Life and Death are Arbitrary
Hitchcoc5 March 2015
This is simply an intense view of the operating room of the 4077th surgical hospital. It involves the give and take of the surgeons as they try to do their jobs, despite a variety of roadblocks. They don't always win and there are some near miracles. Hawkeye performs an open heart massage which has everyone stunned, only to lose the patient later. Frank nearly removes the only kidney a soldier has. Fortunately, Trapper stops him in time. The fatigue and effort are the stars of this drama. These guys just keep going. I don't know how accurate the series is. Can people really work with the precision of these guys for 32 hours straight? This does have the famous Sidney Friedman line in it: "Ladies and Gentlemen, take my advice. Pull down your pants and slide on the ice." I've used it many times.

Guest starring Orlando Dole

Warning: Spoilers
O. R. is from season three of M*A*S*H, and it was a ratings machine, but who would have thought at the time that McLean Stevenson and Wayne Rogers, playing Colonel Blake and Trapper John, respectively, would abruptly depart at the end of season three, and thus change the narrative trajectory of this fine series. Anyway, this episode also stars Orlando Dole, Odessa Cleveland, and Jeff Maxwell. Jeff, who played Igor starting from season two, teamed up with superfan Ryan Patrick in 2018 to host the M*A*S*H Matters podcast, which is superb. I would love for Ryan and Jeff to interview Odessa Cleveland.

SO UNDERRATED!!!

Warning: Spoilers
This might be the most underrated episode of M*A*S*H. On paper, it's just a longer version of the O. R. scenes, but there are so many small moments and details that make this episode great.

The little moment Hawkeye shared with an ethiopian soldier near the beginning of the episode was heartwarming. The little heart-to-heart between Trapper and Frank makes me wonder what could have been if they decided to give Frank character development. And Hawkeye performing an open heart massage and still ending up losing the patient is so heartbreaking.

Also this is the episode in which Sidney Friedmann says his famous line: "Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice: Pull down your pants and slide on the ice". And I think every M*A*S*H fan knows and loves that quote.

When Klinger breaks his heel, he is shown with a 'spike' style heel in his hands. As he walks away, the still intact shoe has a 'pump' style heel.

Major Burns almost takes out a Soldiers Kidney. After Trapper tell him the X-Ray shows only 1 Kidney, he stops him.

This would of Never Happened.

Would of Never been in the Army with Only 1 Kidney. Medically Disqualified. If previousl wounded with 1 of 2 Kidneys removed would of been sent home and Discharged.

If woul.
