I'm watching from the beginning of season 1 and this's the best episode so far, you can see the dark side of Xena the warrior princess, shout out to Lucy Lawless for her performance in this episode, she made me feel she's indeed a high rank in an army! Perfect!

The influences of films such as Mad Max and Apocalypse Now is plain to see in this episode. Even some shots are mimicked.
Xena and Gabrielle comes across a particular warlike tribe called the Horde.
They are slaughtering Athenians, some of them who are being tortured.
Xena is more interested in escaping the Horde rather than rescue the Athenians.
Eventually Xena decides to lead the Athenians and take the war to the Horde.
Gabrielle is fearful that Xena is losing her humanity and turning towards her darker sadistic side.
Gabrielle decides to understand the Horde and realises that they too have a code of honour.
In a way the episode can be seen as a metaphor for conflicts such as the Vietnam war.
