The Visitor is a Werewolf and the need a Lone Ranger for Silver Bullets

This episode follows several great ones: The Quality of Mercy (a pithy study of what it means to be human and of freedom and its cost, and which has perhaps the finest final shot of the series; and, no, it's nothing to do with Veronica); The Mark of the Beast, perhaps my second favorite episode of the second season; Survivors; and The Pirate's Curse.

The Visitor is a goofy episode about werewolves. It also involves an old Beau of Veronica's. We learn Malone is a chef of fine French cuisine, which he picked up in France (funny, I though the World War I warriors and journalists were mostly in trenches and ate mud).

The werewolves look ridiculous and I don't buy them for a minute. Aliens? Sure. Pirates? Why not? Everyone love a good pirate yarn. Shape shifters? Well, they're akin to werewolves but at least The Mark of the Beast was funny. Now it seems they're repeating themselves fast and furiously. They should've gotten off the Plateau at the end of this season. They've clearly exhausted everything they can safely plagiarize. And Season three was hardly worth the trip (but, oh, how I wish they'd done a season 4!).

Perhaps I don't like this episode because it comes hard on the heels of the superior The Mark of the Beast. Or perhaps because the werewolf suits look pretty moth-eaten. But while The Quality of Mercy moves one to think and The Mark of the Beast moves one to wry smiles and The Pirate's Curse lets us hear the usually spoil-sport Veronica giggle a lot, this episode feels pretty flat to me. But they're coming up on a really neat cliff hanger.
