More pilot season coverage
The frantic pilot season is creating a bull market for top-tier talent.
Thirtysomething men including Dominic West, Matthew Perry and Simon Baker are being offered roles, as are Amanda Peet and Amy Smart, the latter of whom recently signed to star in CBS' "The Meant to Be's". Also lured back to TV is "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star Sarah Michelle Gellar.
As in previous years, there is the young hot ingenue. Last year, it was Jordana Brewster, who was offered a number of plum lead roles and ultimately picked ABC's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith". This year, it's "12 Miles of Bad Road" co-star Eliza Coupe, who is in hot demand.
There also is an accomplished foreigner who is taking over the lead of a pilot despite the fact that he's virtually unknown in the U.S. Last year, Brit Michelle Ryan was tapped in "Bionic Woman"; this year, Australian Josh Lawson landed the lead in "Spaced".
Foreign-born actors continue to be hot this pilot season: West and "Eleventh Hour" star Rufus Sewell hail from the U.K., while Baker is from Australia.
As usual, there is a departing HBO series that has freed up actors for pilot season.
Two years ago, it was "Six Feet Under", whose stars Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Rachel Griffiths and Lauren Ambrose landed leads on new series. Last year, it was "Rome", with Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson and Polly Walker doing broadcast pilots.
This time around, it's "The Wire", whose star West is a hot commodity.

ABC has given the green light to "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," a one-hour pilot based on the hit feature.
The film's writer, Simon Kinberg, penned the pilot script, about John and Jane Smith, a married couple who both work as assassins.
The film's director, Doug Liman, is on board to helm the pilot and executive produce with Kinberg and Dave Bartis.
Smith hails from Regency TV -- a co-venture of Fox TV Studios and the film's producer, New Regency -- and Liman and Bartis' Dutch Oven. The project originally was picked up by the network in January 2006 with a put pilot commitment (HR 1/31).
Kinberg describes the series project as " 'Married ... With Children' with guns."
The pilot takes place about six months after the events in the 2005 feature starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, which grossed more than $186 million in North America. The Smiths have bought a new house in a new suburb and have re-established their businesses, but the attraction and sexual spark they had found at movie's end has dwindled, and they are back dealing with marital issues.

Angelina Jolie is finally breaking her silence about her love affair with Brad Pitt, insisting the intense media scrutiny regarding their relationship makes her "giggle." The Mr. And Mrs. Smith star spoke with TV network NBC's Ann Curry for interviews airing on Thursday on Today and Sunday's Dateline, and claims the curiosity of others is "just kind of funny." She explains, "If (Brad) saw this, he would probably understand why I was laughing. Because I just don't know how to address that kind of thing. I don't talk about our - my relationship in public. But we also don't talk about it at home. It's one of those funny things that just happens, and you live your life, and you're a family. But you never actually discuss (it)." The 30-year-old star is currently in Namibia, Africa, where the couple are awaiting the arrival of their newest family member. Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have issued a statement to press attempting to intrude on their Namibian holiday - "kindly asking" them for privacy during their vacation. The Mr. And Mrs. Smith co-stars arrived in the African nation on April 5 with their adopted children Maddox and Zahara Marley and have been staying at the luxury Burning Shores resort. Since their arrival, the world's press has descended to the region in the hope of photographing eight months pregnant Jolie and her family. In a signed statement given to the Namibian press, the couple write, "We love Africa and to be here in Namibia with our family is very special for us. To the local people who have been so kind and gracious, thank you for making us feel at home. As for the press, we kindly ask for privacy so that we can enjoy this beautiful country with our children." Supporting their concerns, Namibian Prime Minister Nahas Angula told the media, "This lady is expecting. You guys are harassing her. Why don't you allow her some privacy? Harassment is not allowed in Namibia. If a person says they don't want to be photographed then, of course, that person deserves protection."...

Crusading actress Angelina Jolie plans to take out a large advertisement in America's Usa Today newspaper next week, urging an end to the violence in Darfur, Sudan. The Tomb Raider star and United Nations Goodwill ambassador is preparing for the upcoming birth of her baby with Brad Pitt, but felt compelled to draw attention to the plight of people in Darfur. Jolie tells People magazine, "I chose to take out this ad because when Congress returns from recess, they have the chance to fully fund peacekeepers in Darfur. The situation in Darfur has been going on far too long. It's only getting worse. Reports are pouring in about mass atrocities including children getting raped and killed. If people are aware of the facts, I believe many will be driven to action." The Mr. And Mrs. Smith star, who noted in the ad, "I'm an actress, and certainly no foreign policy expert," has visited the region twice - once in October 2004 and again in June 2005.
