Peter Jackson’s iconic The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is probably one of the greatest trilogy ever made. Starring an ensemble cast of several actors and a thousand extras, Jackson had an ambitious project on his hands.
During the auditioning of the film, MCU star Jake Gyllenhaal also auditioned for the role of a Hobbit in the film. Not putting effort into his acting and not doing a British accent, Peter Jackson had some harsh words for Gyllenhaal back in the day!

Andy Serkis is regarded as a legend for motion capture roles with prominent performances in some of the most renowned projects. The actor did motion capture for iconic characters like Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, the titular ape in King Kong, and the fan-favorite intelligent ape leader Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy.

The character of Gollum in Peter Jackson’s trilogy on J.R.R. Tolkien’s magical world played a significant role in popularizing Andy Serkis. Gollum was a thin, creepy-looking hobbit who obsessed over a shiny golden ring and crawled around the terrains of a mountain. It was revealed by Serkis in an interview that he walked on fours to achieve finesse in his role as Gollum.
What was Andy Serkis’ method acting technique to play Gollum?...

Actor Martin Freeman is known for his work on shows such as Sherlock and the first season of Fargo. He is also known for playing Everett K. Ross in the MCU, making appearances in Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War, and also playing the role of Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.
Freeman recently came under fire for his latest film Miller’s Girl which sees him play a creative writing teacher who has an affair with his eighteen-year-old student played by Jenna Ortega. Many criticized the age gap between the actors and the intimate scenes present in the film. Freeman defended the film by invoking Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List.

What is the best trilogy of all time? Fans might immediately jump to George Lucas' original "Star Wars" trilogy or maybe Christopher Nolan's more recent Dark Knight trilogy. The more prestige audiences might pull out "The Godfather" trilogy, even if the final chapter doesn't match up to the quality of the first two installments (especially since Francis Ford Coppola revisited them with a superior cut of the final chapter). The indie crowd may put forth Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy's evolving love story. But honestly, there's really only one answer that makes sense.
Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is the greatest motion picture trilogy of all time. An incredible feat of blockbuster filmmaking and a box office phenomenon, all three movies were shot back-to-back in one of the biggest risks ever taken by a Hollywood studio on a largely untested filmmaker.

In his post-The Hobbit years, actor Richard Armitage has carved out a genre niche for himself—a kind of typical thriller with him being the center of attention. He’s either accused of something or his wife has gone missing; it’s mostly along these lines. These thrillers are never great, but they are always watchable largely thanks to Armitage’s charismatic screen presence. They’re mostly adapted from Harlan Coben’s bestsellers, and they’re always on Netflix. ITV’s latest thriller, Red Eye, is not based on a Coben story, and it’s certainly not on Netflix, but with Armitage being the lead, it does follow the same pattern. And despite all the glaring logical flaws, the show is an entertaining watch from start to finish. Like most recent works of Armitage, it is very bingeable. What makes it unique, though? Well, Armitage doesn’t cheat on...

The three-year period from 2001 to 2003 has given us three films that are today considered to be among the most memorable works of modern cinematography. Peter Jackson was the bold director who had enough courage to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, and the trilogy became a massive hit. This further led to a three-movie adaptation of The Hobbit, which also became a standalone prequel franchise and as things stand now, Jackson is going to go back to his beloved Middle-earth sooner than most expected, as new movies are in the works, based on the most recent reports.

After "The Hobbit" trilogy got a mixed reception (despite being a commercial success) and "The Rings of Power" improved upon the feature films and even turned war from a cool source of thrills into the horror Tolkien described, the "Lord of the Rings" franchise is going back on the big screen where it belongs.

There are very few comic book writers who have attained the status of ‘legendary’. Comic book enthusiasts unanimously agree one of them is Alan Moore, who took DC comics to its heights during the 80s and 90s. He revived a number of forgotten supernatural characters, especially through his run with Swamp Thing, such as Spectre, the Demon, the Phantom Stranger, Deadman, and introduced John Constantine.

Moore’s contribution to the comic book world is immense, and being an industry expert for decades, he knows all the ins and outs. He understands how times have changed, and how several concepts that worked before won’t work today.

Writer/Director Kiah Roache-Turner wears his influences on his sleeves in the throwback creature feature Sting. A mysterious object from outer space crashes into a New York apartment amidst a raging blizzard, where the mysterious spider inside it is discovered by a girl named Charlotte. Charlotte dubs her new pet Sting, unaware that it’s not from Earth and comes with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. As the spider’s reign of terror increases, so does Roache-Turner’s commitment to capturing the mayhem through stunning practical creature effects, which makes this film worth the price of admission.
It’s not just the spider’s pet name, derived from The Hobbit, or the effects by the 5-time Academy Award® Winner Wētā Workshop, led by Creative Director Richard Taylor, that calls the work of Peter Jackson to mind here. It’s also the film’s sense of humor, from the opening...

