2023 may yet be remembered as the year the superhero movie died. Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" was released in February 2023 and was the first notable comic book-based bomb of the year. The film was notoriously re-jiggered throughout its production, with massive and expensive SFX being finalized up to the last minute. The official budget ballooned to $200 million, although separate reports have pegged the price tag as being closer to that of Disney's notorious box office misfire "John Carter" (which cost $263 million to make). "Quantumania" still grossed $464 million, but that's considered low for a Marvel movie.
Throughout 2023, more bombs dropped as superhero movies either lost money or were considered disappointments. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," "The Flash," "Blue Beetle," "The Marvels," and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" all tanked, and while many went to see "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3," it felt like the last kick in a closing series.

Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor will make their Broadway debuts in a new production of Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet this fall.
The production will feature music by Grammy Award winner Jack Antonoff, who is also making his Broadway debut, movement by Sonya Tayeh (Moulin Rouge! The Musical) and direction by Sam Gold. Exact dates and a theater have yet to be announced, but tickets are set to go on sale in May.
While few details have been released about this version of the Shakespeare classic, the production is using the tagline “The Youth Are Fucked” and promises an angrier take on the tale.
“With the presidential election coming up in November, I felt like making a show this fall that celebrates youth and hope, and unleashes the anger young people feel about the world they are inheriting,” said Gold, who is helming this season’s An Enemy of the People.

One of the iconic moments in MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home was the union of three actors who have portrayed the webbed superhero over the years. Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire who shared screen space as their respective versions of Spider-Man, made hardcore Marvel buffs absolutely ecstatic.

Shazam 2 star Rachel Zegler shared an interesting chat with Garfield and revealed that she was a huge fan of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. During its existence, the DC Extended Universe (Dceu) gave rise to some historic blunders. My personal favorite was when Dwayne Johnson simply refused to accept that his "Black Adam" movie wasn't very good, but the ill-fated shared universe has a plethora of greatest hits when it comes to cinematic slip-ups, from the box office disappointment that was "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" to the box office bomb of super-heroic proportions that was "The Flash."
Look, it's extremely difficult to build a shared cinematic universe. Aside from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the only action franchise that's really achieved anything of note in the last few years is the "John Wick" saga, and even that can't hope to match the historic highs of the MCU. So you can't really fault DC and Warner Bros. for failing to establish an enduring cinematic multiverse — though that hasn't stopped David Ayer from trying.

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman made her debut in the Dcu in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and made a great impression on audiences. They loved Gadot’s charm and ease with which she portrayed the character. Her solo film in 2017 further proved that she was not a fluke and was born to play the character.

For a few years now, there’s been a noticeable decline in the quality of superhero movies, evident in both critical reception and box office performance. By 2023, superhero fatigue had reached its peak. Two out of three Marvel Studios releases had failed to impress, with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ barely breaking even and ‘The Marvels’ becoming the lowest-grossing MCU movie to date.
The Dceu didn’t fare any better. The year kicked off with ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ which flopped critically and financially, followed by ‘The Flash.’ However, expectations for ‘The Flash’ weren’t high, especially considering controversies surrounding its lead actor. ‘Blue Beetle’ also failed to make an impact despite its wholesome family story. Surprisingly, the year ended on a somewhat positive note with ‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom,’ which managed to be a relative success, earning $434.38 million at the box office.

The Dcu films in the Zack Snyder era were undoubtedly divisive among fans. The discourse around the films has mostly steered towards the negative side with many feeling underwhelmed by the undercooked narratives and the unsatisfying world-building. While there were bright spots such as Wonder Woman, Shazam!, and Aquaman, others were not received as well as the three.
Many DC films including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are now streaming on Netflix
In addition to Max, Netflix also streamed most of the Dcu films of that era, making them accessible to people all over the world, especially in countries where Max is not available yet. Unfortunately, it seems Netflix is now removing various DC titles from its content by the end of March 2024.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

