Sword Fight
kosmasp28 April 2007
I'm not good with remembering words that describe a fight style, but I found the word I was looking for here on IMDb at another review "Wuxia"! This style involves people fighting with swords (hence the English or at least a better understanding of the movie title "Shadowless Sword"!

I liked this movie not only because of the fight scenes (that's never enough to give a movie a really high rating), but also because of the characters. Although I'm aware of the fact that this is not MUSA (which was genius in my eyes), this still holds up very good and is worth a watch, if you don't hate Wuxia movies at least! ;o) (after you watch the movie, you can read the review from a fellow here at IMDb "Yagyu_Tajima")

Its hard out there for a prince...
gwailo2471 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
So you're the last heir to an usurped throne in 10th century Korea, you got one hot chick out to protect you, an equally hot chick out to kill you, and all the men around you look like Captain Jack Sparrow (apparently the eyeliner/dreadlocks look is older then previously thought).

The plot isn't much, but this movie is great eye candy. The film quality is very good, the sets and costumes are very colorful, and the fight scenes are excellent. The CGI effects are nice and enhance a lot of the scenes without being overbearing.

The acting is pretty good, with a mix of drama and comedy, not too melodramatic. The villains of the Killer Blade Army get extra style points for sinister appearance and for being generally evil, with the monk earning best of show for his tattoos.

Overall not an earth shattering movie, but very enjoyable visually as well as full of action. Recommended for fans of the genre.

Flimsy plot, but very interesting fight scenes
phoenixlau17 April 2006
First thing first: "Shadowless Sword" doesn't have much of a plot. Nothing much happens, which is pretty ridiculous considering it is a 2 hour movie. Basically, you could describe it as one long trek/chase sequence, periodically interrupted by the fight scenes, a la "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown" or the 2nd half of "The Island".

Having said that, the fight scenes are the main point of this movie, right? It is rare to see something new or original in martial arts movies, but here the filmmakers have a great eye for visually interesting fights. The backgrounds are gorgeous, and contribute a lot to the fights themselves. For instance, a lot of stuff breaks: pillars, tiles, and other objects all explode violently from destructive weapon swinging (think of the "Matrix" lobby scene but with swords instead of bullets). Roofs are there to enable aerial battle, and even being submersed underwater can't stop the sword fight from continuing!

Mostly eye candy
williamli21 September 2006
I saw an extended version of 116 minutes (apparently there is a 104 minute version as well).

First off, the title makes you expect something else. I expected this "Shadowless Sword" to play some pivotal role, but no show. This film should better be named "Back to Balhae" or something, because that's what it's all about: a trek to Balhae. The storyline is pretty thin, but a martial arts movie with an original and strong story is a rare thing, so you shouldn't be too surprised about that.

Technically this movie is very beautifully shot, with excellent art direction and costumes. The stuff on screen really is exquisite and should satisfy costume-aficionados and the artists among us. The actors do a good job too, no overacting or amateurish stuff, but at times over-directed it seems. The two main actresses are very pretty, so very nice to look at. Clearly intended to attract the mainly male target-audience, I guess. No ugly women to be seen, not even with the extras. The fighting scenes are very enjoyable, but they miss the rawness and directness seen in HongKong martial arts movies. And unfortunately some stuff badly copied from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. And overall the pace of the movie was excruciatingly slow. I hope the director and editors will learn that even pretty shots shown too long do get boring.

So bottom line: Don't get me wrong, it IS a rather enjoyable movie, no question about that. But you'll forget in a week or two. Good shot by the Koreans at the Wuxia genre though. Keep 'em coming!

Poor man's CTHD or Flying Daggers
TylerDurden730 April 2006
I saw this film had an average rating around 5 the other day, so I figured I'd chime in on it, because I think a 5 is a bit harsh. I enjoyed the film, it has some decent fight scenes, and the acting is fine imo. Yeah, it borrows a lot from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, etc..., but I enjoyed the film regardless of that.

