Fun with Cloris Leachman and Billie Bird
jayb-2868430 April 2020
This isn't the most believable of plots. Then again, in 80s sitcom land what is? The fun comes in watching guest Billie Bird, and in the last couple scenes where Cloris Leachman's Beverly Ann character gets to be truly funny and sweet as she defends Natalie. The very last shot, with the table full of nick-nacks, is extra funny because the granny deserves it and Beverly Ann knows it.

Natalie should have sued her. Wrong messaging writers.

Warning: Spoilers
Andy's grandmother plagiarizes one of Natalie's stories and publishes it in a magazine receiving $5oo.oo for it.

I don't get this episode. The woman steals Natalie's story, publishes it, and Jo, Blair, and Tootie think she should drop the idea to sue her because she's an old lady, because she's Andy's grandma, and because she's a neighbor. Huh? Way to go to her friends for not backing her up.

As an artist who has had my works stolen from me in the past and sold for money, you bet your petunias that I did something about it and won. I mean if the woman was remorseful or perhaps showed signs of being mentally ill, maybe Natalie not suing her would have been an appropriate option. But the woman was smug, not remorseful, and absolutely didn't give a damn about her grandson's friend and the impact on him. Natalie has been working hard at all kinds of different jobs and trying to get work published for years. When a person creates they put in a lot of time, effort, and their heart & soul into their works. So I totally understood her on this episode. Maybe the grandmother should have stolen Jo's bike and sold it, or stolen a role in a play from Tootie, or stolen some stocks and bonds from Blair. They'd all be ok with it, right? Natalie had her receipts, so-to-speak. So she had gads of evidence. I think she also should have sued the magazine. At the very least it may have forced proper credit and an apology from the magazine as well as tipping off other magazines a warning about this person.

Natalie should have sued her. She was on the right, and shame on her friends for making her doubt herself:

"Am I crazy or has a wrong been done to me?"

Then Andy comes over. At least says he's sorry about what happened. He says his grandmother wants to talk to Natalie. Nat agrees tho she is very angry. Beverly Ann tried to calm Natalie down, by saying that the woman is making a peace offer and Natalie wants to go to war. Wrong. The woman was smug and said she wasn't going to confess to anything.

If I was Natalie, I wouldn't ever let Andy handle any of my personal property anymore. He shouldn't have given his granny Nat's story, to begin with. Nat should have told him that next time to ask her first before giving out her things to other people.

The only saving grace to this fiasco was Beverly Ann. She had some good & funny lines and backed Natalie up tho took a more diplomatic approach until at the end when she saw how the woman was to Natalie. I laughed so hard when she messed up the woman's figurines on the table that she didn't want anyone to touch.

Anyway, kind of disappointing messaging. To let the woman get away with it. How many others has she done wrongs to? How many more will she in the future? She may as well be an oil company. They get away with everything. 5/10.
