PETER GUNN – The Rifle - 1959

This is episode 47 from the 1958 to 61 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Minerva Urecal as the owner of MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright. Albright plays Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at, MOTHER'S.

Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) is hired by an Iron Curtain escapee to work as a bodyguard,. The man, Wolf Brazell, is a gunsmith who is working on a new automatic rifle. The Reds want back Brazell and his plans. Red types, Joseph Ruskin and Sol Gorss put the grab on Stevens when they can't reach Brazell. They give the P.I. a working over in the hope that Stevens will help. Of course Stevens does not take kindly to the fist in the face routine and turns the tables on the two commies.

Plenty of red herrings in this tale as Stevens is drawn deeper into the affair. More gun play is needed to finally settle the matter in Stevens and Brazell's favour.

A decent Gunn episode with the mandatory amount of snappy remarks mixed in with the violence.

George Stevens Jr is the director here. His father, George Stevens is well known to film fans as the man who directed, GUNGA DIN, A PLACE IN THE SUN, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, GIANT and SHANE. (b/w)

Janos Kolanski has fled Hungary after its 1956 uprising. He is a gunsmith who has created a new rifle.

Fearing for his life and his invention from communist agents. A nervous Kolanski goes to Peter Gunn for help.

Pretty soon the commies aim for Gunn.

There is plenty of twists and tension in the story. More importantly more off beat humorous moments. You can even see things that would be morphed further in the Pink Panther movies.

Jacoby having issues with one of his officers and cannot get approval from the city council.