I really liked Ji-Woo Choi(who played Yeon Soha) in this film. She was great in the fight scenes and had a seriousness about her character that she portrayed very well. One thing I didn't like was some random oddness in the film. Could have been the script or it could have been the director, its hard to tell, but there were times where there seemed to be a comedy direction out of nowhere during some fight scenes and conversations and whatnot. I felt the film worked better as a serious drama, and the random comedic parts didn't fit in well imo. Also I felt the explosion kill move that is seen a few times throughout the film was a bit corny as well.

Anyhow, I think a rating of 5 is a bit harsh. House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Hero are three of my favorite films, and while this film is not in a class with those three, its worth watching if you enjoyed those three films. I think a 7.5 is a fair rating for this film, rounded down to a 7.

All around not a bad movie..
jink_8327 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Action scenes were decent. These days not even Hong Kong movies make decent action flicks like these... Except those high budget Hero, Flying Dagger movies.... Acting was OK. I mean the bad guys acting was great but the prince and the bodyguard women were horrible. At least the extras did a very good job. The Story was straight forward but its really based on history of Korea. However it could have been better. Very beautiful women(as always for Korean films). Also Choi Ji Woo guests stars in the movie although she comes out for a short amount of time. All around this movie is a OK movie... If you bored and want a movie to kill some time then this is it.

Lively in some places, dull in others
Leofwine_draca14 November 2012
Not a bad film, but not a great one either. THE LEGEND OF THE SHADOWLESS SWORD is a historical romp from South Korea that sees a princess and a warrior travelling through a land inhabited by lots of different people who want to kill them. It's essentially a journey narrative that meanders between moments of lively action and dull, drawn-out sequences of would-be romance and talk. Lots of talk. I wanted to like it, but the lack of vitality makes this a somewhat plodding affair in places.

Films like this seem to be ten a penny these days, and indeed the wushu genre has been alive and kicking in China since the early 1990s. I was looking forward to seeing what a Korean spin on the story would bring to the table, but sadly LEGEND OF THE SHADOWLESS SWORD has little character and style all of its own. In fact, it feels heavily indebted to other productions in places, with half the cast at times made to resemble Johnny Depp in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies.

The good news is that it's not all bad. The action, when it hits, is well handled and explosive, literally so when it comes to the various death scenes; I liked this touch of originality, as it's an example of something we haven't seen before in a film that feels slightly over familiar. In fact, the whole look of the film is great: it's colourful, with bright costumes, fine-looking sets and also some fine-looking women to boot; it seems the producers went out of their way to cast the most beautiful actresses they could find. It's just a shame, then, that's there's no more substance behind what turns out to be a fairly superficial outing.

Very entertaining and visually excellent
tirkkanen8 October 2006
Now I'll start off by saying that there is no reason to compare this movie to the Asian blockbusters such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Hero etc. It doesn't matter if you've seen them or not because I think this movie has it's own atmosphere and feel to it. I guess it's because this film is Korean. There is a distinct difference between Korean and other Asian action movies. They have their own style of making these fantastic action/epic/drama movies. Another great Korean movie in the same veins is Musa The Warrior, so if you've seen it you have some idea what to expect. Some other comment stated that there are some weird comedic features in the fight scenes, but I wouldn't point that out in the review. It was only one short scene and that's all she wrote. On the contrary I found this movie to be quite serious in the whole. Though everyone would say there wasn't much of a plot I answer; There is an adequate plot to carry this movie without a problem, it is after all made for entertaining purposes, not for the Oscar nomination.

Now more about the movie. The fighting is mostly sword-fighting. There are a few more exotic arms with some of the fighters too like bows or poles. The fights were made watcher friendly in a way that you can actually see what is happening in the fights all the time. So it's not just a clinging sound and a million swordstrikes per second where you can't tell which sword belongs to who. So you can see every small detail in the fights which is in my opinion definitely a good thing. And yes, there is a lot of flying in the movie, but used much more tastefully than for example in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The fight choreography in general was amazing. Saw many moves that I hadn't seen before in similar films. The actors were good, especially the leading actress was very convincing. When I watched this film, I had been bored out of my mind all day and was about to fall to sleep. NOT after the movie started rolling. I was glued to my seat from start to end. Summary: Good action and choreography, good acting and very, very entertaining.

