Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Tomorrow, “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) will make its home-viewing debut at $24.99 for rental, $29.99 for digital download, and will presumably sweep all #1 positions for weeks to come. The extent may depend on the as-yet undated PVOD arrivals of “Oppenheimer,” “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning: Part One,” and “Sound of Freedom.”
For now, our usual chart lineup is down one list: Google Play mysteriously has the same films in the same order for more than a week. In that universe, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is still #1 while “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” has yet to chart.
“Strays” Courtesy Universal Pictures
Other #1 slots reflect the ways iTunes and Vudu calculate their lists. “No Hard Feelings” (Sony), which had an early rental price reduction to $5.99 after success at $19.99, is #1 on iTunes, which calculates by transactions. Just-released R-rated comedy “Strays” (Universal) leads at Vudu, which ranks by revenue.

Sunday Am Writethru: After Saturday Am update As the pandemic eases and the town questions what works on the big screen, the answers are largely family films, even if they are dated three weekends in a row. We’re talking about Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s overperformance of its 69M production The Bad Guys, which is notching a solid debut of 24M and a great A CinemaScore. Per EntTelligence, the Pierre Perifel-directed animated movie drew 2.1M admissions. Paramount’s third weekend of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is even coming up strong in second place with -48 hold, a 15.2M weekend, and tally of 145.8M by Eod Sunday.

Conor McGregor would be Stupid to take a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov because it's a fight he'll never win ... ever ... so says Eddie Alvarez. Of course, Eddie battled Conor back in 2016 at Ufc 205 and lost via Tko in the 2nd round -- so he's well aware of what Conor's capable of doing in the Octagon. “If you don’t learn about your history, you’re doomed to repeat it.” That’s one of the most important takeaways of the Hulu limited series “The Looming Tower,” according to actor Tahar Rahim. He stars as Ali Soufan, a real-life FBI agent who investigated al-Qaeda in the years leading up to the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Watch our exclusive video interview with Rahim above.
Rahim had the opportunity to meet Soufan before portraying him, and he wanted to get to know him “just like two friends, to understand more about who he is in his private life so I could bring this to the character.” He was especially impressed by Soufan’s dedication at such a young age. He was in his 20s when he joined the FBI, while Rahim remembers his own 20s as “hanging out with my friends, having fun, parties, restaurants. I was not even aware...

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ve waited for 54 years for Doctor Who to explain why crows sound like they do, so now that they’ve finally tackled that important issue it’s time for our weekly round-up of callbacks, similarities and generally interesting things taken from this week’s episode. With little over a month to go until the big night, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled the 2017 BAFTA nominations, and it’s Damien Chazelle’s La La Land that leads the charge.
Following its historic turn at last weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony – Chazelle’s old-timey musical walked away with seven wins, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor/Actress gongs for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone – La La Land continues its strong run in this year’s awards season with BAFTA nominations in all of the major categories.
For Best Film, it’ll be competing against Arrival, Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight – three formidable and worthy opponents that have collected scores of nominations between them – along with I, Daniel Blake, Ken Loach’s profound and perceptive portrayal of unemployment and its subsequent stigma in northerly England. By and large, the official BAFTA...

At some point Channing Tatum went from man-candy (what? It's been said) to movie star. His star rose when Step Up stole the hearts of romantic comedy lovers that had waited too long for a new dance film. Seemed like Save The Last Dance had been decades before, despite the fact it actually released only five years prior. But, let's take a look back at Channing's filmography and see exactly where Tatum became something more.

Kevin Macdonald To Direct Whitney Houston Documentary, And Amazon Sci-Fi Series 'Strange New Things'
Try as you might, you can't pin down director Kevin Macdonald. As a documentary filmmaker, he won an Oscar for "One Day In September," and has also helmed "Life In A Day" and "Marley" among others. And in features, he's bounced between true life tales ("The Last King Of Scotland"), swords and sandals epics ("The Eagle"), submarine thrillers ("Black Sea"), and political potboilers ("State Of Play"). And once again, he's got his hands in a few different pots. First up, Macdonald will be helming an officially authorized documentary about Whitney Houston. Folks who were involved with "Searching For Sugar Man" and "Amy" will be backing the project, which promises not to sugercoat the legendary singer's life, which had more than it's fair share of controversy and tabloid worthy headlines. And crucially, Clive Davis, who discovered Houston and propelled her to fame, will be part of those...

