Calling Mr. Gropff
dougdoepke2 October 2010
A holiday show that probably didn't require much rehearsing or setup-- all the skits take place in front of the stage curtain. Get a load of chesty Jayne Mansfield for a glimpse of 50's-style celebrity glamour. Note also the Calypso number backing up the Lucky's commercial. For a brief period, Calypso was promoted as replacing rock & roll in American pop culture. Needless to say, the trend didn't last long.

The show really takes off with the "talent scout" segment. The great Mel Blanc does some amusing imitations, and notice how the normally well-composed Benny has difficulty not breaking up. The three Landrews Sisters are a real hoot, thanks to the fat girl who also has a very good voice, and the familiar cheap blonde Iris Adrian. But, I'm not sure how well the ju-jit- su act works since the idea itself seems rather questionable. Anyway, the show's notable mainly for its amusing glimpse of pop culture circa 1957.
