Those Darn Mummies!
Hitchcoc19 September 2008
It's hard to be too critical of these 1955 television shows. Ronald Howard plays a serious though rather conventional Holmes. Watson is still a bit of a buffoon. This episode involves an encounter with an old classmate of Watson's who has been receiving Egyptian memorabelia, including an actual mummy. This stuff is, of course, priceless. But there is talk of dumping it in the river because it laughs. Actually it doesn't really laugh. It makes the sound of some sort of electronic instrument. Holmes figures it out, but then there is this really pregnant ending. I did enjoy the old lady, the mother in law. She has that disdain for her future son in law and even tells Holmes, "No wonder the crime rate is so high in England." This is after he has told her he sometimes works with the police. This is kind of empty headed, but the atmosphere is fine and the character actors do a decent job.

Ronald Howard great Sherlock Holmes

This series is funny and interesting. It is different than other Sherlock Holmes series it is one half hour long. Ronald Howard is a good Sherlock Holmes. He is not arrogant, gets to the point and solves the crime without going through all the things he uncovered and a lot of gibberish to show how smart he is. He plays a fair man who wants to get at the truth.

Dr Watson played by H. Marion Crawford is a tough guy who is not afraid to fight like in episode 1 "The Case of the Cunningham Heritage." He does scare easy at times.

There are a number of episodes to watch in this series in black and white which started October of 1954.

Respectful and funny.

The Case of the Laughing Mummy
Prismark1030 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Holmes and Watson are taking a train journey as they are on a fishing trip. Dr Watson meets up with an old school friend, Reggie Taunton also known as Sardines.

Reggie is the kind of who still refers to Watson as Blinko. He was sent a mummy from his uncle in Egypt, an archaeologist about six month ago.

However the mummy laughs. Professor von Gaulkens a colleague of his uncle is clueless as to why the mummy might be laughing.

Reggie believes the mummy is cursed so he is reluctant to get rid of it, especially as he is engaged.

Sherlock Holmes agrees to investigate and quickly discovers what is causing the laughter, a weather vane.

However he is more interested just who has been mummified. Reggie has never seen his uncle and not written recently.

Maybe Professor von Gaulkens might know more about what did happen to Reggie's uncle.

A slightly humorous episode. Reggie's uncle was not murdered, more a victim of a curse. I'm sure he felt a prick.
