Unbecoming Habits: Part 2 - Batty Tom
Prismark101 August 2020
Episode 2 shows off the quirkiness of the series. It also brings more characters to the fore.

Simon Bognor survives his jeep accident. Xavier, a monk who was nearby, rushes to Bognor's rescue and takes him to a local pub to calm his nerves.

Bad news for Monica Bognor. She is waiting for her husband at another pub as he was rushing to join her.

At least Xavier gives Bognor some gossip. Gay monks and the growing of weed. All this is interrupted when Monica finds her husband.

A local eccentric Batty Tom gives a hint that he might know more about the murdered undercover officer. Later Batty Tom finds himself in danger.

This was a brisk paced episode. Although it was too convenient that Bognor forgot to phone his wife and she just happens to walk in on the pub he was in.

There is an element that no one can be trusted especially the monks in the priory.

Patrick Troughton plays Brother Xavier and he very much steals the episode. It is always good to see more Troughton given so many of his Doctor Who stories were lost. Although several of them have been recovered in recent years.

With Bognor being transmitted almost 40 years later means in a sense this is another lost story featuring Troughton that has been found.

Troughton was very nearly matched by Robert Eddison who plays Brother John. His voice is so distinctive, it reminded me straight away of that elderly knight guarding the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.