From Arachnophobia to Itsy Bitsy, from Tarantula to Abyssal Spider, killer spider movies have always been in style. But there’s something special about the newest eight-legged offering, Sting. Sting is everything that’s amazing about creature features.
Sting is about a young girl named Charlotte (Alyla Browne from the unfortunate Children of the Corn remake) who spends her time drawing comics and creeping into her neighbors’ apartments by crawling through the apartment building’s air ducts. One day while doing the latter, she comes across a cute little spider which she takes home and names Sting – not after the rock star or the wrestler, but after the short sword in The Hobbit. Yes, Charlotte is a dork.
But Sting isn’t a normal, run-of-the-mill spider. It’s an alien spider that crashed on Earth in a meteorite. First,...

Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" remains one of the very best live-action films inspired by anime that wasn't actually based on anime (though it eventually became one). The 2013 movie is essentially about giant robots fighting kaiju. Its influences are many, from kaiju movies like "Godzilla" and the work of Ray Harryhausen, but also clearly tokusatsu like del Toro's beloved "Ultraman" and even mecha anime like "Gunbuster," "Getter Robo," and "Mazinger Z."
"Pacific Rim," arguably more so than "The Matrix," feels like the biggest American movie inspired by anime, a movie made by someone who loves the medium, at a time when anime was starting to enter the mainstream. But if you asked Guillermo del Toro that question shortly before the release of the film, it seems he would have been a nervous wreck.

The Zx Spectrum shouldn’t have been that big of a deal. It was a budget and underpowered personal computer released at a time when the personal computer industry had more options than most people would ever need. At the very least, the Zx Spectrum’s audio cassette media format and bizarre methods of software distribution should have made its library of supported games little more than a novelty.
Instead, the Zx Spectrum became one of the most important video game devices ever made. Benedict Cumberbatch has played many iconic characters in his career. Be it his breakthrough role of playing Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock or voicing Smaug in The Hobbit franchise, Cumberbatch has brought his absolute best to each role. He has been playing the role of Doctor Strange in the MCU since 2016 and has been featured as the character in multiple films.
However, the Sorcerer Supreme was not the first role that he was offered in the Marvel franchise. While Strange met the Asgardian brothers Thor and Loki in Thor: Ragnarok, Cumberbatch would have met them even earlier had he accepted the initial part offered to him by the studio. However, he chose to wait it out instead.

The US Oscars broadcast might have gone down a treat, but ITV’s coverage in the UK has made the internet a bit cross. What could happen differently next year?
The 96th Academy Awards seems to have gone down rather well. Nobody hit anyone. Every envelope seemed to have the right name in it. The cameras were generally pointing in the right direction. High fives all round, I say.
Unfortunately for ITV – who nabbed the UK broadcast rights off Sky, who’ve held them since 2004 – when the actual ceremony seems to be going down well, it throws the shortfalls of UK coverage into the spotlight.
Jonathan Ross took on hosting duties alongside a panel including The Hobbit star Richard Armitage, radio and documentary presenter Yinka Bokinni, actress Fay Ripley and comedian/critic Ben Bailey Smith. It was, with the best will in the world, a bizarre mix; all four seemed...

ITV took a gamble when they snatched the U.K. broadcast rights to the Oscars away from Sky after two decades and it looks like the gamble paid off.
The three-hour plus show averaged 551,000 viewers on Sunday evening. At its peak, around 10.16pm, 1.1 million were watching.
Last year’s show on Sky averaged 95,000 viewers while a highlights cut the following evening garnered 141,000.
ITV1 are set to air highlights of the show on Monday evening while the full simulcast is still available to watch on streaming platform Itvx.
In Italy live Oscars telecast scored a roughly 15% audience share on state broadcaster Rai’s flagship Rai-1 station with a peak of 1.9 million viewers, according to national ratings compiler Auditel. This year marked the return of the live Oscars telecast on Rai after airing exclusively on Comcast-owned Sky Italia for many years.

Oscars coverage in the UK was free-to-air last night for the first time in two decades but ITV’s coverage was slammed on social media for insensitivity and a lack of critical expertise.
The L.A. ceremony was watched by a peak of almost 1M UK viewers and a 630,000 average from its 10.15 p.m. GMT start time until the early hours of the morning but audiences took to X to make their complaints heard.
Deadline revealed ITV had scooped Oscars rights from Sky last year and the coverage was helmed by British broadcaster Jonathan Ross, who was joined by a panel made up of The Hobbit actor Richard Armitage, radio and documentary presenter Yinka Bokinni, actress Fay Ripley and comedian/critic Ben Bailey Smith.