as Soo-real crew says "explosion"!!!!!!!!!
greencandyholic4 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is revolved around 2 characters Gun-Hwa pyung and Yeon So-Ha,but that doesn't take away from any of the other martial artists. They managed to make comedy that made you laugh while inputing some KICK ARSE scenes of action. They even put a scene where they're fighting in WATER so you can only imagine the beautiful visuals and effects. The only thing I was a bit skeptical about was the *explosion* of action going on, it made me look at it as a sort of crappy effect, but over-all it has beautiful laid-out action scenes along with an okay plot. It will have you laughing for sure and wanting to play swords as well as exploding crap up!!!!!!!!!!

This is a poor movie
thecavkid17 April 2006
I'm a big fan of Foreign films in general, and was quite looking forward to viewing this. My friend had said it was quite good but not great and it had some cute female actors. Hey I'm no film snob, if I don't care if there are some huuuuuge plot holes, if it entertains me, I'm happy.

Sadly it failed on this simple criteria. The fight scenes were messy and IMHO poorly choreographed. The actors tried their best, but the script was not good. The plot was the usual rubbish seen a million times in Crouching Tiger and its ilk (and was clumsily handled as well), as was the awful, woeful wire-work. Actually, if you liked crouching tiger et al, you'll actually probably like this movie. For me, I want those 2 hours of my life back.

I seriously seriously nearly made this the FIRST FILM IN MY LIFE I have stopped watching halfway through..... and I've watched some BAD movies in my time.

So why did I give it 2? Nice cinematography and the 'Bad Girl' (Ki-Yong Lee) is ridiculously sexy. Thats about it.

Excellent action and excellent eye candy !
smokem-122 November 2006
Sometimes, films are just about color and movement- action and thrills. SHADOWLESS SWORD will not change your life, it won't make you think about the meaning of existence- but if you enjoy great fights and gorgeous actresses- then this film is for you ! Yun Soy is wonderful as the cool headed bodyguard - a much better role for her than ARAHAN- whilst she is beautiful, I found her to be very convincing in this film. So sit back , relax and just be entertained by the two lead actresses, the ultra cool underwater fight scene and the superb fight with the long mace inside the hut .

Three words can easily describe this film- FIGHTS, FEMMES and FUN !!

Good not great
dbborroughs24 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
After all of the princes in a kingdom are killed by agents for a rival country, one last prince is located and a female bodyguard is sent to bring him back in one piece. Once The prince is located the journey back becomes a never ending battle for survival. Okay action film is just a little too unreal and fake for its own good. The fighting is stylized with a great deal of wire work and over done effects (lots of smashing rocks, columns and walls) but it is serviceable. The costuming and make up involves a great deal of eye makeup on the men and everyone looks like they are from the roadshow of Pirates of the Caribbean with Jack Sparrow being the model of choice. Give the film points for looking spectacular but at the same time it plays like several direct to video films I'm seen on Voom's Kung Fu channel. Its not bad but it its not great. Its solidly good even though its clearly reaching to be so much more. A rental. between 6.5 and 7 out of 10

Could've been better.
three_point_prodigy28 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie could've been a lot better in many aspects. For one, why must many Korean action movies insist on injecting comic relief in some of the more serious scenes. Some fight scenes were obviously meant to make the audience laugh even though the series of actions leading up to it are extremely serious. For example, when the hero fights with the monk (who is out to assassinate him), they were practically fighting Jackie-Chan style until finally the monk dies. WTF?!? If it's a serious movie, then keep it so.

Besides the identity crisis issue, this movie has no plot. Unfortunately, this is true for many Asian movies. The director must've be hoping that the action or cgi will make up for the lack of storyline because the strongest hint of a plot in this movie is that a Prince must be brought back to his village alive so that he can rule his people. That's it! I've basically spoiled the whole movie with that line. Asian movies disappoint me because they have no story. Until they start incorporating movies with a plot, their film industries will never be up to par with Hollywood (classic Hollywood anyway).

