Davy Jones pre-Monkees
kevinolzak3 June 2017
"Moe Hill and the Mountains" was similar to other shows' episodes which attempted to appeal to the rock and roll crazed teenage viewers, only instead of genuine groups like the Standells (THE MUNSTERS) or Chad and Jeremy (BATMAN) this series' boys decide they'd like to form their own band. In his second dramatic role of the season (following a serious turn on BEN CASEY), former Artful Dodger in Broadway's OLIVER Davy Jones lends genuine gravitas to the proceedings, as he too was in the same boat, Screen Gems still searching for the proper vehicle for their budding teen heartthrob, soon to join the airwaves as THE MONKEES. Here, Jones carries himself with the ease of a true professional, as he joins in on guitar for a rough and ragged version of the future Monkees tune "Gonna Buy Me a Dog," written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, with actual drummer Richard Keith pounding the skins (his career starting out on I LOVE LUCY). Katy Holstrum is drafted to be their manager, but a bad deal offering a measly $30 a week gets her fired by the teens. Enjoyable fluff, though interesting to note that all four Monkees filmed their auditions on the set of THE FARMER'S DAUGHTER, Michael 'Blessing' Nesmith going through the drawers out of burning curiosity!