The Charming Potato is joining the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle! I remember the moment Channing Tatum clicked for me. It certainly wasn’t on first exposure. Sometimes I see an actor and immediately like what they’re doing, and when I saw A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, it was with some early hype about both the director, Dito Montiel, and this amazing new young star, Channing Tatum. Didn’t work for me at all. He was fine in the Step Up films, but that’s because the dancing was front and center. Films like Dear John or Stop-Loss did nothing to change my opinion of Tatum, and in a few cases, like G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra or The Eagle, I thought his presence actually damaged the overall movie. For me, the first sign that he might actually be worth paying attention to was The Dilemma,...

How the Love Actually producer guided the gay-footballers chamber piece from Royal Court sell-out to BFI Flare opening-night film.
Last night (Mar 16), The Pass opened the 30th edition of the BFI’s long-running Lgbt film festival - now called Flare - at the Odeon Leicester Square.
As well as being the first Flare opener to premiere at Odeon’s flagship cinema in 10 years, it also marked a return for Duncan Kenworthy, producer of Four Weddings And A Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually and The Eagle among others, who has premiered four films at the venue.
For Kenworthy, opening BFI Flare with The Pass was an optimal result for a film he self-funded and produced entirely under the radar, with the understanding that if it wasn’t a creative success, he could decide not to unveil it to the wider world. Fortunately, reviews for the Ben A. Williams-directed adaptation of John Donnelly’s play about gay footballers...

Icelandic cinema scored one more victory at the 2016 Harpa Awards, which took place at the Nordic Embassies during Berlinale on February 15, 2016. Composer Atli Örvarsson won the award for Best Film Score for the Icelandic film "Rams," while Johann Johannson took home the Honorary Award.
“The award for Best Film Score goes to a man with a unique sound,” said the jury who consisted of Thomas Robsahm, Konrad Sommermeyer and Christineauf der Haar. “The accordion perfectly matches the loneliness, the nature and the sound of the sheep calling out for each other - the bleating. The music, the atmosphere and the pictures fit perfectly together. It feels as if the director and the composer really are in close contact – and telling their story together.”
Grímur Hákonarson's "Rams" took home the Un Certain Regard Award at last year's Cannes Film Festival and has since screened at numerous festivals around the world charming critics and audiences alike. Cohen Media Group released the film stateside earlier this month.

Atli has worked with Hans Zimmer in Los Angeles for a number of years. Since moving back to his original hometown Akureyri in northern Iceland, he has scored a number of Hollywood films and TV series as well as Icelandic films. The film "Rams" was coincidentally shot in the remote countryside village where his mother grew up and is based on a true story about two elderly brothers living on the same farm and leading a very rural countryside life - but have not spoken to each other for many decades. Atli is the son of Iceland´s most distinguished accordionist Örvar Kristánsson who passed away last year. Atli created the score to a large degree using his father’s old accordion which is heavily featured in the score.
Atli’s credits include orchestrating and writing music for some of Hollywood’s biggest projects, including the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. He has contributed music to films from "Angels and Demons" to "The Holiday. As a composer, Atli Örvarsson displays musical diversity throughout his action-film scores in "The Eagle," "Vantage Point," "Babylon A.D.," the Morgan Freeman caper "Thick as Thieves," "The Fourth Kind," and the Nicolas Cage medieval fantasy "Season of the Witch." Atli’s most recent credits include "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," the dark and edgy film "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," the drama/thriller "A Single Shot" starring Sam Rockwell, the hit NBC series "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Pd," and working with Hans Zimmer to contribute music to the Zack Snyder's Superman reinstallment "Man of Steel."
The Harpa Awards were invented in 2009. The aim was to put a spotlight on Nordic talent, skills and know-how and to promote the great Nordic film talents in music and acting for the international film industry and thereby strengthening the opportunities for cooperation between the Nordic countries and the international film market. Sundance 2016 is fast approaching. Last week we posted the movie lineup of Midnight and Competition film selections. We now have the complete lineup for the premieres in both the feature film and documentary categories. We also have their selections for the Spotlight and Kid films. I've also included a list of special events.
There are a lot of great films on this list that I'm excited about seeing because of the incredible talent involved. One of the smartest and most enthralling Sf film series ever breaks more new ground as it ends on notes as emotional and provocative as they are explosive. I’m “biast” (pro): big Sf geek; love the book series; love Jennifer Lawrence (and much of the rest of the cast); crave female-centered stories
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (and I love it)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There are many ways in which the Hunger Games series of movies has been groundbreaking. It has given us a female world-changing heroine in the mold of the countless boys and men Hollywood has cast in such a role, and showed the caricature up by depicting her as more human than most of them: more conflicted, more unsure, more afraid yet also more brave for overcoming all that… and also simultaneously more principled and more selfish.