Thirdly, there is absolutely no character development. All you see is the same facial expression on these characters and short flashbacks that are suppose to make you either feel pity for them or despise them. This is a 2 hour long movie of talking, fighting, talking, fighting, talking, etc. You get the point. Anyway, when you get to the end of the movie, the hero supposedly knows a special move perfectly which is used to kill the villain. How corny is that? There is no mention of how that move is performed or how he learned it or who taught him. It just came out of nowhere and kills the villain in a flurry of fast camera moving scenes.

Here are other things that are wrong with this movie. It is too long (it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't boring). It doesn't give off a genuine feeling of an adventure of epic proportions (ei. lord of the rings, narnia, crouching tiger, etc). Also the characters are one dimensional and only wear one or two expressions through out the movie at most. The dialog was weak. Lastly, the picture quality was a letdown at certain points. Some scenes would look like it was taken from old stock footage.

The movie wasn't a complete letdown. The goods include thundering fight scenes (you gotta watch it on DTS), good choreography, and sometimes good scenery.

A fun but mediocre copy cat
reyalvarez28 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
How can the director of this film be proud of his work? Included in the extra feature of the DVD are some interviews of the director and actors. They reiterate ad nauseum how proud they are of this film. In spite of these positive comments, this film is just a carbon copy of some cheap Hong Kong martial art movie with some shameless rip-off of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow. Fight scenes are merely Koreanized version of Chinese martial art fight scenes with those exaggerated sword plays and physically impossible midair ballets. Just like many Hong Kong movies, the plot is close to nonexistent. Just like many Hong Kong movies, the characters are one-dimensional. The good girl swordfighter is saintly good while the villains are just plain evil. Unlike the real world, there is absolutely no gray area. Also, why do so many of the Balhae bandits look so much like Captain Jack Sparrow? In fact, with the effeminate gestures and weird make-up, one of them looks as if Johnny Depp was speaking Korean. Did Jack Sparrow immigrate from 18th century Caribbean to 10th century Korea to father some offsprings? Although it was a fun movie, "Shadowless Sword" is very unoriginal. It is just a rip-off of martial art movies from Hong Kong.

Been There Done That
rohonnag18 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
i saw this film today, and the only thing that struck me is that i must warn others who will waste their time seeing this film!

if u have seen the following films then you can skip out this one, coz it rips off... 1. crouching tiger hidden dragon 2. hero 3. house of flying daggers 4. Brave heart (yes brave heart!) 5. even a bit of bleach! 6. pirates of the Caribbean

now i will give the reason why the story is fairly simply, female warrior must protect and bring back reluctant king, the problem is, the makeup is out of sync, people are looking like they came straight from bruckhiemer's pirates of the Caribbean 2! next comes the fight, well done as they are, its a straight rip off from hero and crouching dragon, without the breath taking choreography of the mentioned films.

then there is tragic female lead's death towards the ending, even the last sequence of preparing for war was a rip off from brave heart!

but still , this movie is bearable and watchable, if its on cable or u get a free copy from somewhere!

A good martial art movie
stefanozucchelli17 July 2022
A good martial art movie but with some exageration that make it funnier than epic. When i see body that blows up after being hit by a sword and arrows that are powerful as bazooka, i think something is not right.

Keeping them on the run
unbrokenmetal6 November 2007
"Shadowless Sword" was one of my favorite wuxia movies in the past 2 years. It has creative ideas (see the fight scene under water!), a great couple of heroes (beautiful So-yi Yoon from "Arahan" and Seo-jin Lee), and its simple principle "keep them on the run" avoids tedious moments. The movie takes us into 10th century Korea. After all possible heirs to the throne have been murdered, the warrioress Soha (So-yi Yoon) must bring the last surviving prince Jeong-hyeon (Seo-jin Lee) to the throne. He'd prefer an anonymous life under cover, though. But since enemies are already knocking at the door, he has no choice but trust the girl, follow her and run for his life...

Action packed, maybe not quite as stylish as "Hero" but still good looking, and occasionally with good dialog (for example when the prince wonders if he'd make a good king, he never had to think about that before), "Shadowless Sword" is enjoyable throughout.