The director of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” has taken his film’s clean sweep of the Razzie Awards on the (bloodied) chin.
The feature — a slasher horror that caused a stir last year for its childhood-bludgeoning premise in which A.A. Milne’s beloved, cuddly bear and his sidekick Piglet go on a cannibalistic rampage — dominated the awards, winning the top prize of worst picture, plus director and screenplay (for Rhys Frake-Waterfield), screen couple (for Pooh and Piglet) and remake/rip-off/sequel.
“I’m surprised our micro-budget film is being compared to Hollywood, but nevertheless I don’t mind the dubious honor as it places me in the same pool as directors whose work I admire so much,” Frake-Waterfield told Variety.
The Razzies generally take aim at the expensive flops and fails of studios and A-list stars, but — as Frake-Waterfield notes — in focusing its attention on “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,...

Slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey swept the five categories it was nominated in for at the 44th annual Razzies, which “honor” the worst of filmmaking. The awards were announced today.
‘Winnie the Pooh’ won the Razzie in the picture, director, screenplay, screen couple and remake/rip-off/sequel categories. The film, based on the beloved children’s literary character, follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and bloodthirsty murderers. They terrorize a group of young university women and the returning Christopher Robin.
The Razzie Redeemer Award, bestowed on a past contender who has “gone on to better things” since being nominated for a Razzie, went to “The Nanny” actor and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher for her leadership during the 2023 actor strike.
Drescher was nominated in 1998 for worst actress in the romantic comedy film The Beautician and the Beast.

Awards season tends to give movie fans all of the glitz and glamor that we love about Hollywood…That is, until it doesn’t. As is tradition, the weekend of the 96th Academy Awards also saw the industry honoring the worst in motion pictures, with the Golden Raspberry Awards aka the Razzies giving out statues to the likes of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Sylvester Stallone and Megan Fox.
While Expend4bles had the most nominations going into this year’s Razzies with seven, it was Blood and Honey – which popularized a hopefully limited trend of public domain horror – that won the most with five.

Paul Dano is sharing his thoughts on the superhero fatigue that’s hitting the film industry, calling it a “welcome moment” he thinks could lead to better movies down the road.
During an interview with The Independent, published online Saturday, the Spaceman actor said he feels “quantity over quality” in recent years played a role in the current state of Hollywood, especially Marvel and DC Studios’ box office flops last year.
“It’s an interesting moment where everybody has to go like, ‘Ok — what now?’ Hopefully from that, somebody either breathes new life into [comic book movies], or something else blossoms which is not superheroes,” he said. “I’m sure there will still be some good ones yet to come, but I think it’s kind of a welcome moment.”

Though we might find ourselves overwhelmed by the sheer amount of streaming services available in the modern age, one platform remains king: Netflix. The streamer that started it all still boasts the most subscribers, which means that when TV shows and movies depart their hallowed servers, it's kind of a big deal.
Netflix is basically the closest thing we have to the monoculture that existed prior to the internet age, when home entertainment choices were limited and we pretty much all watched and discussed the same shows and movies. Now, despite the fact we're currently enduring a real tyranny of choice when it comes to our viewing options, when Netflix does anything you can bet that most people are paying attention — just look at the cultural phenomenon that was "Stranger Things 4" which managed to send Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" back to the top...

Jason Momoa is back making headlines with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The actor has added yet another water-related movie to his filmography. Having kickstarted his career with the portrayal of Jason Ioane in the syndicated series: Baywatch: Hawaii, he has now starred in some great movies and shows like Baywatch and Game of Thrones.
Jason Momoa was rumored to be playing the role of the DC superhero Arthur Curry/Aquaman in June 2014. He did not make his first appearance as the character until 2016 when he made a cameo in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And he might have returned as the character for the last time in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and the movie’s box office collection is not half as bad as some people might have assumed.

Adding to the unexpected turn of events is the revelation that the studio had purportedly been eyeing a franchise with the 34-year-old actress, a plan now seemingly derailed by the underwhelming performance of the superhero movie.

