When the episode begins, you learn that Katie Monahan's older sister is a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall. You also learn that her father is NOT pleased about this, as he wanted her to become a nun. You also realize that he is a controlling and humorless guy whose inflexibility would bring the family to a crisis. This is because later the daughter announces she's going to marry her boyfriend...who seems like a nice guy but who the father hasn't personally picked for her. By the end of the show, Mr. Monahan is pretty much alone and sad....and stuck with his anger. Without later episodes where he learns to bend a bit, this couldn't have worked well. However, as a total package the shows work well and are quite touching.
