Paris-based Apc (About Premium Content) has acquired world sales rights on the six-part Finnish thriller “A Good Family,” currently filming in Estonia before moving back to Finland.
The high-end drama about love, marriage and parenthood is based on Finnish author and screenwriter Petri Karra’s 2019 novel “The Dark Light” (“Musta Valo”). More or less ignored for 75 years, this curious ‘B’ program picture now finds its way directly to a Warner Archive Blu-ray release. Cult actor Lawrence Tierney has an atypical ‘swell guy’ role as a Marine veteran thrust into a murder mystery and made the fall guy for nefarious foreign spies. Anne Jeffreys becomes his co-fugitive when the villains frame him for murder. It’s like a fancy 1960s romantic thriller, except on a micro scale. Just the same, Phil Rosen’s movie crams a lot of incident into its brisk 62 minutes. Consider it a gift to Lawrence Tierney fans — they might like him in a role that Cary Grant could play.

Paramount announced Wednesday that it is moving the wrestling-themed animated film “Rumble” from a release date on May 14 to February 18, 2022.
This makes the studio the first to move a film slated for release in May 2021, though it might not be the last as studios weigh whether or not to abandon hopes that the Covid-19 pandemic will subside enough for theaters to reopen nationwide in the second quarter.
Disney has already moved the live-action “101 Dalmatians” spinoff “Cruella” from theatrical release to Disney+ on Memorial Day weekend, but is still committed to a May 7 theatrical opening for Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow.” Other films currently set for release in May include Universal’s “F9” and Lionsgate’s “Spiral.”

Friday is here, and that can only mean one thing. The weekly barrage of new releases on VOD have arrived to tempt viewers to part with their hard-earned cash, and there are some real big hitters on offer. To sum up how badly the ongoing effects of the Coronavirus pandemic have affected the theatrical industry, The Croods: A New Age is now available to rent or buy, despite the animated sequel having topped the domestic box office for the last three weekends, and it’s still the number one movie in America as we speak.

Obviously that wasn’t the case, and the $200 million action thriller is now looking to pull in some big numbers...

When your existing I.P. has been run into the ground with endless sequels, it still must soldier on, according to Hollywood. When it comes to the Saw franchise, Lionsgate is at least providing what looks to be a fairly fresh spin on things with Spiral. The ninth film in the horror series is officially titled Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and was birthed by an idea from Chris Rock.
The first trailer has now arrived, also starring Rock as a detective who investigates a series of gruesome murders, and from this preview, looks to be the next target. Also starring Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols, director Darren Lynn Bousman is back. Judging from the trailer, there’s a glimpse of comedy to be had alongside a Se7en-esque scenario.
“There are so many movies that I’ve watched and gone, ‘Three jokes would have made that movie a lot better.

The game is on. Chris Rock’s follow-up film in the “Saw” universe of horror movies has a first look teaser and a new title: “Spiral.”
Rock stars as a detective who stumbles across Jigsaw’s game from the outside and tries to track down the killer to solve the mystery, all seemingly while the other events of the previous “Saw” films seem to be taking place. It’s unclear whether the film is explicitly a sequel, prequel or spinoff, but it is a passion project for Rock, who executive produced “Spiral” and based the story off of his own love for the franchise.
Samuel L. Jackson will play Rock’s father in the film who likewise gets sucked into Jigsaw’s violent and bloody game. Max Minghella will play William Schenk, Rock’s partner on the police force, and Marisol Nichols will play Capt. Angie Garza, Rock’s boss.

Lionsgate really doesn’t want “Saw” to die. After a number of sequels that seemingly drove the concept and characters into the ground, the studio tried to reboot the whole damn thing with “Jigsaw” in 2018. That film didn’t necessarily light up the box office. Now, with the help of Chris Rock, “Saw” is returning, but with a brand-new title, “Spiral.”

The Saw franchise saw a whopping seven movies released between 2004 and 2010, with audiences and critics gradually becoming tired of watching B-list actors escaping ever more unlikely torture traps. Lionsgate attempted to reignite the series in 2017 with Jigsaw, which was a financial success but failed to spawn any sequels. Now it seems we’re in for another take in Spiral: From the Book of Saw though, and the first teaser trailer has just landed online (officially this time).
This take on Saw arises from a concept devised by Chris Rock. Yes, you read that right. Comedian and actor Chris Rock apparently conceived of a new direction for Saw and is starring in (and executive producing) the movie. He’ll appear alongside Samuel L. Jackson (who I think is playing Rock’s character’s father), Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols.

