We're being introduced to a new character named "Nana", seemingly another "experiment" like Lucy, although with a much gentler, kinder personality. It's all the more tragic that she seems to have endured a lot of agony and torture.
It could be seen as "women are innocent, men are evil" like another reviewer suggests, but I think it's deeper than that. Most Japanese female characters have been portrayed as docile and many male ones as evil.
We also find out more about Lucy and Nana's and Yuka and Kohta 's background.