Great movie
macias-52 December 2007
Well, what can I say -- great movie. The comparison to House of Flying Daggers of course is inevitable ;-) Shadowless Sword is more humorous (but not comedy-fun), there is a bit of adventure theme, the story is simpler (so there is less who-is-who guessing), and has two dazzling beautiful (!) women as leading characters. I almost would say I like Shadowless Sword more if only director didn't made special effects awkward.

Maybe it is just me, but I expect that after hitting objects can explode, but not after cutting. And here some objects fall apart (with great speed and energy) what looks amazing (with proper music) but some... explode, which is not funny, not spectacular, not magical, not mysterious -- it is simply bizarre. It is so out-of-place that it spoils every fight scene when director decided to put explosion after sword cut. Pity...

A warrior is sent to bring back the last royal member to ensure security in their country
ltlacey25 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
From the comments, I'm beginning to think I saw a different movie. We start out with what looks like a historical drama. In the time period of 976 A.D. a group has overthrown the royal family and taken over the land and people. There is but one remaining royal member, someone who disappeared 14 years earlier, so the counsel decides to send their best warrior to locate this man and bring him home. This is the main plot and is a very plausible and good storyline. And within this plot we have the evil group who wants all the royals killed, and we learn the real reason behind this action along the way as well. Plausible plot still going. As it turns out, the warrior sent to bring the prince home safely is a young woman, and through flashbacks we discover the relationship between the warrior and the prince she has been sent to get. Everyhing ties in nicely. There are other flashbacks that flush out the story and fill in the blanks. What we have here is not just an action movie with a lot of great choreographed fighting scenes (with everyone but the comic relief darn good looking), or what could have been a real event, but a love story. The relationship the develops between the warrior and the prince. The inevitable outcome. Kind of like a lot of operas (which could be the case). The only thing that bothered me about this movie was that there was too much music, and at times the music did not match what was going on in a scene. But when the music fit, it was beautiful. A huge thanks to whoever decided to write in an English horn for a lot of the background music as this instrument helps to set the tone (no pun intended). And this is a beautiful movie to watch as well, though sometimes the running in the air gets to be a tad silly when overdone, which happened now and then in this movie. Ladies, do not pass this one by. The real story here is the love story, and thankfully it's not mushy or overdone. Give this one a try.

Great Film: Better than many of this genre
les696917 March 2010
This is a great little film, lots of action to keep you glued to your seat. I wasn't bored for a second. The beautiful So-yi Yoon is reason enough to watch this film as she acts as a very convincing bodyguard for the hapless prince. She is the best warrior of Balhae sent to bring him back to take up rulership after all the other Princes are killed. The female villain isn't half bad looking either. The villains are all very cartoon like but the fight scenes are really well done, so if you like this genre of film and if you enjoyed 'House of flying daggars' you will enjoy this film as long as you aren't expecting an in-depth storyline. The only downside of this film for me was the silly flying through the air scenes, I know they are part of this type of film but it spoils it for me. It is probably why I preferred 'House of flying daggars' to 'Crouching tiger, hidden dragon'. So I would certainly recommend this film and would definitely watch it again.

Very Entertaining (Possible Spoilers)
mwendel18 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The Shadowless Sword is an action packed movie with fight scene reminiscent of the House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It has female and male heroes and villains as is typical for this genre versus the testosterone filled American action packed films.

Colorful costumes and artistically done fight scenes. They don't explain the techniques being used a whole lot which might make the exploding bodies at times make more senses versus being funny.

You'll see some really basic symbolism in the movie such as the bad guys wearing black, the good guys wearing white so its easy to tell who is who.

There are some flashback scenes that could have been worked in a lot better than they could have. This film with a bit more work could probably be a very compelling movie as a story versus one lone chase scene. But at not during the film was I checking my watch which is always a good thing.

I do recommend seeing this film if you like far east Asian sword fighting and martial arts in general.

