of course includes such classics as Gremlins, Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night and Krampus. Jason from Mnpp here with this week's post-Globes edition of "Beauty vs Beast." And let's just get this out of the way right up front: Frances McDormand is, in the wise parlance of Groundhog Day, if not The God, A God. Every second she's on screen at any awards show ever is a gift - for the lovers, the memers, and me. I'm one of the ones who kind of can't with Three Billboards (although I fall more in the middle than most) and I don't even think Franny's doing anything near her best work in it, but trot her out in a stately pilgrim sack and have her scowl at the camera-man and my heart sings. I'll just pretend they're still giving her awards for Olive Kitteredge (while pouring one out for Sally Hawkins).
All of that is to say that if we're going to do Three Billboards for...

Several years before John Carpenter struck gold with his low budget marvel Halloween, Canadian journeyman Bob Clark created the template for what would become known as the slasher film with 1974's Black Christmas. This horror film was among the first to follow the now familiar pattern of the slasher genre that went on to dominate early '80s horror cinema. Black Christmas utilized the unseen killer knocking off nubile coeds in their sorority house one at a time in search of vengeance for some unknown slight committed against him. Director Clark, who would go on to even greater acclaim as the director of one of the most famous Christmas films of all time, A Christmas Story, created what has become one of the most iconic films...

Secret Santa is a new horror comedy from writer and director Mike McMurran, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Sunday 28th January. I got chance to ask Mike a few questions about why he chose to write a Christmas horror, his favorite scene and getting the film made on a small budget.
What can we expect from Secret Santa?
You can expect to have a fun ride! We really wanted to capture the nostalgia of the late 70’s and early 80’s slasher films but also put our own personal touch on the film. You can expect some great kills thanks to our SFX artist Carlos Henriques from The Butcher Shop. The movie is funny as well. Happy Horrordays, Boils and Ghouls! ‘Tis the season to be…murdered, perhaps? Okay, I’ll stop with The Cryptkeeper puns because: A) I’m terrible at them, and B) see A. But it is the season when we focus on blood dripping from the tinsel-laden tree, and there are more than enough solid to great Xmas goodies to help cope with a visit from that racist aunt who’s pleasantly surprised Idris Elba speaks so eloquently. (Don’t pretend you don’t have one.) Mining the Vault of Horror comics, HBO’s Tales from the Crypt delivered their holiday cheer in Season One’s second episode, And All Through the House. If you’re looking to get the kiddies into horror but they still have an affinity for Old Saint Nick, this is not the place to start.

No the Lord of Cinematic Hollies Jollies is Mr. Bob Clark, who gave us the ever-festive duo of 1983's A Christmas Story in 1974's Black Christmas. Nostalgia & Homicide - spells Xmas to me.
So this week to celebrate we'll be facing down two representational totems, one from each film - from A Christmas Story we have the infamous Sexy Leg Lamp that Ralphie's Dad buys (and that Ralphie's Mom destroys). And from Black Christmas comes the Crystal Unicorn that is used to murder the film's greatest character, drunken and acid-tongued...

With Christmas just around the corner it is time to get into a festive mood and there is nothing better to start the season than a Christmas Slasher. Craig Anderson has got into the spirit of Christmas past with a colourful homage to the classic 80’s slasher in his latest release Red Christmas. I got a chance to ask him a few questions about why he chose to write and direct a Christmas Horror, dealing with the taboo subject of abortion and working with Dee Wallace. And if you haven’t read it yet, check out my Red Christmas review
What can we expect from your new film Red Christmas?
The incredible actor Dee Wallace – Et (1982), Cujo (1983), The Howling (1981); stars as a mother who brings her grown up family home for Christmas. It’s a normal Christmas day with plenty of family stress, but then a really weird dude rocks up the door.

The spirit of Christmas is alive and well at The Hi-Pointe Theater here in St. Louis. It”S A Wonderful Life played last weekend to a nearly-sold out crowd – and that’s a big theater!
This Saturday, December 16th at 10:00am, head over to the Hi-Pointe for a White Christmas
White Christmas was made in 1954 (exactly 20 years before Black Christmas!) and was directed by Michael Curtiz. Bing Crosby teamed up with madcap funny man Danny Kaye and partnering with those two show biz pros as sisters were Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. One of the most popular films of 1954, White Christmas opens and closes with the title song, while in between it’s filled with one great musical number after another. Blessed are the Children is new thriller from co-writer and director Chris Moore, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask Chris a few questions about his inspirations for making the film, his influences and what makes Blessed are the Children stand out in the horror genre.
What can we expect from the film?
I think you can expect a slasher film that’s fun, has something to say, and characters you actually care about. It’s one of the most important things in a horror film, but a lot of people seem fine with just throwing in a gaggle of busty 20-somethings and calling it a day. I want you to actually feel something when these people are terrorized. I never want you rooting for the killers. I usually come up with a story or concept first...

