A lot of familiar faces and a pretty good plot...
planktonrules24 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
For folks like me that saw a lot of television in the 1960s and 70s, this is a most enjoyable episode because there some familiar faces among the guests on this episode of "Hawaii Five-O". Anthony Zerbe, who played LOTS of supporting roles on TV (mostly crooks) is the baddie in this one, but Frank Cady (Sam Drucker from "Green Acres" and "Petticoat Junction") and Casey Kasem (the famous DJ) are also on the show. This, combined with a fine plot, make this one well worth seeing.

The show begins with a defendant being acquitted in a criminal trial because the State repeatedly could begin their case because of a critical no-show witness. While this acquittal is clearly the right legal decision according to the Constitution, an onlooker in the court is not pleased and decides to take the law in his own hands. As the now free defendant leaves the courthouse, a shot rings out--and the man is dead.

Soon McGarrett receives a special delivery letter claiming credit for the slaying. According to 'Mother's Helper', he was sick of seeing crooks getting off and has decided to help McGarrett by killing this bad man! So, Steve has a fan who now wants to help him by killing criminals that just need killing! A bit later, a convicted rapist is being paroled from prison. But Mother's Helper apparently is outraged and kills this guy as well. Like in the other case, he sends McGarrett a letter admitting he did it and talking as if Steve enjoys his 'help'! Now McGarrett needs to figure out how to flush out this murderer. But how? And, if this doesn't work, who is next on this psycho's hit list? Overall, a pretty good episode. Zerbe played a fascinating man--ill-educated but very brilliant in his planning and executions. Well wroth seeing and quite original.

One actor who is always a bad guy
VetteRanger6 March 2023
As soon as you see Anthony Zerbe, you know he's going to be the bad guy. LOL He just has that kind of face (Still around at the age of 87 as I type, but he's been retired for several years).

Here he plays a vigilante set on eliminating criminals who get off on technicalities or early parole. And he starts out by killing two of them and bragging to McGarrett in typed letters. He's pretty sure McGarrett will consider him an ally.

However, Five-0 doesn't cotton to vigilantes, and the danger for this one is he's decided to ramp up his strategy by going after the judges who contribute to putting a criminal on the street. McGarrett attempts to set McKenzie/Smith up by appearing on Casey Kasem's local TV show, and McKenzie arranges a meet with McGarrett at a funeral ... but at the funeral, who will fall into whose trap?

Mother's Deadly Helper

Warning: Spoilers
Another season 6 winner!! I love stories about vigilantes taking the law into their own hands. Big fan of the Dirty Harry film MAGNUM FORCE where Callahan has to take on 4 motorcycle cops (David Soul, Robert Urich, Tim Matheson, Kip Niven) who've been executing criminals. Seems like every cop show had this type of episode. STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO had an excellent episode featuring Bill Bixby as a wannabe cop who begins to execute criminals and sends letters to Karl Malden. A very similar scenario to this episode where Anthony Zerbe is the "concerned citizen" who idolizes McGarrett and sends him letters, seeking his approval. Zerbe is just perfect in this type of role. He honestly believes that McGarrett is on his side, when any rational person would have no reason to think such a thing. After all, McGarrett having the reputation that he has (tough on crime but very by the book) is the last person you would expect to just ignore these killings or worse yet cheer this "mother's helper" on. But Zerbe is delusional enough to believe this. Which is why at the end when he realizes he's been "betrayed" he totally snaps and promises to zap McGarrett when he gets out. Zap! Zap! LOL!

The scenes with Casey Kasem interviewing McGarrett were good. Steve-O Five-O made excellent points :) Frank Cady from GREEN ACRES played the judge kidnapped by Zerbe.

Wasted H50 ep. Series was going downhill

Warning: Spoilers
This tale of a right-wing sniper determined to avenge criminal wrong doings tried very hard to be a splice if life. There in lays its trouble. The avenging angel of a sniper runs an arcade. Weak storyline! Two killings and a kidnaping in the ep cannot make us forget how pedestrian and small this story honestly is. ( No wonder Kam Fong was disgusted with the show's declining quality and wanted out!) The funeral BTW scene is good but uneven. ( See my reviews for better shows than this particular episode to watch!)

No pretty girls in it with speaking parts hinders it quite a bit too. Pass!
