PETER GUNN – Death Watch - 1960

This is episode 68 from the 1958 to 1961 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Minerva Urecal as the owner of MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright. Albright plays Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.

A high school teacher, Christopher Dark, is staying late to mark some tests. He hears a scream come from the school basement. When he goes to investigate, he finds a female student lying in a pool of blood. He of course makes the mistake of picking up the lead pipe he finds nearby. Now the school janitor, Frank Ferguson, puts is an appearance and sees Dark standing there with the pipe in his hand.

Dark is arrested and charged with the murder. Police Lt Herschel Bernardi and D.A. Herbert Rudley ask P.I. Craig Stevens to have a look into the matter. They smell a rat and need an "unofficial" look at all the evidence. They just are not sure Dark did the deed.

Stevens does some rooting around, interviewing janitor Ferguson and various school friends of the murdered girl. What he turns up is one of the dead girls' friends, Jimsey Somers who is not all that broken up about the event. He passes this evidence onto D.A. Rudley.

When Dark finally goes on trial, Rudley asks the girl, Somers to come clean. Somers breaks down and admits she killed the girl. Somers was upset with how popular the other girl was. The case against Dark is dropped.

Not a barn-burner by any means, but it still makes good use of the 25 minute runtime.

Christopher Dark is the new school teacher in town. When he hears a scream late in the evening at his school. He goes off to investigate and finds the body of a dead female student.

The school janitor catches him picking up the lead pipe that was used to bludgeon the girl to death.

Now Dark is terrified as the neighbourhood regards him as a suspect. Thye throw brick through his window.

Dark asks Peter Gunn to come round and hear his own side of the story. Gunn asks Lieutenant Jacoby why he has not arrested Dark.

Jacoby shows his soft side. There is no evidence and if Dark was arrested. That would be the end of his career as a schoolteacher.

Eventually Dark is arrested and is attacked in the holding cell. It is left to Gunn to take him into hiding.

A dark story. As the suspect states, a new guy who has moved into town that no one knows. Suddenly there is a dead girl.

The ending was very much Perry Mason. Sameen breaking down in the witness stand.
