This series is showing a more nastier side to Alf. Less of a chancer, more of a conniver and a crook.

Alf needs to money to bid for the vases at the charity auction, knowing that he has stuffed money in one of them. Of course he has no idea which one and how much money it might contain. If he bids too much, he could be out of pocket.
Teddy meanwhile is forced to get engaged to Madge Cartwright or else he will be sent abroad.
I just think it has been misstep to paint Alf as being more nasty which to be fair goes back to the very first scene of the pilot episode. It does not lend itself to being a more appreciative comedy.
