Warning: Spoilers
In this episode Winchester shows more of his humanity, where he helps a corps engineer who has a stutter. We learn Winchester's beloved sister also has a stutter, so now we get it.

Father Mulcahey becomes a hero for the orphanage by engineering a win against the 8063rd star runner.

The Hare and the Tortoise Redux

This plot is really overused in this series. Father Mulcahy likes to run. He is not fast nor is he gifted athletically, but it helps him blow off steam. When the 4077 finds out that a world class sprinter is joining them, Klinger takes it upon himself to set up some bets with the Marines (a constant annoyance). Unfortunately, it isn't the famous runner; it's his father who bears the same name. They are now in trouble and Klinger's butt is now grass. The Father only agrees to run if the marine engineers build a roof for the orphanage (these unseen orphans are really one of the most interesting aspects of this show). Anyway, Mulcahy must run against a tall toned athlete. The second plot has to do with a young soldier who works for the corps of engineers. He and his peers have been injured when a wall fell. It seems this poor guy is treated as if he is an idiot because he stutters. Charles is incensed by their treatment and goes out of his way for this young man. We find out later that there is a serious reason.

Pompous yet compassionate. Major Winchester so misunderstood!

Warning: Spoilers
How do I measure true friendship? Some might answer friendship this way. Someone you can depend on in a crisis. Some might say they enjoy there company, conversation. Others would say compatibility, sharing the same interests, hobbies. All good answers. In my personal opinion some of my most cherished friends are the ones you can learn things from. My friend George who taught how to throw a football or my friend Neil who taught me the joy of reading. Those are the friends worth remembering. This brings me to this episode of MASH. This particular episode is broken down into two stories. The first anecdote is on the lighter side and comedy based. Corporal Klinger (Jamie Farr)has a sure fire scam involving the 8063rd and his 4077th in a rigged race. A world class sprinter has been transferred to the 4077th and Klinger smells money coming his way. Not to be selfish Klinger gets the Doctors and Nurses to join in on the bet. Our other testimonial involves a stuttering Private in post op. Private Palmer (Phil Brock) is being teased by his bed mates. To make matters worse his Captain (Thomas Callaway) enters post op and starts to berate him publicly in front of Major Winchester (David Ogden Stiers). Incensed and outraged but in a restrained manner, Major Winchester asks to see the Callous Captain in private. The Captain is mad at himself giving Palmer the responsibility but also lashed out at Palmer in front of his company. Palmer felt bad enough that three men almost died but the private had no idea the bedrock they were on was unstable. Regardless The Major tells the Captain that if he doesn't cease his insolence against the stuttering Private, he'll write up a report stating the Captain's inhumanity toward private Palmer will be placed in his 201 file for the rest of his career as a blemish in the Captain's record. Then a huge gesture of kindness by Major Winchester as he tells the Private to put down the Captain Marvel comic and take on more advance literature. Major Winchester gives him a leather bound copy of Moby Dick. The private is grateful but puzzled as to why the Major went out of his way. Later on you see Charles back in the swamp listening to a tape recording from back home of the Family happenings and gossip told by his Sister Honoria. Oh by the way she has a huge stutter. Charles Winchester preformed an act of kindness and understanding showing compassion and also the key ingredient, investing not charity but setting the foundation for a young Private's dignity. The greatest gift. The gift of knowledge. Well written script by Elias Davis, David Pollock and Co-star Mike Farrell.
