THE CLAMPETTS GO ROYAL
tcchelsey26 February 2023
Buddy Atkinson wrote this first episode for Season 6. Atkinson had written a lot of comedy material for the JIMMY DEAN SHOW. He eventually became a producer for the Beverly Hillbillies the following season.

Outrageous as usual, and the way all us kids back in the day loved this stuff. You have to admit, this was an original comedy series, the tv gift that kept on giving, as kooky ideas and situations were endless . There had been really nothing like it, although there's a slight comparison to the MA AND PA KETTLE movie series in the 1950s, however minus the millions of bucks and the posh Beverly Hills mansion. Here, the gang inherits a genuine English castle. Why not?? So Jethro gets the idea that everyone should dress up in old fashioned royal costumes to make a "fashion statement" to snooty Beverly Hills. Actually, in real life, this would have become a fashion trend in Hollywood! The colorful costumes are really campy and cool, and without fail, Mr. Drysdale gets caught up in the act wearing his own fancy duds. Sure enough, he gets demoted to "commoner" status, wearing something that looks like a potato sack? See to believe. Super gag appearance by the master of frustration, Paul Lynde, playing a passport official. One glance at the Clampetts in royal drag and he thinks he's on a Candid Camera type show, talking to air vents and the ceiling, sure there's a hidden cam and microphone in the mix. At the time, Paul Lynde was becoming a phenom in Hollywood and was put to good use on many sitcoms. Of course, we will never forget his many hilarious years on HOLLYWOOD SQUARES. Recommended stuff.

SEASON 6 EPISODE 1 box set.