Known for portraying the role of DC superhero Arrow in the CW television series, Stephen Amell does not seem too impressed with James Gunn’s management of the new DC Universe. Gunn helmed of the DC Universe in 2022 and subsequently shared his plans for Chapter 1, Gods & Monsters, which included several projects. This includes multiple animated shows along with films featuring Superman, Batman, Supergirl, Swamp Things, and The Authority.

Sony Pictures needs to head back to the drawing board with its Marvel universe because "Madame Web" crashed and burned in every way imaginable over the weekend. The studio's latest "Spider-Man" franchise spin-off film hit theaters on Valentine's Day against "Bob Marley: One Love." Conventional wisdom would tell you that the superhero movie would easily beat the middle-of-the-road music biopic. That's not what happened and, frankly, it wasn't even close.
"Madame Web" pulled in just $26.2 million across its first six days of release, counting from Wednesday through the Monday President's Day holiday. It made just $15.3 million over the weekend, coming in second to "One Love." The biopic pulled in a surprisingly large $28.6 million over the weekend and $52 million over its first six days, including a record-breaking opening day in Jamaica. Although Sydney Sweeney’s superhero film Madame Web may not have soared at the box office, her 2023 romantic comedy, Anyone But You, has surpassed expectations, outpacing several notable titles from the same year. Starring Sweeney alongside Glen Powell, the film follows Bea and Ben as they navigate a fake relationship at a destination wedding, masking their initial attraction turned sour to maintain appearances, leading to unexpected twists and revelations about love and authenticity.

Despite receiving mixed critical reviews, the romantic comedy has become a sleeper hit, grossing over $180 million worldwide, exceeding major franchise films like Shazam 2 and Blue Beetle, and is also expected to surpass even MCU’s The Marvels soon.

Madame Web was among the most anticipated superhero movies of 2024. Not because the movie seemed interesting but more because of its concept and the live adaptation of one of the most intriguing characters in the Spider-verse. While Dakota Johnson did somewhat of a good job, receiving mixed reactions, the movie has been yet another failed entry into the long list of failed Marvel movies, that has significantly increased since the last year.
Dakota Johnson in and as Madame Web
Yet, fans are not ready to say goodbye to the character. Not wanting Johnson to reprise the role, fans want another DC actress to take over the crown and resemble a more comic-accurate version of the psychic mutant. And that one actress is none other than Helen Mirren.

British actress Helen Mirren is a Hollywood veteran who has been in the industry for over six decades. She has won numerous accolades throughout her career but is the only performer to have achieved both the American and the British Triple Crowns of Acting. Although she is a beloved British actress, she also has the honorary status of America’s Sweetheart.
Primarily known for her excellent work as an actress, Helen Mirren is also adored for her ability to make fun of the regal presence she brings to the screen. The actress had an off-screen role in Greta Gerwig’s box-office mammoth Barbie. She recently revealed that she almost appeared in person in the movie in a hilarious scene with Olivia Colman.

Valentine's Day gave the box office the shot in the arm it sorely needed as both Paramount's "Bob Marley: One Love" and Sony's "Madame Web" opened in theaters. They will both have a nice, long initial stretch as they not only got the mid-week holiday opening, but they will benefit from this Monday's President's Day holiday as well. As far as the head-to-head battle goes? It's not going to be remotely close, as the Bob Marley biopic is crushing Sony's latest Marvel Comics adaptation in the early going.
"One Love" pulled in $14 million on Wednesday, which marks a new record for a mid-week Valentine's Day opening. While that's nowhere near the record "Deadpool" ($42.5 million) set on the holiday back in 2016, which fell on a Sunday that year, it's now a high watermark for a non-weekend V Day debut. The previous record holder was 2012's "The Vow" ($11.6 million). Given...

