Surprisingly poignant

Morir de Amor is a charming little tale. It's a story that focuses on two caged parrots reminiscing of memories past as their owner sleeps nearby. A rather important memory that the owner was not privy to. While the beginning starts out rather ho hum it quickly recovers with its quirky charm, humor, and rather subtly becomes rather poignant as the story nears completion. The style in which the film is done works for it, and the music choices are spot on! Definitely an enjoyable film to watch, it got thunderous applause at the festival. And I guarantee you, after this short film, the name "Pedro" will no longer be just a Napoleon Dynamite favorite.

Weird but wonderful

Warning: Spoilers
This Spanish-language short is very enjoyable and well made, though its art style might catch you by surprise. At first, its squiggly-type lines and simple drawings might have you think it's not all that good a film, but this would be a mistake. Yes, they look simple, but the art actually works well. I like how they used shadows on the birds and how the images jiggle a bit. It's hard to describe but they get a lot out of these seemingly simple pen strokes.

The story is told, of all things, from the point of view of two parrots that are locked in a cage together. They've apparently been there many years and the parrots, believe it or not, reminisce about their old life in the jungle--just before they were caught by a much younger version of their current owner. In this, the man is much younger and in love with a woman--a woman who has a secret that the birds know but the man will never understand.

Overall, the film is clever and I liked its rare uses of color to accentuate the freedom of the good old pre-cage days. A very strange but compelling film--I want to see more from these folks who made MORIR DE AMOR.

A delightful flight of fancy

Warning: Spoilers
In watching this I learned one, unintended, lesson: feed your parrots on time! Or suffer the consequences of learning long buried secrets. You see, in the beginning, the Lenny-and-Squiggy-esquire comedic parrot duo are imitating the cuckoo clock. When the hour chimes, they look expectantly at the box of parrot feed in their napping owner's lap. He remains sleeping and they begin reminiscing, via audio cues. The parrots reactions, even while reliving the story, are priceless.

The story progresses, indiscretions are revealed. At one point, we are literally shown "the birds and the bees." The choices of when and where to use color and when to stick with black and white artfully help in the telling of this romantic, albeit adulterous, tale.

If you want to catch this short they are offering t over at www.Filmporium.com The $5 DVD also includes the pirate tale "Jolly Roger" and the jazzy "Cameras Take Five".
