Baretta begins this story impersonating a homeless in order to nail a guy who regularly attacks vagrants. But he fails to catch the thief who runs away. One of Baretta's friends, a vagrant, is sent to the hospital because if this. So he resumes his hunt for the killer. And one more time he fails, but gets hurt and gets left in an alley. The only rescue he will get will be from a female called Annie - Kim Hunter - who will take good care of him, whilst taking him as a prisoner. Amusing tale that reminds me a sort of MISERY scheme; remember the Rob Reiner's film starring James Caan. Kim Hunter is touching in this moving character of the old tramp losing her head, thinking Baretta is her lost son. Baretta who becomes the man to find for the precinct personal. Of course, our lead cop is annoyed because the killer is still on the loose and he can't do anything against it. Yes, a poignant story, with a gripping ending, but without explanation about why the killer stabbed homeless people.
