Eddie's MAKE-BELIEVE Girlfriend
ccthemovieman-127 November 2006
Eddie Haskell makes his second season debut, coming over to the Cleaver house and announcing to June he has a girlfriend....and that his parents say "she must have some money." June isn't impressed and sends him upstairs to see Wally. Eddie then brags that she's some private-school girl, high society and all that, and then asks Wally if he wants to go over to her house with him. He says okay, but when they get there it's obvious the girl doesn't know him, that this is Eddie's make-believe girlfriend. It's a short and awkward stay at the girl's house and she is impressed with Wally, of course, not Eddie.

Later, she calls up Wally and then has her mother call up the Cleavers, all trying to get Wally to take her to the dance. June makes the arrangement, which infuriates Wally, and justifiably so.

It winds up to be an interesting story and - surprise - Eddie actually turns out to be a good guy in the end, something that didn't happen much in future episodes. He even confides in Beaver.

strange episode
vitoscotti7 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Wally has a major temper tantrum. Unusual for him. (Ward screamed at Beaver loudly in the previous episode). Now Eddie makes up a girlfriend, and actually visits her. The Eddie character is taking shape as the classic sitcom rat. Thought he showed a human side here. All sitcoms have logic holes but LITB is heavy on them.

Wally's first love triangle
AlsExGal28 April 2024
Eddie Haskell claims to "have a girl" - Caroline Cunningham. She's a rich girl who goes to boarding school. Eddie asks Wally if he wants to meet her, and he says sure. But when Eddie goes to her house it is readily apparent that Eddie and Caroline have never met until now. But the boy who makes an impression on Caroline is Wally. When Caroline's mother call's June on behalf of Caroline and asks her if Wally will go to the upcoming club dance with her, June accepts on Wally's behalf. This angers Wally because, not only was he not consulted, but he considers it an act of betrayal to go out with Eddie's girl, even if that is not what she actually is. How will this all work out? Watch and find out.

Beaver is confused by all of this politics of dating and thinks that matters were simpler when Wally didn't like girls. At the end there is a rare vulnerable moment between Eddie and, of all people, Beaver that is worth the price of admission.

Also, Wally throws quite the tantrum in this episode, and I can't think of another episode where he behaves in such a way. It's usually Beaver who reacts explosively where Wally is usually stoic about whatever life throws his way.

"Eddie Haskell" is born.

Warning: Spoilers
Eddie stops in looking for Wally but somehow announces to June he has a girl who goes to boarding school which is a good indication her family has money. Eddie tells Wally his girlfriend is Caroline Cunningham. Eddie suggests they go over for a visit but when they arrive at the house Eddie won't ring the bell. Mrs. Cunningham hears voices and invites the boys into the house. When Caroline comes down it's clear Eddie has no idea who she is, and she doesn't know Eddie; but she is interested in Wally. Eddie claims Caroline was playing a game by pretending she didn't know him. It's clear she doesn't and doesn't want to.

There is a dance coming up at the country club and Caroline wants to invite Wally. When Caroline calls Wally, he gets nervous and hangs up because he believes Eddie's claim Caroline is Eddie's girl. Mrs. Cunningham calls June and arranges for Wally to take Caroline to the dance. When Beaver comes home he tells June that Caroline is Eddie's girl. June warns Beaver not to tell Wally; but it's clear the innocent "date" is going to have a complication that June wasn't expecting.

Eddie has come over to see Eddie and claims he has been doubled crossed. Eddie claims he was going to take Caroline to the dance but she's going with someone else. Eddie says he is going to fix the other guy good, but if the guy is bigger will Wally help. Wally goes up to his room and Beaver ends up telling Wally he has a date with Caroline. Wally comes down in a real huff proclaiming he is not going to any dance with Caroline.

June is flummoxed and says we have to do something, meaning Ward has to fix it up. Ward has an idea to get a date for Eddie Haskell. Good luck with that. Eddie shows up and asks to see Wally. He tells Wally he has a sore throat and can't go to the dance, so would Wally take her. Beaver is confused at the turn of events and so is Ward and so is June. June wants to ask Wally what happened but Ward tells her not to ask any questions.

Wally is dressed and ready to go and gets a checklist of behaviors from Ward. While everyone is gone, Beaver is in the garage crushing things. Eddie comes over and admits to Beaver he made everything up. Eddie says he made up the sore throat thing because he knew Wally wouldn't take Caroline because Wally is his best friend. Beaver is still nonplussed but concludes it sounds like Eddie did a nice thing. Eddie shrugs and accepts Beaver's invitation to crush things.

One of the best episodes ever for character development. Eddie is now firmly developed: He constantly needs to boost his ego; To be polite we might say he is prone to exaggeration, to be clear, he just lies; his facade of politeness is a cover for his disdain of all adults; he can be cruel; he is a coward; he is a bully; his reputation seems to be known by almost everyone in Mayfield; but he values Wally's friendship above all else. The character of Eddie Haskell has to be one of the most enduring in TV history which is a tribute to the writers and the acting of Ken Osmond.

Just a final note, I don't believe we ever see Wally throw another temper tantrum ever again. I was surprised at this one.

EDDIE, HIS DATE AND LOTS OF LUCK.
tcchelsey11 December 2023
Series creators Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher actually got it right from the start. In the early years of the series, they primarily wrote all the scripts and they should have continued. This is a prime example, and it brings back lots of memories.

Eddie "supposedly" has a girlfriend named Caroline Cunningham --who does exist! On a bold move, he takes Wally over to her house for a meet and greet and she really doesn't know him that well, though she sure as heck likes Wally! Welcome to the real world.

This is a bit that has been done by many sitcoms, and it never ages. In a way, you also kind of feel sorry for Eddie (and that's rare!). One thing you learn about Eddie Haskell through the series run, he's actually a lonely guy, but has a darn good friend in Wally, who sort of? --understood why Eddie was Eddie. Call it teenage calculus.

This is another one of those champion stories, and actually Eddie shows some of his better qualities.

Caroline is played by popular child actress Carol Greene who had previously appeared in many episodes of the EVE ARDEN SHOW. The acting is quite good here, thanks to director Norman Toker. Norman was a child actor himself on radio, playing HENRY ALDRICH. He later directed for Walt Disney in the 60s.

A sentimental episode of sorts, before the walls come tumbling down next time.

From SEASON 2 remastered Universal dvd box set. 6 dvd. Released 2014.

May Contain Spoilers!

Warning: Spoilers
In this episode, we see Wally's first interesting girls develop. His awkwardness is SO relatable to me when I recall that period in live. When it came to girls, you still didn't know whether to hold hands with them or throw rocks at them. LOL. Wally perfectly portrays this part of early teen life, when you're too little to be big, and too big to be little. That said, the show-stealer here is Eddie Haskell - as he usually was. We get an in-depth look into Eddie's character, and are treated to one of the very few times we see his sensitive side, underneath the wagger, and false bravado. The ending scene with Beaver is one of my favorite in the series with Eddie.

Beaver Spills The Beans
StrictlyConfidential30 October 2020
(*Eddie Haskell to June Cleaver quote*) - "My father says that it doesn't pay to waste your time with people who don't count."

As if Eddie Haskell wasn't already despicable enough as it is - The scriptwriters have gone and turned him into a bold-faced liar, as well.

I mean, why the heck Eddie would tell such an obvious lie about Caroline Cunningham being his "girl" is beyond me.

And the fact that June Cleaver would actually make a date for her son, Wally without first consulting him about it makes absolutely no sense to me, whatsoever.

Anyway - (IMO) - This episode of "Leave It To Beaver" was one of the stupidest of them all.