As a straight male, I.m probably not supposed to like Magic Mike Xxl as much as I did. Or maybe it.s just uncouth for me to talk about it aloud. to everyone I bump in to. When friends ask me which movie they are supposed to see this holiday weekend, the testosterone in me is supposed to point them toward Terminator: Genisys. But my heart remembers the hilarious scene of Joe Manganiello strip-teasing a Pepsi machine to try and make a convenience store clerk smile, and I know that Magic Mike Xxl is the right recommendation. I liked Steven Soderbergh.s surprise 2012 hit Magic Mike. Yes, it played to its obvious female audience with its titillating male-dance sequences. But in the process, Mike changed the way audiences (and critics) viewed Channing Tatum, who toiled in generic genre fare like The Eagle, Dear John and the underrated The Vow...

Channing Tatum Had a ''Shriveled Burnt Penis'' After Crotch and Balls Injury—''I Didn't Have Skin''!
Channing Tatum is lucky he still has his manhood! During an interview with Howard Stern this week, the 35-year-old hunky actor recalled an on-set accident that happened to his "penis" and "balls" years ago when he was filming the period flick The Eagle in the freezing hills of Scotland. The injury happened when a crewmember handed him a boiling bottle of water to poor down his pants. "I started hyperventilating and screaming and jumping back into the river, because it was a hypothermic river and we had wet suits on, which was the worst part about it," the Magic Mike Xxl star explained. "So this poor guy, I gotta be honest...He had been, for 13 hours, running up a hill to boil to huge...

Director Kevin Macdonald’s Black Sea an is a sturdy old-fashioned thriller, an adventure and treasure hunt set within the confines of a submarine. its captain is played by a burly Jude Law, who leads a group of ruffians down to the bottom of the Black Sea to find a sunken Nazi sub that is rumored to have tons and tons of gold on board. With the drama of the film ratcheted up with crew tension and water conditions, Macdonald’s film is a tense throwback, albeit a parable about the 99% helping each other since they’re on the same boat.
Macdonald previously directed films like How I Live Now, The Last King of Scotland, The Eagle, and Touching the Void. He was also the filmmaker chosen to compile a worldwide stack of footage for the documentary endeavor Life in a Day.

Chicago – The old fashioned paranoid thriller lives, with the release of ‘Black Sea,’ a submarine movie that combines elements of the silent running of those underwater tin cans with the motivation of finding treasure – in this case Nazi gold – that has been buried where it sunk 70 years ago. The director of this film, Kevin Macdonald, creates a nail biting tension in the will-they-or-won’t-they survival mode of the British and Russian members of the submarine’s crew, led by Captain Robinson (Jude Law).
The Scotland-born Macdonald began his career as a notable documentary maker, winning an Oscar for his documentary “One Day in September” (1999), about the raid by Palestinian terrorists of the 1972 Munich Olympics. But he has also spun some Oscar gold in the narrative category, as Forest Whitaker won Best Actor for the Macdonald directed “The Last King of Scotland.” He continued to produce both features (“State of Play,...

Scottish director Kevin Macdonald found some early success and notoriety with his first narrative feature The Last King of Scotland, which ended up earning Forest Whittaker an Oscar. Since then films such as State of Play and The Eagle haven't played so well, though his 2013 feature, How I Live Now, managed to turn some heads, even if it wasn't released on a very wide basis. Known at the beginning of his career as a documentary filmmaker, he's continued on that track here and there, most recently with Marley, but now he comes to the table with his latest fictional feature, a submarine thriller titled Black Sea starring Jude Law as a submarine captain in search of lost Nazi gold. While Black Sea has something of an Indiana Jones-sounding plotline, it's far more serious than that. To go along with the search for sunken gold off the coast of Georgia, there's...

Take a bunch of grizzled character actors and stick them in a metal tube under the ocean, add some depth charges and torpedoes and the like, and drama is bound to result. From "The Enemy Below" and "Run Silent, Run Deep" to "The Hunt For Red October" and "Crimson Tide" by way of "Das Boot," the submarine thriller sub-genre has been a popular one for decades. But in recent years, it has run aground, without a major new film in the genre since Kathryn Bigelow's misfire "K-19: The Widowmaker" over a decade ago. Kevin Macdonald is hoping to change that. The Oscar-winning documentarian-turned-features-director is coming off a few disappointments ("State Of Play," "The Eagle," "Marley"), plus his last film "How I Live Now," which was pretty good, but which literally no one saw. Now he's heading under the waves for "Black Sea," a below-the-water thriller that hopes to reinvigorate.
