When a bunch of all-stars get together to record a song for a cause, the result can often be cringey. But “Tennessee Rise,” featuring the pulpit-ready voices of Brittany Howard, Allison Russell, Katie Pruitt, Amanda Shires, Fancy Hagood, Emmylou Harris, and more, hits all the marks.

While Elvis Presley‘s “Blue Suede Shoes” remains one of the most famous tracks of the 1950s, fans should remember that the tune was originally by Carl Perkins. Bob Dylan offered his take on the situation. He also had some interesting things to say about shoes in general.
A car accident caused Elvis’ ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ to overshadow the original
In his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Song, Dylan praised Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes.” He said there are numerous tunes about shoes. He said “Blue Suede Shoes” was wonderfully menacing, with its implied threat of violence. He felt the tune highlighted that stepping on someone’s shoes could be a greater insult than bashing their teeth in, beating them up, or discrediting them.
While Dylan liked Perkins’ signature hit, he didn’t think Perkins’ career was that successful. “Poor Carl Perkins, watching Elvis Presley sing his song ‘Blue Suede Shoes...

The country star and outspoken advocate for queer and trans people interviews drag’s biggest stars for Billboard‘s annual Pride issue, highlighting why it’s essential to speak up for the drag and wider LGBTQ communities during a time where anti-lgbtq+ legislation is currently sweeping the U.S., especially in states like Florida and Tennessee. So-called “drag bans” are quickly capturing national attention with states prohibiting public performances or shows in the presence of minors, ultimately threatening the livelihood and artistic freedom of drags.

As Tennessee lawmakers attempt to push some members of the LGBTQ+ community out of the public sphere, Jason Isbell and Allison Russell organized Love Rising, a joyous fundraising event that offered support for those under attack. The March 21st concert hosted sets by Sheryl Crow, Brittany Howard, Julien Baker, Hozier, several members of country supergroup The Highwomen, and more, including Hayley Williams with the live debut of “Inordinary” and a cover of Deana Carter’s “Did I Shave My Legs for This?”
The fundraiser benefited Tennessee Equality Project, inclusion tennessee, OUTMemphis, The Tennessee Pride Chamber, and The Looking Out Foundation, which offered to double any donations it received up to $100,000. Donations remain open and ongoing.

According to Ana de Armas, “Blonde” transcends language thanks to the film’s intensely emotive performances.
Lead star de Armas, who portrays Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s portrait of the screen icon, revealed in a Variety cover story that her Cuban mother, Ana Caso, saw an unsubtitled version of “Blonde” and “understood everything” despite not speaking English. “There was nothing I needed to explain to her,” de Armas said. “If she can understand that with no subtitles, then we hit the spot.”
De Armas’ own accent received backlash after the first trailer for the film was released. The Cuban-born star trained for nine months with a dialect coach to perfect Monroe’s signature breathy voice. “It was a big torture, so exhausting,” de Armas said at the time. “My brain was fried.” She previously called her casting “groundbreaking” as a “Cuban playing Marilyn Monroe” and said she was “terrified” to take on the role.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) kicks off its 16th annual Doc Fortnight on Thursday, a 10-day festival that includes 20 feature-length non-fiction films and 10 documentary shorts. This year’s lineup includes four world premieres and a number of North American and U.S. premieres.

The festival is far from the only major North American showcase for non-fiction cinema. When it comes to appearing on Empire, there seems to be one common thread: Lee Daniels. The director, who helped creator Fox’s hit new series with writer/actor Danny Strong, comes from a critically acclaimed film background. Both Terrence Howard (Lucious Lyon) and Gabourey Sidibe (Becky Williams) earned Oscar recognition thanks to Daniels work behind the camera.
Daniels has worked with an impressive pool of actors, which includes everyone from Dame Helen Mirren to Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. While we’d never expect to see Mirren on the show -- though it would be delightful if she made a voice cameo like she did on Glee -- we do love the idea of Combs getting back into acting, Nicole Kidman returning to her camp days, or even Zac Efron revisiting the musical world that first made him a star.

It may not be widely-known that music mogul, and all-around businessman, Damon Dash, is also very active in the movie business, as an actor, director, and producer. He's produced or executive produced a few Lee Daniels-stamped films ("Shadowboxer," "The Woodsman," and "Tennessee"), and even has 4 feature film directing credits to his name, including "Paper Soldiers" and "State Property 2." As we noted in August, Dash filed a summons that outlined his claims of having written and oral agreements with Daniels. On Monday in New York Superior Court, Dash followed up with an actual complaint that provides the basis why Dash thinks himself entitled to credits, ownership and millions of dollars in compensation. Standing strong in one’s beliefs, especially during decades of political and racial turmoil, can be a difficult process for anyone, particularly for a person continuously contending with discrimination over their race. But strong conviction in defending their values and freedoms can help pave the way for radical change. This is certainly the case in the new biographical drama Lee Daniels’ The Butler, which chronicles the trials and tribulations of an African American butler in the White House during almost 30-years of service in the 20th century, as he supports ethnic equality.
Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of 20th century America, Lee Daniels’ The Butler tells the story of White House butler Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), who serves during seven presidential administrations between 1957 and 1986. Inspired by Wil Haygood’s 2008 Washington Post article A Butler Well Served by This Election, about the real life of former butler Eugene Allen, the...

Memphis, new 'warts and all' biopic by British director Paul Greengrass, will focus on last days of civil rights leader's life
Forest Whitaker is in line to play civil rights leader Martin Luther King in a new biopic for the British director Paul Greengrass, reports the Wrap.
Greengrass's film, titled Memphis, will be shot in a docu-drama style similar to that of his acclaimed 9/11 project United 93. It will centre on the final days of the Baptist minister's life, during which he struggled to balance personal issues with those relating to the fight for black rights prior to his final protest march in Memphis, Tennessee. King was shot and killed following the march, on 4 April 1968, with James Earl Ray later convicted and imprisoned for the murder.

Forest Whitaker is in discussions to take on the role of Martin Luther King Jr in Memphis.
The documentary-style feature will be directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum).
Greengrass recently secured financing through Veritas Films and French financier Wild Bunch, according to The Wrap.
The project was previously scheduled to be produced via Universal Pictures, but fell through due to issues surrounding scheduling and financing. Scott Rudin is still on board as producer.
Memphis will chronicle Dr King's last days with the film focusing in on his personal life, the civil rights movement, and his last protest march in Tennessee.
Greengrass penned the script for the film, which has been coined his "passion project".
DreamWorks also has plans to release its own Martin Luther King Jr film in collaboration with the late leader's family.
King's family has reportedly disapproved of Greengrass's planned portrayal of the activist in Memphis.
