As it exists, this Melies-style fantasy of devils, cooks, stop-motion camera tricks and black humor doesn't make much sense, and bears little relation to the elaborate description that appears in the IMDb summary. At least, that's the version i saw, in which the cook appears to place the tiny assistant in the pot.
It's still amusing if you enjoy this sort of ur-grammar cinema, from before the time when the modern editing techniques started to take over the world.