Director Kurtis David Harder, producer of Harpoon and What Keeps You Alive, has crafted a film whose title, Spiral, is symbolic of the endless cycle of hate that plagues the world and America in particular.
Set in 1995, the film follows same-sex interracial couple Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) and Aaron (Ari Cohen) who, along with Aaron’s teenage daughter Kayla (Jennifer Laporte), are moving out of the big city and into a small town; however, Malik is haunted by trauma in his past, as the film opens with a flashback of Malik seeing his ex-boyfriend’s murder. This hate crime is seen in flashes throughout Spiral, but despite the violence, Malik speaks of the bravery that comes with living your life loud and proud and he isn’t afraid to show off his man in this new very white, very straight neighborhood. On second thought, don’t rewind this tape. Destroy it! Don’t let anyone in your family watch it!
The phenomenon known as “J-Horror,” or Japanese Horror, had been brewing for decades, but it was Hideo Nakata’s Ringu (“Ring”) in 1998 that jumpstarted the movement. Motion pictures of the ilk are usually derived from ghost stories, Japanese folklore, and revenge tales, mixed with a modern horror-film sensibility, a dash of gruesomeness, and often a creepy dripping-wet ghost-girl (a yūrei) with long black hair covering her face coming to get you in your dreams or out of, say, a television set, in your waking hours.
Ringu spawned a franchise in and of itself, with eight films in total, two television series, six manga adaptations, five international film remakes, and two video games.

n 1998, director Hideo Nakata (Dark Water) unleashed a chilling tale of technological terror on unsuspecting audiences, which redefined the horror genre, launched the J-horror boom in the West and introduced a generation of moviegoers to a creepy, dark-haired girl called Sadako. The film s success spawned a slew of remakes, reimaginations and imitators, but none could quite boast the power of Nakata s original masterpiece, which melded traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary anxieties about the spread of technology.
A group of teenage friends are found dead, their bodies grotesquely contorted, their faces twisted in terror. Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus are the next global streaming services slated to roll into Europe, joining Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in some of the world’s most lucrative markets. But along with the opportunities come local programming and investment obligations that the new players — including upcoming services Peacock and HBO Max — may struggle to meet.
Chief among these is a requirement that their catalogs offer at least 30% European content by the end of 2020. It’s still unclear how that 30% will be assessed — according to number of hours or number of titles — but officials are expected to clarify the issue by the end of this year. “It’s going to be a challenge for the European Commission to come up with a fair system for the quota,” says Ed Border of London-based consultancy Ampere Analysis. Counting either by titles or hours could be open to abuse.

Three years ago, Spain’s independent TV production sector was heading toward a crisis with ever lower profit margins. Cut to 2019, and Spain is enjoying a golden age of drama series production, while consolidating as a global production center.
One major factor in the turnaround has been Movistar Plus, the pay TV unit of Telefonica. It has made the biggest push into high-end original production of any telecom in Europe — just as U.S. and European telcos scramble to compete for content with media companies.
The first results, at home and abroad, of Telefonica’s content drive are now in.
One is a turnaround. In the fourth quarter of 2016, Movistar Plus lost 54,000 pay-tv subscribers. After its first three original series had been released, Movistar Plus added 80,700 in Q4 2017. Since July 2017, releasing 22 original or returning series through September, Movistar Plus has posted eight consecutive quarters of steady pay TV household growth,...

Sales of French programs alone accounted for $190 million (compared with €205 million last year), driven by animation and fiction shows. The report, unveiled during the Rendez-Vous With French Cinema hosted by TV France International in Biarritz, also said that the rise of international streaming services has bolstered the sales of French TV programs, in particular animation and crime series such as “Baron noir,” which was acquired by Amazon U.K., HBO Go Scandinavia and Spain and Ivi in Russia.

Just over two weeks before its Sept. 20 global launch, Netflix has dropped its first full franchise trailer of “Criminal,” a 12-episode, four-part police interrogation anthology which reworks the procedural format taking it to a new European level, while focusing on what episodic drama is often held to disdain: Character and actors’ performance.
Netflix has already teased the crime thriller’s best-of-their class European key cast. Others trailers have targeted the individual countries where “Criminal” episodes are set – U.K., Spain, France and Germany – three in each country.

Fueled by the demands of the digital marketplace and linked to evolving local tastes, dramatic series have attained unprecedented influence in the French television industry, marking a notable departure from the country’s longtime approach.
For decades, international acquisitions dominated Gallic airwaves, while local production focused mainly on one-off telefilms, less-than-prestigious family shows and self-contained limited series.
The breadth of change has been remarkable. As late as 2011, U.S. imports accounted for 72% of the country’s top broadcast hits, while that number fell to just 4% by 2017. Domestic productions ascended in turn, rising from 3% in 2011 to 42% by 2017.
This shift in public appetite can partially be credited to a shift in the industry itself. “The main channels used to program a lot of French cinema, but [today] French cinema has more narrow appeal than before,” says Francois Godard of Enders Analysis. “So they had to look at other program genres, and they were...