There is, a critic will argue, a great deal of value in finding and discussing the worst films of the year. All the films released in a given epoch are a reflection of the trends and ideas that produced them, and scoring the bottom of the barrel for the worst filmmaking, the worst ideas, and the most misguided thinking will provide a valuable analysis of where we are as a society. Worst-of lists are important and vital and should be written with enthusiasm. They also let critics blow off steam a little bit; we don't have the luxury to skip bad movies or avoid talking about the ones we hate. It's our job.
The Golden Raspberries, or the Razzies for short, however, lost sight of that value a while back. The annual Razzies announcement is usually a snarky affair that only serves to pick on the year's least popular blockbusters,...

Dakota Johnson lazily leads an incompetent attempt to set up a new character, made almost incoherent by last-minute changes
It was an inevitable collapse after a reign of such unwarranted length and unparalleled indulgence, superhero movies totalling eight a year during the 2010s, a lucrative yet tiresome stronghold. There were brief highlights within the flurry but such lazy overreliance left little room for other blockbuster genres to flourish and led studios to scrape barrels, giving us more and more of something we’d ultimately had enough of. Last year saw an overwhelming rejection and now the fallout, the first of the year doubling up as a Powerpoint presentation on what went wrong and how not to fix it.
Developed back in 2019, given a green light in 2020, filmed during 2022 and then allegedly undergoing reshoots last year, Madame Web was envisioned as a way to extend Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man universe: a business,...

Madame Web was finally revealed to the public Monday night after the Sony/Marvel film held its premiere in Los Angeles, and the first reactions have already hit social media.
The superhero movie stars Dakota Johnson in the title role, a woman who develops psychic abilities. The cast also includes Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web was written by Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker.
Madame Web is hitting theaters at a time when comic book movies are experiencing something of a slump, following poor box office returns and critical scores for Marvel’s The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and DC’s The Flash, Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

The box office is in desperate need of saving right now. January relied almost entirely on holdovers from 2023 like "Wonka" and "Anyone But You" to help get theaters by, with only a few new movies such as "Mean Girls" and "The Beekeeper" to liven up the joint. Unfortunately, films like "I.S.S." failed to connect with the general public. So, can the next Marvel superhero adventure be the hero we need right now? Maybe not. Sony's "Madame Web" is due to hit theaters on Valentine's Day and, while these comic book adaptations were money in the bank for well over a decade in Hollywood, times have changed. This, it appears, is going to play more like "Morbius" and less like "Venom."
Directed by S.J. Clarkson, "Madame Web" stars Dakota Johnson ("Fifty Shades of Grey") in the lead role with a supporting cast that includes Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria"), Isabela Merced ("Sweet Girl...

The DC Extended Universe is dead.
Starting in 2008, several feature films based on Marvel Comics proved to be big hits, and Marvel Studios (in conjunction with Disney) would go on to rewrite the blockbuster landscape. For 15 straight years, Marvel dominated the box office by taking a serialized TV structure and applying it to movies, hence birthing the "Cinematic Universe." Each film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was directly connected to all the others. In the "season finale episodes," characters would team up. The MCU never told very sophisticated stories — they all boiled down to "good guys" and "bad guys" engaging in pugilism — but they captured the public's attention like no film series had before.
Naturally, Warner Bros. tried to imitate the McU's success by launching the Dceu in 2013. After all, Warner Bros. still owned the film rights to an enormous back catalogue of superhero characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman,...

Just like with almost every other 2024 film, I didn’t know much about The Tiger’s Apprentice. In fact, besides the fact that it had a tiger, I really didn’t know anything else about it. Therefore, I was surprised to see a cast boasting the likes of Henry Golding (The Gentlemen), Lucy Liu (Shazam! Fury of the Gods), Sandra Oh (Quiz Lady), and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), as well as talented screenwriters like David Magee (The Little Mermaid) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). Director Raman Hui (Monster Hunt) was the ‘wildcard’ I was unfamiliar with, so overall, I held no expectations whatsoever.
The Tiger’s Apprentice follows the well-covered, formulaic path of a young protagonist discovering a family secret and bearing it against some sort of antagonist. In this particular case, Tom (Brandon Soo Hoo), a Chinese American boy living in San Francisco, is the latest in a...