Featured in Heather Wixson's holiday gift guide, the new book Yuletide Terror: Christmas Horror on Film and Television could be the perfect stocking stuffer for the horror fan in your life this holiday season, but Spectacular Optical is giving you the chance to take your gift one step further with their interactive book tour this December that includes screenings, lectures, and other live celebrations tied to the book's seasonal themes:
Press Release: For many, Christmas is an annual celebration of goodwill and joy, but for others, it’s a time to curl up on the couch in the dead of winter for a good old-fashioned fright. The festive holiday season has always included a more somber side, and scary tales of child-stealing demons to ghost stories told ‘round the fireplace go back to pre-Christian celebrations. Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

A Christmas Story (1983) is screening at 7:00pm Thursday December 21st at Schlafly Bottleworks – 7260 Southwest Ave St Louis, Mo 63143. Doors open at 6:30pm. The screening is sponsored by Karl & Beckie Heinz and will be introduced by We Are Movie Geek’s own Tom Stockman!
I used an air rifle I got one Christmas growing up, but I never had a mail-in decoder ring which required me to consume mass quantities of Ovaltine, I never ran into bullies with yellow eyes, and I never took a dare to stick my tongue to an aluminum pole in the middle of winter.

“There’s a sad sick story” behind all the objects Rolo Haynes (Douglas Hodge, “The Night Manager,” “Catastrophe”) has on display inside his roadside Black Museum — and in an upcoming installment of the new season of “Black Mirror,” you’ll get told about three of them, with pain, teddy bears, and weird technology featuring heavily into the action.
Similar in approach to the Christmas special “Black Christmas,” the anthology-within-an-anthology “Black Museum” features a cast including Hodge, Letitia Wright (“Ready Player One,” “Black Panther”), Babs Olusanmokun (“Roots,” “The Defenders”), and the newly announced Aldis Hodge, memorable from his work on American TV shows like “Underground” and TNT’s “Leverage.”
The trailer is being released as part of Netflix’s “13 Days of ‘Black Mirror'” series, which means every day until Dec. 6, you can expect new surprises from the upcoming Season 4. So far, we’ve gotten early looks at the mother-daughter drama “Arkangel,...

We may only have several home entertainment releases for this Tuesday, but as the saying goes, “quality over quantity,” because this bunch of Blu-rays and DVDs are a stellar lot of films. One of my favorite horror films of 2017, Mark Duplass’ Creep 2, makes its way home on November 28th courtesy of The Orchard, and Scream Factory has given Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery the Collector’s Edition treatment (and deservedly so).
For you cult film fans, both Death Laid an Egg and Deathdream (aka Dead of Night) get the HD treatment this week, and other notable releases this Tuesday include M.F.A., Rememory, Super Dark Times, Woodshock, and Trailer Trauma 4: Television Trauma.

The late, great Bob Clark will forever be synonymous with the holiday season thanks to his films Black Christmas and A Christmas Story, but before he brought those stories to life on screen, he gave horror fans the gift of Deathdream, aka Dead of Night (read our own Scott Drebit's Drive-In Dust Offs article on the film here). Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.
Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.
Blood Rage (1987, dir. Bruce Rubin) There are slasher movies that are tense and scary and stylish. Blood Rage is not one of them. Shot in 1983 but not released...

In 1946, the sleepy Texas town of Texarkana was rocked by a string of eight violent assaults, five of them resulting in murder. These crimes were later dubbed the Texarkana Moonlight Murders, named after the late-night timing of the attacks, and the unknown perpetrator become known as the “Phantom Killer.” It was truly a horrific crime and it’s no surprise that it’s one that would attract exploitation filmmakers. Filmmakers like Texarkana resident Charles B. Pierce.
Charles B. Pierce was, in every way, a product of gonzo drive-in exploitation. In the early ’70s, he rocked the grindhouse world with The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972), an absurd docudrama about a killer Sasquatch tormenting a sleepy village in Arkansas. It was his first true hit, successful enough to spawn a wave of Sasquatch-ploitation (another topic for another time), and kick-start his career. He’d go on to make a few more films in the years that followed,...

*before going into the review, let’s get the obvious out of the way: we at Age of the Nerd would like to take a moment to say we are fully aware of Victor Salva’s criminal history and the moral dilemma that is presented when discussing or financially supporting his movies.
The horror landscape has changed rather drastically in the sixteen years since controversy magnet Victor Salva first introduced slasher-starved audiences to “the Creeper” (Jonathan Breck) and his taste for body parts in the ‘Jeepers Creepers‘ franchise. Since then, there’s been the rise of the torture porn sub-genre and filmmakers like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie, the supernatural found footage genre, an obnoxious onslaught of inferior remakes (fingers shall be pointed specifically at The Wicker Man, When a Stranger Calls and Black Christmas) and a needed return to form thanks to filmmakers like James Wan, David Sandberg and Jennifer Kent.

As a massive fan of happy-go-not-so-lucky genre hybrids, it should come as no shock that I abso-f$%king-lutely dig John McPhail’s Anna And The Apocalypse – his Scottish Christmas horror musical zombie invasion flick with a heart of solid gold (co-written by Ryan McHenry). High School Musical meets Footloose meets Shaun of the Dead, with all the yuletide yucks you could want. Each song so deliberate in message – warnings about social media hypnotism to escaping small-town mentalities – and each zombie interaction coated in appropriate amounts of bloodshed. Gremlins, Anna And The Apocolypse, Black Christmas – my new favorite X-Mas triple feature.
Ella Hunt stars as Anna, a high school teen who dreams of jet-setting before her university stint and the pursuit of a successful career. Father Tony (Mark Benton) disagrees with his daughter’s decision – as any protective parent would – but a freak event keeps Anna from fleeing her simple little community – the zombie apocalypse.