Awesomw! So-Yi Yoon ... All the way
ateeqimran20 August 2007
I was a little hesitant before watching this movie since I hadn't seen a Korean movie before... and Man was I surprised!! If it was not for a few glitches here n there this could have been a timeless classic! It's been acted out so well by the lead actors. Especially So-Yi yoon. She is just about perfect!!. In fact for me she is way better than Zhang Ziyi..

Frankly, I wasn't expecting the level of maturity shown in direction, storyline n acting. And yes, it is one of the New Line Cinema's. Although this is a period movie I could make out the little differences of Korean culture from Japanese, Chinese or Thai.

Aah man what a movie n what a beauty... I had never praised an actress so much before.. But here I go.. I am nuts about Yoon.

Well.... there isn't a dearth of beauties in good Ol India.... but hey! she knows martial arts too....

I strongly suggest this one for those who liked Crouching... Hidden. While u get the movie I am gonna dream about So-Yi Yoon. Yoooooooooooooooonnnnnn!

Kick Ass Awesome - Brilliant Fight Scenes Combined with Emotional Depth
totalovrdose3 February 2015
Shadowless Sword, otherwise referred to as Legend of the Shadowless Sword, is a poignant action drama set in 926 AD, the film efficaciously blending the two separate genres together.

So-ha (So-yi Yoon) is the greatest soldier in all Balhae, her skills with a sword, not to mention her training in martial arts, making her an unmatched expert on the battlefield. The Dongdam kingdom, with the strength of the Killer Blade Army at their disposal, is responsible for killing the Balhae royal family, in their quest for total control.

A final heir to the throne, Jung-hyun (Seo-jin Lee) lives, and under order from the prime minister, So-ha ventures forth to find him, and bring him back to the capital. Essentially a story of comradery between these two characters as they traverse the dangerous environments, Shadowless Sword develops an emotionally poignant story of love, friendship, honor, remembrance, restoration and growth.

Alongside So-ha, Jung-hyun, originally care-free, self-centered and hapless, remembers his former capabilities, and begins to grow beside her into the man he is destined to become. But the journey is far from easy, fraught continuously with peril, as Hwa-pyung (Hyeon-jun Shin), a man consumed by hatred, and Yung-OK (Ki-yong Lee), a woman who is almost as equally efficient as So-ha, hunt them at every turn. The focus on the heroes characterization unfortunately leaves little room for the villains, and though they are developed, it lacks the sense of completion the audience feels for the protagonists by the end of the feature.

Some of the abilities and military techniques used during the combat scenarios require a certain amount of suspension of disbelief, which is also true for the moments when characters are able to soar across the air currents with ease, traveling from one part of the field to another in record time. Initially, a number of the fights are executed at an incredible pace, and it can prove difficult to concentrate on what is happening during the flurry of battle, although viewers will quickly adjust. Later, the film includes stunts that are either executed slower, or in slow motion, which really allows the audience to truly appreciate the beauty of the stylized acrobatic combat.

The fights are wondrously executed, the violence and beauty of battle remaining steadfast throughout, the same going for the dialogue, which is as intelligent as it is engrossing. The score, including the final song accompanying the end credits, conveys underlining meaning, that draws the audience further into the plot, all of these features combined, not to mention the brilliant acting by the cast, making for tremendous entertainment.

Not quite as good as Crouching Tiger HIdden Dragon, but hardcore like an action movie
wynonasbigbrownbeaver18 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
My brief synopsis:

Pro's: 2 Hot chicks with swords (especially the villainess-she's a smokin'!), spontaneous combustion, decapitations, decent fight scenes along with the settings, eloquent Korean dialog (thank goodness for subtitles), "breathtaking visuals" almost unashamedly stealing from CTHD but still cool to look at warriors that glide in the air, and finally the unraveling back-story of the prince.

Con's: Not much to say negatively. People might have problems with the similar elements of CTHD but that's open to discussion. It might be too predictable and linear of a story line for some who expect the typical climactic finish when it comes to battling the final boss.

Overall Assessment: I recommend it, it is pretty darn cool to look at visually and has a story line full of substance. Rent it/ or Own it on iTunes.
