This episode is another of my favorites and it's an interesting one because it's more of a character study on Poison Ivy. Ivy has never quite been one of my favorites but this episode for once actually makes her stand out by rounding her out and making her rather tragic.
I really like how it starts out in a rather surreal sight when we see Ivy whom seems reformed and has a good life with a suburban home and family. It was really interesting because for a while I kinda believed it, seeing what would happen if she decided to go the other way. I like how she expressed her desire to have a family and live in a nice home, it really shows that this isn't some two dimensional villain but is a person that actually does have dreams and desires.
But unfortunately as an old saying goes, it's too good to be true. Batman and us see that there is a snake nest in this garden. We then make a discovery that I'll admit gave me a chill and you can say is a bit of an homage to the film "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". Her family turns out to be nothing but plant beings she created.
However this was not just for her petty schemes but in her twisted mind it was the only way she could have a family of her own on her terms. As she stated her abilities have prohibited her to procreate. This to me makes Ivy a tragic figure, as we see like anyone else she is a person that is doing anything possible to make her dreams reality. She could of had a house and garden she just needed hang in there a little longer, to find another way the right way. Just because things didn't go the way she wanted them to doesn't mean it has to be the end of the dream.
The tragedy is Ivy is unable to find that other way or fight the right way to make her dreams come true, and so in desperation she tries to short cut her way to making them come true. But a foundation built on lies will not stand and of course Batman makes her house crumble.
The final minutes are haunting and heartbreaking as we see Ivy look at a photograph of the family she created, we then see her produce tears. Sadness of a dream she has lost and can never come home again.
