The Rangers need to modernize
bkoganbing30 November 2016
Martin Milner guest stars in this Laredo story, a very hilarious one about a big city policeman joining the Rangers to teach them modern crime fighting techniques. Captain Parmalee is somewhat reluctant to have him join the team, but if his three favorites can learn anything so be it.

His debut isn't impressive. After Neville Brand has fallen into a mud puddle and is looking rather disheveled, Milner proceeds to expound on the fact in primitive Texas you are forced to hire a lot of people dirty and unqualified. All of them hate Milner, but Brand's hate is in a class by itself.

Milner never really showed a flair for comedy until this Laredo episode. Usually he's cast as callow youths in his salad days and later on as professional types. Here he's a Dudley DooRight sort and the Rangers especially Brand just enjoy seeing him make a fool of himself.

Billy Wilder favorite Cliff Osmond plays the Indian outlaw they seek, Shelley Morrison is his squaw. Seeing her make a fool out of Milner is priceless.

Lots of laughs in this one.

Martin Milner Joins the Rangers
wes-connors12 October 2008
Reese (Neville Brand) is put down, and repeatedly falls into some mud, as prissy and proper Martin Milner (as Clendon MacMillan) arrives at the Rangers' Company B, looking for work. Surprisingly, Parmalee (Philip Carey) hires Mr. Milner on the spot; and sends him out on a mission with the reluctant Reese, Chad (Peter Brown), and Joe (William Smith). The newly formed quartet of Texas Rangers goes out to stop overweight, drunkard Cliff Osmond (as Running Antelope) and his tribe of Native American Indians. The boozing Mr. Osmond loots and burns towns, killing whatever gringos haven't managed to escape. Milner's foolish beliefs regarding "Indian rights" clash with the other lawmen…

The portrayal of Native American Indians reaches an unfortunate new low, in only the third episode of the series. Licorice-loving Shelly Morrison (as Linda Little Trees) makes her first likable, but ludicrous appearance; interestingly, this "comic" "squaw" is noted to have participated in the series' first documented slaughter, by jealously knocking off a comely blonde woman! Milner's character is treated like a fool, for advocating human rights, and the rule of law; but, the Indians on-screen certainly deserve what they get! Milner appears in-between "Route 66" and "Adam 12", sporting a longhorn moustache.
