I like the snow it covers up the dirt

***SPOILERS*** NYPD police woman Casey Jones, Beverly Garland, goes undercover as the late Eva Harris's niece Francis in order to not only solve Mrs. Harris strange death, a hit & run, but the reason she was deliberately run down outside her import export warehouse on the Manhattan waterfront. It turns out that two of the people working for her Herb Carson, Arthur Batanides, and Carl Walton, John Cassavetes?, were using her business to run guns for Castro's rebels in Cuba or anyone else who was willing to pay top price for them. It was the manager of the late Eva's import export business the wetting in his pants Andrew Garcia, Frank Silvera, who had no idea of what was going on who was caught in the middle of this gun running operation.

Casey for her part has her cover blown early in the episode and worked over by Walton only to be rescued by her fellow NY police officers but as for Carson & Walton their still going on with their gun running operation even though the police as well as FBI already got wind of it. It's the weak link in the chain Andrew Garcia who's about to chicken out and blow the whistle on his two cop-workers who are in reality secretly planning to knock him off. That's when greed among the two, Carson & Walton, takes hold and does them both in before the cargo of guns ever leaves the port.

It was the gutless at first Andrew Garcia who put his fellow gun runners, which in fact he wanted no part off, on ice by blasting Carson who planned to ice him and get the full share of cash for his criminal gun running operation. That's after Carson whacked Walton before he was to whack him first feeling that he'll double cross him in order to get his share of the gunrunning profits. Garcia the only survivor of the trio was to spend the rest of his life behind bars but that was a far better deal then what those who planned to rub him out, Carson & Walton, ended up getting.

A Few Observations

I'll leave the plot recap to fellow reviewer Kapel. Instead, what follows are a few remarks on this unexceptional though entertaining entry. Casey doesn't get much screen time, most going to the plotters. Thus Garland fans may be a little disappointed, myself included. However, the series strength with location shooting is once again in evidence-- a really seedy and atmospheric wharf-side area. No glamour anywhere in this 30-minutes. Also, there's more action (fisticuffs) than usual, though rather poorly staged. Note too how the force that the illegal armaments are being smuggled to remains unidentified. I guess the force must be soviet-related since TV wouldn't want bad guys smuggling arms to Cold War good guys.

And catch what may be the only instances on 50's TV of cold weather misty breathing. The crew must have been filming outdoors during really cold weather, another realistic aspect. Then too, the series notes said the production crew often wore heavy sweaters under heavy coats. But the cast often had to stay in character, so no extra insulation for them-- hope they got extra pay.

All in all, it's an okay story with a really good look at seedier, cold weather parts of NYC.

Across the World

When a woman dies in a hit and run. Casey Jones pretends to be a relative of the dead woman and takes over the running of her import/export warehouse on the waterfront.

The warehouse was being used by some of her employees for gun running. Casey Jones cover is blown and she gets a beating.

However the gunrunners fall out and one of them plans a double cross.

This a Casey Jones lite episode. Maybe it was the foul snowy weather that might have eased the workload.

Most of the episode belongs to the gunrunners. It seems they all have a death wish, winding each other up, fighting among themselves. Even the acting is hysterical as the script.
