Ain't no mountain high enough when you get away from an abusive husband.
mark.waltz18 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Still front burner on the daytime soap opera "Guiding Light" when this episode was made, the beautiful Kim Zimmer had a memorable guest appearance as Charlene's previously unmentioned cousin Mavis (ironically not at the showers or wedding), a dance instructor who helps the girls prepare for a talent show where they are to play The Supremes. It turns out that Mavis's husband is an abuser, and Charlene tries to convince her to leave.

Having won several Emmys as the flamboyant Reva Shayne Lewis, Zimmer proves what a good dramatic actress she is, and it's heartbreaking to hear her being abused. To lighten up the story, the women are forced to deal with Suzanne's desire to wear dark makeup, causing Julia to object even though she's not doing traditional blackface. The episode just shows how ridiculous Suzanne is with this desire, a good point on the absurdities of blackface in the arts. This is one of the better episodes dealing with serious issues, one that could easily require kleenex where laughter occasionally interrupts.

Now Remember, When You Witness Spousal Abuse, . . . WALK AWAY!
richard.fuller14 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This episode by and large sums up what was so wrong with this show.

They discussed topics like a disease of the week, spouting off figures and quotations (four women are beaten every minute, four out of five dentists recommend . . .), then they move on to their next endorsement or condemnation, depending on what the moral might be.

I recorded this episode simply to see Kim Zimmer, best known for Guiding Light, and to see how spousal abuse was dealt with on this show.

The quartet were at Zimmer's home and they departed, then Charlene goes back to get her handbag or something, and overhears Zimmer being beaten in the kitchen by her husband.

What does Charlene do? She leaves! She can slam the door all she wants, but fact of the matter is, she left a woman to be beaten by her husband! Fade to a commercial, then comes back and what do we see? What we always see; the four women of the supreme court, casting down their judgement from their soap box, in their little furniture establishment.

they can say what people need to do who are in abusive relationships all they want, but look at this message these ladies are sending out about not getting involved! A veritable talk show, masquerading as entertainment and offering moderate information.

From there, the show goes into a really strange lip-synch performance (for charity, no doubt) that the cast are doing for . . . . something.

Lip-synching to Supremes songs, and Suzanne shows up painted African American, while the other three have big hair and are still pale.

Something here was seen as funny by someone.

Strangest bit was definitely the lip-synching of the 'ahs' in the Supremes 'Aint No Mountain High Enough' Yea,it was real convincing.