The damsel in distress narrative device is a foundational storytelling element for the majority of people. Fairytales tell of princesses in peril and video games hide princesses in another castle. These women are treated as prizes to be won, a congratulatory gift to the men who saved these supposedly weak and helpless ladies who would have certainly perished without a man's intervention. Damsel in distress tropes date back to the ancient Greeks but the misogynistic belief that women are fragile creatures who need men to protect them is unfortunately still an intrinsically held value system for a shocking number of people. It's the grandmother of tropes like "fridging" as seen in media and literature, or more insidiously, "missing white woman syndrome" in real-life situations of women in harm's way.
Fortunately, plenty of alternative damsel characters exist to switch up the narrative. Megara in Disney's "Hercules" flipped the typical animated princess...

In our age of sprawling, ostentatious multi-film sagas about threats to imperial rule, Damsel’s mere existence as a completely standalone fantasy film almost feels like a blessing. Even better, the film is a welcome twist on the traditional princess narrative simply for giving its protagonist her agency without saddling her with too many archetypes.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s film, written by Dan Mazeau, still treads through familiar fantasy terrain for its first 20 minutes, during which we meet Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a peasant girl whose father (Ray Winstone) and stepmother (Angela Bassett) have accepted an offer from a neighboring kingdom to marry her off to a handsome prince (Nick Robinson) in exchange for riches. The marriage goes off without a hitch. Elodie even has chemistry with the prince. But then the other shoe drops, and it becomes clear that the match is part of a grim ritual that’s...

Plot: A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
Review: The idea of the anti-fairy tale is nothing new. From the grounded Cinderella tale Ever After starring Drew Barrymore to the John Wick-inspired The Princess starring Joey King, outdated stories of helpless maidens needing to be rescued by Prince Charming have lost their appeal in recent years. With empowerment narratives sometimes going too far in the opposite direction, striking a balance between good storytelling without archaic stereotypes is a tricky endeavor. While Disney has tried to flip the script with animated projects like Frozen or the live-action Maleficent, Netflix has delivered an update to the age-old stories of dragons, royalty, and knights with their dark fantasy Damsel.

While the Marvel Universe continues to chug along and James Gunn attempts to resuscitate the DC universe into something worth watching, we will yet again go back to the world of graphic novels for our inspiration on book vs movie. It’s really a very untapped realm as there are so many good horror comics out there, many without adaptations yet. The ones that have been adapted are very fun and interesting. Today is the mostly forgotten early 2000s movie From Hell (watch it Here), which is based on the stunning and epic graphic novel from famed wizard and all-around cranky dude Alan Moore. Like many graphic novels, the journey to page and then screen was a long and arduous one. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack the Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them along with...

Spoilers for "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two" follow.
When audiences first learned that "Dune" would be split in two, there were quite a few skeptical reactions. The 2010s, after all, were filled with multi-part adaptations of books that arguably weren't long enough to require more than one movie. Even with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," a 750-page book that certainly made good use of that extra breathing room, the production still got plenty of flak for splitting it up. "Final Minutes Of Last Harry Potter Movie To Be Split Into Seven Separate Films," The Onion joked at the time, mocking the series for dragging out the story for money, as well as mocking the fans for being so okay with it.
Although it was probably unfair to make fun of "Harry Potter" specifically for this choice, the criticism in general did feel increasingly prescient as "The Hunger Games" and "The Hobbit" pulled similar,...

He’s the consummate actor, writer, renaissance man. What on earth wouldn’t you like to learn Stephen Fry’s take on?
There’s so much you could ask Stephen Fry. Maybe something about his TV career, from A Bit of Fry and Laurie to Jeeves and Wooster to Blackadder to Qi. Perhaps his books – the novels, the memoirs, the classics, how to write poetry.
Maybe something about his illustrious film career, with Wilde the obvious highlight, but which also includes Chariots of Fire, Gosford Park, The Hobbit, Love and Friendship, and Spice World.