Worldwide Box Office: MCU vs Dceu (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Two of the biggest superhero universes, MCU and Dceu, have always found themselves in a pool of comparisons, and even fans of these respective universes are often at loggerheads on social media. At present, the situation on both sides isn’t that good as films have failed to match the expectations. So, let’s look at the worldwide box office of the last 5 films from each universe!
MCU’s current status
Talking about the current situation, MCU isn’t enjoying the best of its run as films aren’t living up to their expectations. Apart from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, none of the recent releases has managed to garner positive outcomes. Yes, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever did good business, but it wasn’t up to the mark if compared with the first installment.

The Current Debate is a column that connects the dots between great writing about topics in the wider film conversation.Crossroads.It was early last March when, after twenty-three years and over two thousand reviews, A. O. Scott announced he would resign from his post as film critic at the New York Times, leaving his readers to wrestle with some cataclysmic prophecies. “The current apocalypse,” he wrote on his way out,… is that streaming and Covid anxiety are conspiring to kill off moviegoing as we have known it, leaving a handful of I.P.-driven blockbusters and horror movies to keep theaters in business while we mostly sit at home bingeing docuseries, dystopias and the occasional art-film guilt trip. Am I worried? Of course I’m worried. The cultural space in which the movies I care most about have flourished seems to be shrinking. The audience necessary to sustain original...

The Golden Raspberry Awards recognize the so-called worst movies of the year, and most of this year’s nominees are available to stream now!
Hollywood’s award season is finally back on track after 2023 strikes from its biggest actors’ and writers’ unions threw essentially everything off schedule in Tinseltown. Expend4bles tops the not-so-coveted list of Razzie Award nominations this year, with seven chances to take home a dubious honor.
Tying for a close second were The Exorcist: Believer and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, each receiving five noms.
“After strikes, lingerings of a worldwide plague and a general sense of universal agoraphobia, the decline of the cinematic experience goes without saying,” Razzie organizers said in announcing today’s nominations. “Thankfully, a doll pic and a bomb movie jump-started The Industry, which still left a trail of Pooh behind for the Razzies to pick up!”
This year’s acting contenders feature former Oscar winners Jon Voight, Russell Crowe and Dame Helen Mirren, as well as Razzie Repeat Offenders Sylvester Stallone, Megan Fox and Jennifer Lopez.
Results were determined by the votes of Razzie Members. Five top contenders were chosen in each of nine categories. The 44th annual Razzie “Winners” (for whom there will literally be no red carpet) will be unveiled on the now traditional “Oscar Eve,” Saturday, March 9.

The nominations for the 2024 Razzie Awards are here, and this year, there’s a lot of big names on this list.
The Razzies are given out each year to performers and movies that are deemed the “worst,” so it’s not exactly an honor to be nominated.
This year, the film Expend4bles leads the pack with 7 nominations.
By the way, if you don’t know, the Razzies are always announced one day before the Oscar nominations, which will be unveiled tomorrow (January 23).

Awards season is here, which means it is also time for the annual Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies, which aims to (dis)honor the least successful films of the year, has announced nominations for its 44th edition.
The most-nominated film is “Expend4bles,” the fourth entry in the action-packed, but critically underwhelming, “The Expendables” franchise. It received seven nominations. Tied for second place with five noms are “The Exorcist: Believer,” the revival of the classic horror series, and “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a blood-soaked take on everyone’s favorite honey-loving bear. Two big-budget superhero movies, DC’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” both got four nominations.