He’s appeared with Martin Clunes as a fictitious former new romantic pop group in Hunting Venus and was in the film adaptation of the John Godber rubbish-rugby team drama Up ‘n’ Under. Two-part extravaganzas have always been huge gambles for their creative teams. Hollywood is no stranger to shooting back-to-back sequels, from “The Matrix” to “The Hobbit” to Netflix's recent “Rebel Moon” saga, and Asian cinema has followed a similar path. John Woo split his expansive Han Dynasty battle epic “Red Cliff” in two for much of its worldwide distribution, while Bollywood's “Gangs of Wasseypur”(with its initial 319 minute runtime) has seen many iterations, first as two films, then as eight much shorter episodes for its Netflix distribution. In all of these cases, there is a gravitas that comes with the filmmaker's vision, bursting with ideas and flourishes that cannot be contained in the average one-off cinema experience. Yet with that comes a crucial hope for the goodwill of the audience, that they're willing to come back, buy another ticket and sit back down to see the conclusion of the story.

The series, which originally aired on Australia’s Nine Network, follows sixteen strangers, who will embark on a journey through the New Zealand Alps in an attempt to reach the peak of a mountain.
With their backpacks containing an equal share of $1M, the group must traverse the distance in just 14 days in order to win the cash they are carrying. But not everyone will make it, as the strangers must work together to tackle the terrain, Antarctic winds, challenges and eliminations on their way to the peak. Before he became Ryan Reynolds' director of choice in decent but forgettable big-budget action comedies, Shawn Levy was known for family movies, as well as that brief moment when he made one of the best live-action anime movies (not based on any actual anime) ever — "Real Steel." The 2011 movie belongs to a category of 2010s genre releases that performed well enough to not be considered a failure, but not so well that it spawned a franchise. And to think it all started with a phone charger.

The fact that Jenna Ortega won’t be in Scream 7 was a shocking announcement last month (apparently her absence from the sequel is due to a pay dispute), but there are still going to be plenty of chances to see her on our screens regularly. She’s set to start filming Wednesday season 2 in a few months, she’s in the crime thriller Finestkind (which just started streaming on Paramount+ last Friday), and on January 26th she’ll be back on the big screen when Lionsgate gives the psychological thriller Miller’s Girl a theatrical release. Tolkien’s high fantasy novels of the same name, these films more than just introduced the iconic realm of Middle-earth to millions of fans around the world; they became legends in their own right. So much so, The Lord of the Rings has become a holiday staple celebrated by millions around the globe.
Indeed, despite being set in a world without the usual Yuletide trappings, this trilogy has quietly become something of a Christmas tradition, and an annual viewing appointment every December. Here’s how the films’ surprise connection with the holiday season began, why they’re so perfectly suited for the festive start of winter, and how The Hobbit trilogy only strengthened the association a decade later.

The Tolkien Estate & Amazon Win ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Lawsuits Against ‘Fellowship Of The King’ Author
The Tolkien Estate and Amazon have been victorious in their court battle with an author who first published a book titled The Fellowship of the King and then demanded $250M after claiming Prime Video had stolen the idea for its TV series.
In court documents issued by the District Court of California on December 14, both cases brought by Demetrious Polychron were thrown out by Judge Stephen V. Wilson, who ordered Polychron to pay the Tolkien Estate and Amazon’s legal fees totalling around $134,000 (read the Tolkien order here).
In 2017, the same year Warner Bros and the Tolkien Estate settled their five-year $80 million rights legal battle, Polychron registered a fan fiction sequel book titled The Fellowship of the King, which he claimed to be the “the pitch-perfect sequel to The Lord of the Rings,” according to the Tolkien Estate lawyers. Rather incredibly, he then commenced a $250M lawsuit against the Tolkien...

Amazon and the Tolkien estate have emerged victorious in a multi-pronged legal battle over “The Lord of the Rings” franchise.
In April author Demetrious Polychron published a book called “The Fellowship of the King” which he claimed was a sequel to “The Lord of the Rings.” He planned for the book to be the first in a seven-part series.
The author then filed suit against both Amazon and the Tolkien estate, claiming the streaming series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” had borrowed from his sequel and infringed his copyright.
It can now be reported for the first time that a California judge summarily dismissed Polychron’s lawsuit with prejudice in August.
The Tolkien estate then countersued the author for infringing on their copyright. A U.S. district judge found in the estate’s favor this fall, granting them a permanent injunction to prevent Polychron from “copying distributing,...

Let's get something clear, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" has the perfect number of endings, and they are what makes this such an incredible and inimitable trilogy.
There are about 27 minutes of film between the moment the ring goes back into the fiery chasm from whence it came. This includes Frodo and Sam being rescued by eagles. A reunion with the fellowship. The coronation of Aragorn. The return to The Shire. And finally, Frodo sailing off into the West with the elves.
A lesser movie would just end with the reunion and tell all the rest via text on the screen. A slightly better movie would choose to end with The Coronation, as everyone in Minas Tirith kneels before the hobbits, the real heroes. After all, that is the end of the story. The evil has been defeated, and the titular king has returned. But...