The film earned seven nominations for the Razzie Awards, which honor the worst of the year and are announced annually ahead of the Oscars noms announcement, which takes place Tuesday morning.
Expend4bles is one of five movies competing for “worst picture” of the year. The nominees in that category, along with the Razzies’ comments, are:
— The Exorcist: Believer: “a 50-years-later remake/rip-off that was horrifying in unintended ways”
— Expend4bles: “another installment of a franchise that’s fading faster than Razzie ‘winner’ Donald Trump’s mental acuity”
— Meg 2: The Trench: “a fishy tale about a snarky shark that flopped across all seven seas”
— Shazam! Fury of the Gods: “one of 2023’s several comic book movies failing to save the superhero genre”
— Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey: “a...

Oakhurst’s Marina Grasic is producing alongside Matthew G. Zamias (Boxing Day), co-founder of the new financing and production company Astral Future, as well as Wendy Sweetmore of Dreamtime Films. It was a somewhat quiet weekend at the box office as Blumhouse's "Night Swim" had a decent opening while "Wonka" once again won the day. Meanwhile, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is still hanging around and fighting the good fight for DC, with the superhero sequel hanging onto the number three spot in its third weekend with a $10.5 million haul. While it may not be enough to make Warner Bros.'s latest comic book adaptation an actual hit, it was enough to bring the movie's total past "The Flash" to make it the highest-grossing DC movie released in 2023.
Director James Wan's "Aquaman" sequel has now earned $100 million domestically and $234.8 million internationally for a grand total of $334.8 million worldwide, per The Numbers. Meanwhile, "The Flash" topped out at $270 million worldwide last year, which included $108 million domestically. Amazingly, that was the best performance that a DC movie managed to put up,...

Who is up for a massive DC movie binge? If you’re in the United States and have a Netflix subscription, you can do that right now through to at least April next year with the majority of titles from the Dceu and other DC movies dropping between December and January 2024. Here’s your updated guide to watching the movies in order.
We will cover three ways to watch the DC movies that have landed on Netflix.
Firstly, we’ll cover the simple release order. You’d have watched these movies in this order if you went to the theater each time a new DC movie dropped. Following that, we’ll look at the canon order of the Dceu, i.e., if you want to follow the timeline’s events closely. This will exclude any title that exists outside the Dceu. Finally, you’ll get the Kasey list.

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is quickly sinking at the box office.
The comic book adventure, starring Jason Momoa as the King of Atlantis, was positioned on the calendar as the de facto blockbuster of the holiday season. But, so far, the follow-up to 2018’s megahit “Aquaman” has failed to recapture the spark of the original. The $205 million-budgeted tentpole caps off 2023, a terrible year for superhero movies, as the fourth consecutive flop for Warner Bros. and DC Studios following “The Flash,” “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and “Blue Beetle.”
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” swam to second place in its sophomore outing, collecting a soft $19.5 million over the weekend and an estimated $26 million through New Year’s Day on Monday. It has grossed $84 million domestically and $258 million globally after two weeks of release, on par with eventual comic book disappointments like “The Flash,” “The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Comic-book movie culture didn’t just stumble this year. It face-planted, giving us one movie after another that fans didn’t much care about and that the corporations backing these films took a disquieting loss on. And that’s not how it was supposed to go. According to the Gospel of 21st-Century Hollywood, the words “comic-book film” and “box-office disappointment” are not supposed to appear in the same sentence. When they do, not just once but over and over and over again, the tea leaves are telling us something ominous and maybe definitive.
Why, in 2023, did this happen? The analysis that has mostly been offered is simple: The movie companies served up mediocre superhero product. That’s why they — and we — suffered. If it had just been one or two duds, the situation might have been explained away. But when you think back on “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and...

The James Wan-produced horror film Lights Out made almost $150 million on a budget just under $5 million when it was released in 2016, so it was no surprise when New Line Cinema immediately greenlit a sequel. What’s surprising is that, seven years later, Lights Out 2 has still never made it into production. Collider recently hosted a screening of Lights Out with director David F. Sandberg in attendance, and during that event he talked a bit about the unmade sequel.
First, here’s a reminder of what was going on in Lights Out: When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out… and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety.
